What type of bait/lures do you use at this time of the year? i'm heading up for a week and have two days dedicated  to fishing.

Most of the guys out there are using fathead minnows.  Some use jiggin raps too.  I like a sinker with about 18" leader, floating jighead and half a worm.

We were vertical jigging small blade baits mostly. Minnows though are by far the most productive bait right now. I tied up a few 1/16 oz perch colored jigs and tipping with a worm and those were getting inhaled also. Go shallow, 12-14' in the weeds on the western end of the lake and you should be able to find some perch.

Fished for a couple hours.  No action at all on my go-to bait of 1/8 oz bucktail jigs.  Maybe they are getting wise to them after 8 years of seeing them.

A buddy gave me some old lures that were his grandfathers.  The little Johnson idled down good and purred like a kitten trolling.  I caught 2 smallies that were going on 22 inches (they had about 6 inches to go) before I snagged bottom and lost this crainckbait.

I will have to see if I can find any more like that and try again for a 22 incher at midday tomorrow, and every day this week.  Time now to head back into the woods for the afternoon hunt.

I stumbled upon this pattern today, by accident, and I think it has very good potential of producing a smallmouth bass longer than 22 inches.  I found a few more deep running crankbaits, and i I have plenty of ethanol-free gas.

All I am lacking is a couple quarts of 2-stroke oil.  My mother in law said she can grab that for me on her trip to town tomorrow.  The little Johnson 5.5 uses a 16:1 mix, so I will need a considerable amount of oil for trolling all week.

After 4 consecutive "big woods" afternoon sits with zero deer sightings, I decided to stay on the water and concentrate on the smallmouth bass  this afternoon.

I didn't find the 22 incher I was after.  The 1/8 oz bucktail jig came out on top today, landing (11) 12-16 inch bass. Trolling between drifts with the little shad rap yielded (3) more.

On Tacs recommendation, I finished up with the ned rig.  Ned came back to life a little today and two 13 inch smallies hooked themselves on it.  Only one was hooked good enough to land however and the other flopped off before I could lip it.

Final tally of (15 ) "keeper" sized smallies (all  released) in three hours was not too bad.  I will probably only try for a 22 incher for an hour or so at midday, over the next (4) days, because I need to concentrate on filling a deer tag.

After first watch took out the bass boat. Prob shoulda hit the river for smallies but went to see if we could stir up some larges on the lake. We tried a bunch of stuff but it was tough. Water was 55 degrees and bass pretty sluggish. I caught one nice 17” on a crank bait and the boy got one just under legal and that ended the boat season for us. Came home and got the boat put up for winter. It was freakin 80 out!

At least you did not get skunked on your last day out with that boat.  That happened to me in WNY with my 17 footer, trolling for salmon out of Olcott a few weeks ago, giving me more incentive to winterize it.

I probably should have spent more time on the water and less in the big woods up north on Friday.  The smallmouth were still biting ok and the weather was great.  I picked up a 14 and a 16 incher, trolling once around the lake, dragging a shad rap.  Then I hauled my father in law's wide comfortable 14 footer up to its winter storage area.

Then, I launched my tippy little 12 footer, to check its seaworthiness, for our annual Thanksgiving weekend trip up here.  On four of the last 8 years the lake froze over that weekend.  I also wanted to see if my antique mercury KF-5 would run ok, and it did.  I tried a troll around the lake with that coming up empty but one last 16 inch smally hooked itself on a ned rig, on a short drift.  Depending on when the lake freezes over, they might be my last open water fish of the year.

Got a few tonight, dropped a slob on the first cast due to a crappy netjob, few shorts, my 2 buddies limited. It was a slow night, my buddy has been averaging 20-30 minute limits all week, took us an hour to boat 8 keepers. IMG_20201105_194653843.jpg

Took my son on a mission to get him his first steelhead on the fly. We succeeded. He brought both of these fish to the bank. Awesome afternoon and the kid walked a couple miles and never complained. 938b39ccd7ca414bfd83d3ee793a22b1.jpg&key=7045442bbe64b7a0bceb37477399a6e4646bb67437ebc0f55705bb7114cc4cddc80005eb4dbf9a21c85f1c2c13f84597.jpg&key=0ac96c4e26302e340f731f237689c50dfcb1081b95b9e60081aa29b306a0d86b
