Well woke up in the middle of the night and big toe was swollen and throbbing in pain !  Had no clue what it was , took two Advil's and put on some sports cream .... didn't touch and didn't sleep most of the night !  Went to the Emergcare place a couple hours ago and sure enough its the Gout !  I'm over 60 and never had it before , my Dad did and I remember him in lots of pain ! The Doctor prescribed some meds and stated that he takes the same thing and after a couple days it will be gone ! He stated that once I begin feeling it  again take one of the pills and it will be gone . Forgive my French .... GOUT SUCKS !

I've never had gout but i can relate. I broke my foot in half in 07  , just above the big toe is basically in pain everyday with every step.  Somedays it's so bad I'll be limping on it.
I broke my big toe courtesy of a freaking pint of talenti gelato falling from the stupid freezer and Landing from about 5.5+ feet up right in the joint with the sharp end into it. Been 3 years since and still have pain. Can't wait to change medical plans then I'm going to an orthopedist to get it cleaned out so I can go back to relative normal. But as far as gout goes I hear it's brutal. Too much citrus

I suffered with it for years, and had it mis-diagnosed  by several Docs because   I never had attacks in the classic area..the big toe...Finally went to a rheumatoligist  who knew what he was doing and got on allopurinol, which solved the problem..

Over a period I had attacks in both knees, both ankles, and other places..Gout CAN occur in any joint..

Painful is a mild term for it...There were several times when I was in intense pain  24 hours a day for a week or two at a time...

Allopurinol is a preventative, not a remedy...The last couple of times I had an attack, prednisone knocked it out very quickly...

I have not had an attack for years, and I hope I never get another one..

I dealt with sever gout for yrs.  Toe, ankle, knees, elbows and wrist. It's debilitating.  The weight of a bed sheet on your toe feels like someone is twisting it with pliers.  Any movement of infected joint is painful.

Alcohol, beer mainly, shell fish, and organ foods are to be avoided.  I take allopurinol as a preventative, and coltracein if I get a attack.  Like pygmy, several times over the yrs, I've had to take Prednisone as the attack was brutal.

Good luck with getting it under control.  Ask the doc for allopurinol as a daily pill to rid the body of excess uaric acid.

Colchesine  never seemed to help me...For a number of years I used heavy doses of nsaids such as indocin and  ibuprofen, and they helped, but very slowly....The last couple of attacks I did the prednisone ( 5 day dose) and it had an immediate positive effect..Felt better within hours...

If you get an attack, go to a specialist..I went to several  internalists and they would draw blood and tell me my uric acid level was normal or below..Finally went to a rheumatolgist and he told me that was typical, because during a gout attack all the uric acid is concentrated at the site of the attack...The only way to really diagnose it is to draw fluid from the inflamed joint and examine it under a microscope for uric acid crystals, which are actually little needles that prick into the surrounding tissue and cause the inflammation...Let me tell you.....Having  a big needle inserted into a painful, swollen knee joint to draw off liquid is quite an experience..

Since I have been of the allopurinol ( about ten years)  I have had no problems...Hope it stays that way...

Gout is caused by the build up of Uric Acid . I have gout in the toe next to my big toe on my left foot . Untreated , it is extremely painful . I take two 2400 mg Tart Cherry Extract when I get up in the am . That pretty much gets me through the day . Sometimes I will take 1 pill in the pm if the toe acts up . You can find the 2400 mg Tart Cherry Extract on Amazon .

My grandfather had four (Rich man’s disease!). I remember being at his place when he came home from the doctor with the diagnosis - he walked in like he just fathered the next president of the USA! So proud that he was able to get the rich mans disease!

I also had a one time flare up after a 4 day long party when my best friend got engaged. The pain is brutal! Who knew a big toe could hurt that much!

Nothing worse. I had hip replacement and developed gout two days later. The pain from the surgery was mild in comparison to the gout pain. Colchicine worked well for me. A key thing is to stay hydrated. I’ve had a few mild relapses but nothing close to that first bout.

Well the Doctor prescribed Indomethacin 50 mg ... one capsule 3 times per day ... took one last evening and another just now (5am) and hope like hell it stops the pain ! Believe it or not I spoke to Social Security on the phone yesterday morning for a pre- planned appointment to get setup for my retirement this fall , hopefully this Gout isn't a harbinger of things to come . I'll be retiring just before Hunting Season kicks in and will definitely need to walk the woods  ! Thanks for all the responses , gives me a few good hints to try and control this BS !

Wow I thought Indomethacin was no longer available. I used to take the generic indicin. Worked ok, but the colchicine works great for me.  One side effect of colchicine.  If you take too much, you WILL have the runs.  My doc tells me to take 2 pills then 1 every other hr.  When the gurgling starts, stop, lol.  A bout of the runs is heavenly compared to the pain from gout..

I can empathize with you GreeneHunter. The first time I got gout was also in my big toe . The pain was excruciating. I remember trying to sleep with my foot dangling off the bed because like mowin said the weight of the bedsheet was too painful. My doctor prescribed Allopurinol 300mg once a day which is a godsend. When I do get a gout attack , which is rare , I take a couple of Indomethacin 25mg that I have. They say that if you eat cherry's and drink cherry juice , it helps avoid getting the gout.

You can purchase Tart Cherry Extract to alleviate the pain .

Thought I had gout in the big toe joint. Doctor said that maybe it was false gout and she had to take a fluid sample. You gout guys ... imagine someone sticking in a large needle in and moving it around a little to get enough fluid.

Is she wasn't insanely cute, I would have passed out.

It's not fluid ,I think it's more like crystals, like fine sand formation.

Correct, the crystals have a barb, like a fish hook.  However when swollen, they can draw fluid.

Jeremy K - you are so right

Gout is a kind of arthritis that causes painful and stiff joints. Gout is caused by the buildup of crystals made of a substance called uric acid in your joints. It often starts in the big toe and can also cause lumps under the skin and kidney stones.

My toe was so painful at one time I thought it would feel better if it was removed .

I asked if it is a buildup of fluid , could they draw it out with a needle and was told no . I don't see why not .

Go for it. Get back to me on that.

I contracted dengue fever in Malaysia. I was in so much pain the night it hit that I would have agreed to remove my head. Like someone took a sledgehammer to every joint in my body.

How often have you started a conversation at a cocktail party with. “ when I contracted dengue fever in Malaysia...”
I would go to that line once a week!!!!

I had to help remove gout from the back of the neck of a 12 foot gharial once.  It was at the top of it's neck at the base of it's skull.  When they cut it open, it was like feta cheese.  The vet scoop it out with a spoon.

Haha, or was that a goiter?
