How many deer are killed during gun season? How many during archery? If any bullet/arrow has the propensity to wound regardless of scenario then simple math should tell you that gun season would result in more misplaced shots. No? The average bowhunters kills 1 deer every 3 years. This "the bowhunters are wounding all of the deer" BS is outdated.

Trad bow<(less effective than)compound bow<crossbow<flintlock<shotgun<inline muzzleloader<rifle

shooting at running deer<walking deer<standing deer

Not too complicated, shooting at a running deer with a trad bow is on the stupidest end of the spectrum.......

The next thing is why do drives have to be shots at running deer? I guess like most things folks like to generalize. Drives can be safe, slow and shots at standing still deer. Done right the deer will more than not stop often to check their backtrail. Or when given a sharp grunt, bark or even holler.

I used to holler   "" HEY !!"...  Crude but effective....Been years since I have driven, however..............

I am definitely not with the " bowhunters are wounding all the deer " theory.

I know Squat about Deer Hunting- but Pygmy has hunted all kinds of game. He Knows his stuff.

Get yourself a muzzleloader and try the Holiday season. That is the best thing to come along for deer hunters in NY since they gave the crossbow the rut in the southern zone.

All  kill deer all are effective, it's the hunter who is not proficient with them , I knew a traditional hunter that would put gun hunters to shame..

Neither am I, Andrew....Many fewer bowhunters than gun hunters...I am the furthest thing from being  "anti-bow"....

About time I’m above avg at something I guess ...

And I know I didn’t say bow hunters are wounding all the deer .It was just my opinion that ,bow hunting overall ,wounds more deer than deer drives .Just a simple ,stupid ,irrelevant opinion really .I could be way wrong too .

Much prefer nudging them and bumping them a little to driving them hard. Great way to put some down with some company.

As far as wounding them, no difference really between methods, bowhunting vs driving them. Its not the type of hunting that matters, its the nimrod pulling the string or trigger. Some are good at killing 'em, some aren't. Just the way it is.

Drives are very safe 1 person is in charge, standers go to assigned locations and stay there until drive is done even if they shoot world record buck. They don't move so they can see better or to be more comfortable. This is done for safety,  many deer are shot by the " drivers" and they need to know where everyone is to be safe,  shots from standers are not into the drive but are only at  the deer when past or next to the standers.

Over 30 years of driving and only had to kick one person out for not listening.. there are no second chances   rules are absolute.  Family or not.   Also only one ever kicked out of camp permanently  even with the begging to come back  not happening..

I am not saying there are not good and bad hunters with each weapon. Not my point. Just what weapon effectiveness.

And I’ll take that bet any day. My 7mm mag against his bow. At 10, 20, 30, 50, 100, 250, 350 ………winner gets a hunt in your deer Mecca lol!

I watched one of Dan infalts swamp drive videos. No thanks, they were unloading in 6' tall reeds. Scary stuff.

I don't have any problem with well organized drives with the right people.

  • 2 weeks later...

No deer drives allowed on our property( we own 940,acres in hamilton county ny &,we allow exactly 5 people to hunt it at certain times that I dictate where and when ). Anyone of the 5 we allow to hunt  even thinks about asking or trying to organize a drive will be escorted off and if caught coming back on property I WILL HAVE THEM ARRESTED,  I have no use for deer drives  I do not believe in forcing deer to move  drives are for the lazy useless hunter that doesn't want to WORK for his deer  get off your ass scout , pattern learn the deer's movements
