License Sales Soar

Sales for hunting and trapping licenses through the New York State DEC are at record-breaking levels, according to DEC officials.

Nearly three times as many licenses and deer permits were sold on the first day they were made available than the last couple of years. High numbers of sales continued over the next couple of weeks.

There was more than $6.2 million in license sales in the first two weeks they were available, compared to $3.5 million for the same period in 2019.

I just finished posting my property tighter than a drum.  I don't object to new hunters going out with experienced ones to show them how it's done.  I encourage that and have mentored a few myself.    I do object to those that just bought a gun that they have never shot and going into the woods to get them some deer.  I fear part of the increased sales is the price of meat and shortages that have happened.

My Amish neighbors have always been respectful of my property but every year I get one or two "English" that come onto my property.  (English is Amish code for outsider)  To access my property you need to cross a least one other posted and private property.

One year a guy walks in right under me in my tree stand obvious.  When I asked him what he was doing there he informed me he knew the owner real well.  I told him I didn't think he did but it's always a very polite conversation with everyone holding a gun.

My guess is that there won't be too many more hunters in the field than before.  Not like people all of a sudden have become hard core hunters that will stick with it for the long haul.  People are just as lazy as last year so I can't see them getting their butts up very early in the morning to freeze on a stand for hours on end.  Most of the increased license sales were probably due to the online hunting courses where people are getting licenses for family members just to get the extra doe tags.  Most of these people may never step into the woods.
