2020 Season (Biz)

First time checking cams in 2020. Later than normal for me, but baby was born a few weeks ago. Lots of does/fawns and some survivor small bucks. A few fox and yotes as well. Been a very mild winter, so 2020 deer season should be great!

Date and time is wrong on 1 cam- the blondish yote

Random. I usually catch them on cam 2 or 3 times per year. It’s a long rough ride from their normal trails, so not really an issue

3/22: checked cams. Tons of deer, didn’t see any holding racks still. 1 bobcat. And 7 deer ticks pulled off me. Covered 2 miles today and 42 flights of stairs according to the app.

5/2/20: tried turkey hunting for 2nd time JBJ career. Started hearing gobbles at 528am. Realized it was 2 Tom’s. Same
General direction but different angles. I tried calling a few times and we back and forth till 6am. Or they were just talking to each other? Nothing after 6am. At 730am I took a slow walk in that direction, where is where I deer hunt a lot and killed my 2019 buck on acorn flat near Stateland border. Just as I got there and checked cam (bobcat, yote, deer), I heard gobbles much closer. As I started to look for a spot to sit quick, I saw a turkey fly away. Then I saw 3 deer right after that. One had nubs so definite buck. The other two were too hard to see if they had nubs or not. I then crossed onto Stateland and was about to sit when I kicked up a different turkey which flew away. Those had to be the two i heard. I then saw 2 hunters on Stateland, so they had to be even closer than me. I was calling from 300yds away at initial spot and they were only like 175yds away. Maybe the toms Were confused? If I try again this year I’ll sit in my deer spot and maybe they’ll be right in my lap

Try not to call too much on the roost. Only a few notes for them to know you're there. They tend not to fly down as early or come in as they get frustrated the hen isnt coming to them. I find they tend to roost in the same area most of the season (unless bumped) so id say go there sit where you deer hunt. If you want to get in close, Id go in much earlier. Theres a better chance they'll stay sleeping and not bust you the earlier you go

Thanks. Yea I have no idea If they were gobbling at 530am from a tree or ground? How you can tell the difference?

5:30 its from the roost. I have a hard time telling if its from the ground or roost. Ive always found that they get down around 5:50 or so where I hunt. I think Tacks and someone like TF would be able to tell you more than me tbh

5/13:

I sat on ground against a rock right near where I shot my buck and saw turkeys last time. At 518am i saw big bird fly from tree about 75yds from me head down hill. Turkey or vulture? I bet it was a turkey.

A few minutes later at 522am I heard gobbles far away downhill. So I assume it was the same bird.

Between then and 545am I heard a few faint gobbles but way down the hill.

I blind called every 20min.

At 550am I heard a gobble from my level but behind me. Sounded like near the spot I sat last time, so 250-300 yards away. I called and it came closer. I turned around to get ready. By 6am the gobbles sounded very close. He must have come to the powerlines or the main trail where I turn off. I never saw him But he got close. I never heard anything after 605am. I’m guessing he got within 60-75yds but I never saw him. Left at 730am to work. Forgot SD card reader so couldn’t check cams

Those Turkeys seem to like your Downhill area in the morning. Maybe set up Down there next time.

It borders stateland and usually there are hunters there. Not sure I'll try again this year, but thanks!

Dear WNY Hunters...the opinions stated above are that of the statee only and do not reflect the entirety of the SE region when it comes to hunting.
