Live from the Water 2020

Well got out and did a little fly fishing  friday . Arrived on the river and found a small army where I intended to fish . Sat and watched the water . No bugs hatching yet. Looked up stream nobody fishing .  But I did see a splashy rise . Hopped out and walked up to investigate . A pod of 9 inch stockers cruising  the bank .  About gave up when I glimpsed  a larger trout rise up  off the bottom and sink back down . I had to give him a go . Went back to the truck put on waders  grabbed the rod .  Hit the bank and watched for my target. Nothing but the little guys.   No bugs hatching so I opted for a black nosed dace.  Two casts in and phone rings.  It's the one and only Pygmy... he is fishing a mile down stream from me . He graciously invites me to join him . I agree to meet up in a bit .  But first I have  to try  this trout again.

Casting acrossed and swinging down through the hole   I get a solid hit  on a decent trout . Little tussle  on the 3 wt  and I get him to shore 20200424_135927.thumb.jpg.5dd5bae7cc7745570bca6e643e3be12d.jpg

I pack it in  and head down  stream to meet up with Pygmy.

Arriving at the location I find Pygmy   has all the fish in the stream corralled  up in front of him on the far bank . I drop in above him and proceed   to cast repeatedly  into the barren waters  whipping in to a froth  to no avail.

I waded  to shore and watched  pygmy  tease and torture  the poor trout  by repeatedly casting to them and denying them the opportunity  to strike .

By this time the hendrickson  hatch is in full swing.  Pygmy  decides to take a break and allows  me a shot . I step in and make pass after pass but no takers . Light hendrickson  ... dark hendrickson... pale evening dun.. even a nymph . Nothing.  Finally I see a smaller mayfly on the water.... it's a masking hatch .... overcast day ... must be bwo.. I put on an snow shoe  emerger bwo. 3 cast I managed a hit

Pygmy was very upset that I would injure  that poor fish by actually hooking it when I could have missed the hook set or at the very least  pulled it away at the last second .... I promise I will try harder  sir ...

Had a good time Pygmy ... we need to do it again soon.

Ah the upper west branch....the air fryer within the gourmet kitchen of the Roscoe area...I jest of course - after hearing AThunter praise the hell out of that place I’d be honored to have you me around! With sports seemingly shut down through June for my kids I should have no excuses!

Who's going out for some erie perch tomorrow? Anyone? Lake should be flat early

I stand corrected. The lake was not flat on the ride back from sturgeon to buffalo. The bite was not hot but picked away.

26 fly fisherman in a 1 mile stretch so I turned around and tried the spot alone where I got the other day. Lost my rainbow trout lure on a snag, switched to this old phoebe and got an 11” brown.

I missed a solid strike on a pheasant tail nymph after he jumped and spit the hook. Lost a ton of flies today-AND missed an encounter with Biz...I was not one of the 20+ he counted as I had to leave before he arrived. Beautiful day

NYTracker helped me retrieve my fly from a tree the last time we fished together...He's a lot taller than I am..

Then again....So is everyone else...

I hear the Pygmy is short but also hangs lower than the average man

Awesome! I caught a 4-5lb years ago in canals near Miami airport. Should have mounted it. I regret it. They fight like smallmouth on steroids!

Sweet.  This was a dink.  Still fun being it was my first. Canal fishing as well.
