I know some on this site hunt for wild fungi, but has anyone delved into growing their own?

I have a large Aspen patch that is full of oyster mushrooms, but have decided to try some blue oysters, there as well.  lionsmane, and shiitake will be going in a large pole sugar maple stand, going to try log method.. any one have any success, tips tricks.. once they are established can you inoculate new logs using old established ones?? I dont want to have to buy spoor every few years ..

I just tried planting logs a few weeks ago - shitakes in hornbeam, oyster in poplar. A friend who has done this a handful of times came over and helped. She has had regular success. I'm hopeful. Of 3 friends who tried it on their own (no expert help) only 1 got mushrooms.

She lent me the tool for injection sawdust spawn. I bought a drill and adapter for the angle grinder. Three of us did about 40 logs in 4 hours. Now I patiently wait.

I remember an old mushroom farm on Rt, 5 towards Batavia back in the early 70's. They were growing them inside an old barn on tables. We would stop and watch them cut them off to fill our order.   Is this how your growing them?

Using a log method, spore is mixed in sawdust and formed into dowels, drill holes and pound dowels into the ,seal with wax and keep in most shady area watering logs if necessary, and wait...... 6 months to a year depending on variety.. then harvest your mushrooms

Thank you for the response. Shady,  If I remember correctly, it was quite dark where they were growing.  Thus the barn usage.  The whole subject is near blank to me, but draws my intrest. Would be great to harvest my own mushrooms. Can you lead me into a correct informational Youtube video?

I think you should not inoculate until after the danger of frost is past. Also, after you cut the tree, preferably after it leaves out so there is moisture in the log,you should wait a few weeks. The tree has anti fungal things in it that will break down in a few weeks.

The people I spoke to said to inoculate when temps are reaching 40F regularly. I have no prior experience so followed their instructions. Everyone seems to agree the logs should be cut when dormant and stored in the shade for a couple of weeks.

Well inoculated my 1st logs today..  this was shiitake mushroom spore so a sugar maple was sacrificed.. about 7 in in diameter and 4 to 5 ft long.

1st drill 3/8 hole as long as dowel provided, about 1 in deep, spacer.pngspacer.pngabout  4 to 5 inches apart in a diamond pattern ( about 50 holes a log it worked out to.)spacer.pngScreenshot_20200420-131705_Gallery.thumb.jpg.7716b0190544347d9f7478013df0e31c.jpg

2nd fill hole with spore inoculated dowels. Pounded them in flush with hammerspacer.png.spacer.pngspacer.pngScreenshot_20200420-142705_Gallery.thumb.jpg.0aa006ddf03e511fb551726116825eb2.jpg

3rd sealed dowels in with parifin/ bees wax  and sealed end of logs as well. Screenshot_20200420-131734_Gallery.thumb.jpg.b1b73563c570f405c638b9f4443b4bf9.jpg

4th  Took to a shady humid spot in woods and layed on some 2 in thick limbwood to keep off forest floor.

Now the wait ... well really waiting for more spore to arrive , decided on shiitake,  lionsmane,  and blue oysters.

Will be same exact procedure for lionsmane, and same for oysters with just a change of log species to Aspen.
