Looks like a good healthy bunch.  Been an easy winter (knock on wood) so far.  Hoping for a.couple from last season I had on cam make it thru that I am looking forward to chasing around.

Once you get the food plots in and let them feast on it over a winter you can leave a camera up on the plot and watch those bux show up all winter.  It also conditions them for next season and keeps the herd healthy and full.

Yeah, definitely, and that spike is a pretty decent size !  How came they still have their racks I wonder? Should have dropped by now I would think, right? Have anything to do with the mild winter so far?

I keep my cameras up year-round I have noticed they don’t drop most of the time until February and March sometimes earlier sometimes later I’ve had pics of bucks usually smaller with racks into April and I found a little shed one side in December during muzzleloader so I guess it all depends. But usually by the end of February to the middle of March most of them shed At least that’s what the camera show

I used to Take down the cameras once the bucks shed but that is also when I started picking up Turkeys pictures so Now I’ll leave most of the cameras up to see what the upcoming turkey flock looks like and then just flow into summer getting an idea of how the herd is doing.  I enjoy taking hikes and pulling cards frequently believe it may help in long term conditioning

Heavy snow this past week...herd is digging thru over a foot of snow to get to their preferred food source.  Bedding on edge of field next to plots to minimize movement and conserve energy.

Great pics, thanks for sharing.  So, theyre bedding next to the field to save energy? What is that stalk stub in the ground in one of the pics? Is it normally a hay field ??

A little off topic.....how many deer do you try to take off your property in a season.......from all your posts and pics your property looks to hold a pretty large herd.
Just curious what other think or donforbherd management.

Typically 4 to 7 deer a year.   Neighbors also put dent in the herd.  Keep in mind that herd is more concentrated in the winter and food is scarce so they tend to hang close if left unbothered.   Though I will admit the herd is growing in size over past 5 years....food in the winter is key.

Yeah found a couple dozen beds along either sides of the field edges.  Once heavy snows hit they bed close to the food plots and use their energy to DIG to get thru a foot plus of snow to get down to the food rather than travel hundreds of yards to a preferred bedding spot.  Find tons of deer shit around the beds but hardly any in the plots themselves.  They don’t shit where they eat but will 50 yds away.  There has to be over 100 deer divots in the field so more evidence food plots work beyond hunting season.   The green stalks are brassica stalks that are sugary sweet right now. While it can take 2 years for the deer to figure out the plots once they do you can grow the herd.

That last pic is amazing .  All the tracks they def are spending the winter there. Grand Central.

That’s where I found most of the beds and more over by the section of radishes.   I don’t understand how a deer hoofs size and shape allow them to dig such big deep holes in the snow it must take them a while course I guess if you’re hungry and have all day and night.  My field looks like that Disney movie Holes.

Radishes? As in garden or wild?

Pulled card didn’t get to on Saturday a few leftovers and jumped a decent buck out of his bed.  Still hanging close to food.  Shed I found back in December is showing signs of some critter tooth wear too.  Enjoy winter herd monitoring.

Agreed she gets a pass every time she’s a survivor.   She also still breeds here are some pics of her and her fawn from a couple years ago
