moog5050
Man I remember that tradition. My grandmother would bake 10-15 different types of cookies starting at Thanksgiving and give everyone these huge homemade cookie trays at Christmas. Us kids would off course sneak out into the 3 season room where they were stored to help ourselves through the process. Butterhorns were my favorite. somehow that tradition was lost on my sisters who are more of the order out types. Lol Enjoy! I cherish what I have each day, fortunate to still have these traditions. Thankfully my wife has alot of the recipes along with my 3 sisters and they all love to cook and carry on the traditions. Otto
Those look delicious! I’ve had them before, but my Mother never made them. Her specialty was Mustazzola, chopped toasted hazelnuts with honey, wrapped in a pastry. Some people add bits of dried fruit, etc. When my wife and I make them later this week, I will post a picture. What part of Sicily is your family from? We are from the Mt Etna area, Linguaglossa. Great grandparents were from Palermo. Boun Natale Piasano! goosifer
This is the first post on this forum where I wish I could give me than one like. I love cookies! When I was a kid my mother would make a bunch for the holidays. Unfortunately, somehow all of her cookie recipes were lost or stolen in the years preceding her death.

Sent from my moto z3 using Tapatalk My mother had in-home caregivers the last several years of her life. Over the years, she accused the caregivers of stealing various things from her. As her memory was not always perfect, I dismissed her accusation regarding the cookie recipes. I figured they were misplaced. But after going through her storage tins of recipes, et al after her death, the cookie recipes were nowhere to be found. So it is possible that they were indeed stolen by a caregiver. Money and jewelry I could understand, but cookie recipes? It will forever be a mystery. I just got back from Pellicano's, a local Italian store. They charge $24/pound for cuccidatis. I paid $6.50 for four regular-sized cookies. Insane! I whined to my wife, and she made it explicitly clear that she would not make them for me. Hoping I can find them cheaper in Niagara Falls.

At that rate my parents probably made like $1,000 worth...lol.. BTW that really sux about your moms recipe, somethings are just irreplaceable. Can't blame your wife, its alot of work to make that fig filling, making the dough is the easy part. If you were closer I'd give you a few, if ever in Brooklyn give me a holla.
Nytracker
I make the pizzells in my family. Vanilla, anise, amaretto, and chocolate. I use an electric iron now but I still have my grandparent's irons stored away. My niece was pretty upset when I let the family know we wouldn't be having Christmas Eve family party . She called and asked if she can come pick up her pizzeles. I told her she needed to come learn how to make her own . Bolt action
My in laws are right off the boat from Realmonte and Cefalù. Their friend, old lady Josephine, makes all the old world favorites. She spoils me whenever i see her. If not for those, if head over to Savoia's in the city. Those are the closest I've seen to the real thing in Rochester, but $$$.
