  1. you really need to rethink that comment "in red" about hunter recruitment. yes, successful at both bringing youth into the game and getting elderly back in. 2 wins for the sport of hunting. it's a no brainer.
  2. I understand your point and the same could be said for a hunter holding a scoped rifle and looking at an animal 700 yards away, and bad shots are taken regardless of weapon used. That's on the hunter not the weapon. Do SUV's really kill people? while it's really all about shooter competence and their familiarity with their chosen weapon and shot distance , I know I'm going to recover more animals taking shots with my Bowtech Invasion compound than I will when shooting my Hoyt Dorado recurve. The same can be said if I compare my Xcalibur to my Bowtech.
  3. It would be illogical to think otherwise.
  4. this is the only cam (P41) that I haven't had over water the last few weeks. pecker head Tom is acting like he's a big deal.
  5. facts: 1) crossbows are easier to shoot accurately than vertical bows. 2) crossbows can be shot off a rest, in prone position, or off a shooting stick tripod greatly increasing both hold and accuracy. 3) greater accuracy leads to a more efficient means of delivering a projectile to the target. 4) greater efficiency leads to an increase in kill and recovery rates. 5) increased recovery rates are a good thing. 6) most hunters including myself support increased recovery rates. 7) most hunters including myself also support crossbow use.
  6. didn't see this before I posted but tells the same story. beware!
  7. yes, Lithium batts will keep your cam powered in cold temps but aren't necessary in temps 40 and above. under these conditions rechargeable NIMH's will save you a lot. another warning about Lithiums. I have used them in the past but they present a significant problem when they start to run down. the problem is they will still show a good charge right before they go dead, so very often you leave them in thinking they have a lot of life left, only to return and find your cam has been dead for some time.
  8. I've had some very good luck in the last 2 weeks:
  9. I agree the option is nice but the part about guys quitting rather than using a crossbow is mostly talk.
  10. so you are shooting in the direction of a house which is not your own? the arrow passes through your target and hits his house. sounds like the house is right behind and fairly close to your target. what made you think that was ok in the 1st place? If I were your neighbor I would asking you to see a doctor and get your head examined.
  11. there are many crossbows today that are built with dry fire protection and some can be uncocked as well. carrying a faux arrow or an old one with a field tip plus washer which can be shot into the ground is another easy method of discharging a crossbow. the vertical design has a plus or 2 but not the ones mentioned above, one thing is for sure. shooting off a shooting stick is a lot easier with a traditional stock where you don't have to position the bow well ahead like you would have to do with this vertical design. you also can't shoot the vertical design where you have little down vertical clearance. prone position? not possible
  12. I'm thinking of 2 possibilities: 1) something in the water; as I just recently caught this Mallard in the same location, or 2) some kind of "Battle of the Titans" going on here. kinda like Sosa and McGwire using human growth hormone, but in this case it's not "HGH", it's "QGH" (quacker growth hormone)
  13. interesting design. there are other crossbows in the 6 lb range and without offset scopes. also looks like that rig would be very front heavy and not balance as well as a bow with a regular stock would.
  14. I'm glad you appreciate the ducks. they are awesome critters and my favorites to target with trail cams.
  15. thanks, yes I do run homebrew units along with some commerial.
  16. thanks. yes, I am and the trail cam unit was partially submerged. the window covering the camera lens was actually 1/3 below the surface as a result of rising water from ice melt combined with rain. I do run high risk sets and have had many a cam go under.
  17. the ducks have arrived here in NY so I came out of my winter trail cam hibernation and put out some cams. after making the rounds last week I was both amazed and frightened at what one of my creekside units had captured. the wood duck drake appears to dwarf the large evergreen tree along side and seems to be taking up half of the width of the creek. estimates put him at 3 meters wide and roughly 500 lbs. not sure I want to go back to that set being that there is a genetic mutant fowl on the prowl. might have to take the shotgun along next time and swap out the #6's with OO buckshot.
  18. the ole short sighted "don't affect me now" mentality. what about tomorrow?
  19. Owl print changed to a square format. these frame sizes are readily available.
  20. these are from my best of the best collection. all captured in New York. the rest can be viewed here. http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/21826-trail-cam-prints-for-sale/#entry290893
  21. nice light in that last eagle pic. congrats
  22. some good ones in there, but my fav is the 2nd buck picture. looks like a painting; beautiful
