Speeding ticket

 My advice to my kids was, keep it under Ten over. Have current reg and insurance cards , where you can easily reach them, inspection and reg stickers up to date . It’s yes sir ,  no sir, I’m sorry sir .

One got one fix it ticket , and one moving violation for when she rear ended a car when she was 16 , 12 years ago . The other never got a ticket and was recently stopped for 70 in a 55, he Actually commented that nobody ever has up to date papers ,when she handed them to him. She was let go .

I was let go by a trooper who's name was tied to the bucky phillips chase , nicest officer i ever met . I was speeding ,expired registration and misplaced my license the day before . We spent about 15 minutes talking about the dirtbike i had in the truck and he took my browning shot gun out and shouldered it a few times and said "nice gun"  All because i showed respect i guess. I've been let go more time then i've been ticketed .

I’m going with the mail-in, will include a letter explaining clean record and “my bad!” Plus a copy of my voluntary enrollment in defensive driving (thanks Caribou).

Be warned.  Taking the defensive driving class is 6 hours you will never get back.  Lol

And I say that after being an instructor for 15 years. 

There are lots of them online now.  

But I think you chose the best way.  Prob will just have to pay the court fee.

I was pulled for speeding quite a few years ago ( jerk youngster ) and when I gave the Trooper my name  he said " why does that ring a bell " and like a fool I said " Maybe you have Tinnitus " and he proceeded to write my a speeding ticket and warned me against pleading  " Not Guilty .. now on your way Asshole " !   Yup I like to learn the hard way !   LOL

I’ve heard that back in the day in certain areas, the cop would make a little mark on the copy that the court got . That mark,let the judge know the driver was a jerk .

I was with another forum member driving through downtown nowhere and a female officer pulled us over for speeding , the other forum member sweet talked his way into her letting him go. Impressive to say the least.

One other significant piece of advice, from my LEO friends and family, when you are asked "Do you know why I am pulling you over?" answer honestly! and not "I don't know".  Many times this is the difference between warning versus ticket.

Small town courts are always interesting.....it's kinda like the show let's make a deal. As long as you are polite and cool......they cut ya a break and still make money for the town.
Funny story a few years back I got a cell phone ticket.....I was using the phone on speaker and moved it from the cup holder to a dash mount holder. The officer was a little off his rocker......read me the riot act and was definitely bating me into an argument. I killed him with kindness and said I was sorry numerous times to the point he had to stop talking cause he even knew he wasn't getting me to bite. Well fast forward to the court date.......everyone there that night got every and any infraction reduced to a fine and no points but everyone got traffic school. The traffic school instructor was a local guy who had been doing it for years and made a ton of money from this side gig( which he thanked us for at the start of class) and the town in turn took a cut since he rented the court room from them for the classes....the whole experience was comical.

Trooper got me but east fishkill court contacted me via mail.

My favorite “I got pulled over” story was a long time ago on the thruway-trooper pulled me over, grabbed my license and reg and headed back to her car. Almost immediately she returned d to my passenger side, opened my door and asked where I was going so fast. I explained and she said well you are going to be late because you need to drive me back to the barracks. She locked herself out of her car with it running and lights on.
Needless to say, I only got a warning. It felt for a very brief moment like the start of a 70s porno!!!!

Ok my favorite from a few years ago on 104 in Wayne county . Trooper pulls me over, now my reg and insurance card are clipped to the sun visor , for easy reach . In the glove box was my 40 cal Glock, we were coming home from ADK, I wasn’t stopping and didn’t feel like holstering it , so it was in the box .

As the Trooper walked up my wife opens the glove box .... I thought about yelling “ she’s got a gun !” But I simply closed it ,and told her the stuff is on the visor .

I read that letter in the Penthouse forum in 1976!

Most local courts are conducting as much "business" via mail as possible, plead not guilty and send the ticket back, then the court will send you a letter with a return date most likely a few months away. The county district attorney's office ADA will review your driving record and that office will offer you a reduced charge (if you record is good). Most likely "parked on highway", "failure to obey traffic control device" or reduced speed charge with less MPH that what you were issued.

The court has no standing on reducing the charge at this point, if you like the offer then plead by mail and move on; if you refuse the offer, appear in court and try to reduce it further with the ADA. Most justices will not make deals at the bench.

Good luck and yes always state the truth when pulled over....

I had gotten a speeding ticket in Walworth several years ago . I pled Not Guilty . When I went to court , the ADA called me off to the side and asked if I was willing to plead to "failure to obey traffic control device" . I said yes . It cost me the same as a speeding ticket plus State surcharge . No points on license .

Did you ever notice that a Trooper or Deputy will tap or touch your driver side tail light . I hadn't until it was explained to me that they leave their fingerprint on your vehicle in case it is necessary to prove that they had stopped your vehicle . So if you speed off and evade them , they presumably have your license plate number , track you down and can prove that they had stopped you elsewhere . An ex Sheriff's Deputy had told me this .......

Don't anyone go out and get a traffic ticket to try to prove me wrong !
