Maybe you are right in some instances.  Grouse said that he saw the same product marked up $12 from one store to the other. I’m sure both stores are buying from the same wholesaler. So that’s where my comment about price gouging came from.  As far as why cant these stores make more of a profit?   yeah that’s all on them. I just choose not to go back to any store that will double and triple their prices to the community.   It’s their right to as business owners, but Im not supporting a local business that would do that.  I guess if people see this as ok then thats your choice.  If a community is keeping these places in business for years and then they want to double and triple their prices when the time comes.  Well thats on them.  I just dont like that.

I dont think my sentiment is overly harsh.  I love supporting local businesses and as I’ve gotten older I have come to realize the importance of them.  Id rather spend a couple dollars more at the local gun shop, restaurant, deli, etc than get a better price at a box store.  with that being said I draw the line at doubling your prices for a short term gain.

Like I said I understand your frustration. I thought I was top 10 on the list of a couple places I buy from but that's just not the case nowadays. Times change unfortunately.

I don't know the profit margins on guns and ammo. I agree with you in the sense that if a shop doubles or triples their typical margin on a product in scarce times I'd consider it gouging. But they also do that with the risk that people like yourself then tell them to GTH and never return.

Go down to the local shop and ask them WTH is going on? If they can look you in the face and want to continue doing business with you and in the town they should be able to give you a credible answer. Just realize you're the 29th person today walking in to give them sh!t.

I too patronize as many local places as I can. Good times and bad. Maybe at some point they'll patronize my biz. Come's around goes around.

We need to have an ammo sticky which just posts locations and availability :)

WMart Victor had shelves full of 12 & 20 Remi sluggers

Facebook. Sportsman warehouse Rochester, posts when ammo comes  in and what caliber. Generally they post early in the morning that it hits the shelves this was posted today around 8- 8:30 .

For those looking for primers, they seem to come in fairly regularly, but not in this last shipment .

Ammo is two box limit or one bulk pack, prices are just a bit more then pre shortage , 9mm ball looks to be around $16-$20 for 50, hard to make out tags .

You need to go when they post the shipment on FB ,which is generally at the stores opening although due to requests by working folks, they do stagger it to later in the day sometimes . Depending on the amount received some calibers can last a bit . Personally I’d rather pay a much higher price for a case online , then run out there for two boxes at normal prices .

Also which I take as a good sign ,Buds Guns ,online has some ammo in stock that has always sold out PDQ , including 9mm, .22 LR, and 20 Ga slugs ( I got 5 boxes of Brenneke for $10 per ) , yes the price on 9mm and .22 is really high , but not as high as it was before and it all sold then .

These shops are buying from wherever they can source the item. Certainly not from the same wholesaler. It is what is creating the variance. The whole chain is messed up as noted. The larger stores are not changing prices because they are usually locked in on buy/sell contracts to ensure they are able to get supplied first.

Smaller dealers are buying one, two, three, or four times removed from the manufacturer and not consistently from the same wholesaler. That I know with confidence.

I know a guy who sold .223 ammo to a gun shop from his private stash ,which is substantial, and he made a nice profit.

March 22nd, 2021 Winchester ammunition announced an increase in all ammunition prices effective May 1st. The letter from Winchester is below but amounts to a fairly large increase in the cost of ammunition.

March 22, 2021

To All Winchester Ammunition Customers:

Thank you for your commitment to Winchester and Browning Ammunition in support of our legendary products.

Due to the increased cost inputs for manufacturing ammunition, it is necessary to increase ammunition prices for all shipments, including backorders, beginning May 1, 2021.

Ammunition will be subject to the following price increases.

  • Shotshells + 5%-12%
  • 22 Magnum Rimfire ammunition + 5%-15%
  • Hunting Rifle ammunition + 5%-15%
  • All Centerfire Pistol ammunition +8%
  • Components +10%
  • Primers +25% (Due to our current backorder situation, until further notice, Winchester is not accepting new orders on primers)

These May 1, 2021 increases will affect all pack sizes, sub-brands, and special make-ups.

All existing orders and future orders shipped on or after May 1, 2021, will be shipped at the new prices unless you notify us requesting cancellation. Procedures for repricing back and future orders will be issued with new pricelists and programs in the coming weeks.

Sincerely,

Matt Campbell

Went to 3 stores near me over the past few days and saw the following. It's not much, but it's more than I've seen in a long time. I'm sure it's long gone by now, but seeing anything is encouraging.

Dick's Greece = 20ga 2 3/4 slugs

Walmart, 104 in Greece - .300 Win Mag; 45-70

Walmart, Dewey in Greece - .30-06; 100 packs of 7 1/2 and 8 shot.

The Walmart in Dewey has had about 8 boxes of .350 Legend for months now. I don't own one, so always passed on it. I just recently decided that I'd like to build an AR for that round as something to take on a hog hunt. So I finally go back to get what I can, and wouldn't you know it that after months of sitting there, suddenly they're gone. Oh well, the search continues.

Went to a local sporting good auction this past Saturday.   Everything went for stupid money.

Just a couple examples..  Two mugs of Remington 22LR, 300 rds each, so 600 total went for $175.

A ruger 10/22 stainless, birch stock with a cheap Sliver scope hammered for $550.

The only rifle that went for decent money was a lefty Weatherby vanguard 308, I believe, for $700.

I tried for some .40cal, but wasn't willing to pay the prices.

Ha you can buy a 1,400 round bucket for $225 online at Buds, been listed for many days now . I don’t think we’ll see full shelves in stores for maybe two years . Check this out , it’s from a small ammo maker who caters to the  competitor shooter who doesn’t  reload I guess.

They listed 300,00 rounds of 9mm and it all sold in under three minutes !

My latest purchase was some 20 Ga slugs for my daughters 870 ( back up gun ) I requested to be notified when they came in , last October, and got notified last week , a good five months later . Oh and they had a whole 29 boxes, I took five not wanting to be greedy .

Oh I’m going shooting tomorrow, a couple hundred 9mm and maybe a couple dozen 00 Buck, through my Benelli, hot weather’s a coming .

The notification systems work great, even if it takes a while.

Everything I needed to load some rounds came this week; bullets, powder, magnum rifle primers.

Look outside the box on bullets. The solids I'm loading are standard for what I'm doing, but the are made overseas and they have been making regular shipments. Took 2 weeks off a notification list.
