  1. I'm a bit confused here. In the image there's what looks like a compass at the bottom which marks east and being up, but the marking you put on the image are the opposite and has east pointing down.
    Which way is actually east?

Aww man your right! I was going off the wind direction and labelling it according to that . good catch ! Amateur hour lol .. I’m going to do a bit more scouting and try and find a good spot on the east and west side of the hill. I just get confused on hunting the leeward side where he would be bedded I would have to get him in a cross wind right?975b9a52136f68372d9b52d4651fd30d.jpg

  2. I would hunt any wind but true north as true South in the am taking advantage of thermals.  I would face stand north .. to much visual hunting imo need to learn to use ears..kill aot more deer that way.  Use sun to your advantage so deer have to look into it in am or pm . That would require 2 stands on on extreme eastern edge and one on western edge.  Can't cover it all with on stand in middle as you will be seen or scented as deer try and go one side or the other .

I have another 3 stands I’m going to put in the general area ..and really try my best to only hunt quality days in order to not burn out the spot .. so in this case in the saddle you would face the stand north and hunt any wind except a north or south ? I appreciate the knowledge man!

  3. I frequently hunt a spot similar to the one illustrated and wind is an important consideration and a reason I do not use permanent stands. The first thing I check is wind direction when going in and that will determine where I will be watching the runs in the saddle. I have several spots surrounding the saddle where I can see well enough to shoot. I simply sit or stand quietly with my back against a tree to break my outline, clear the ground of leaves so I can silently and easily move to a comfortable shooting position if need be and watch, killed a lot of them using that technique.

Thanks for the reply! In this scenario what wind would you hunt if you had a east facing stand?

  4. Good morning, been racking my brain since previous season on this stand location and what wind direction is ideal . With rising thermals and prevailing winds it got a bit confusing for me. There has been obvious deer sign in the saddle and the surrounding area. What do you guys think ? Attached is a topographical picture of the spot with the stand facing the east. Thanks once again for all the help. 1f2ba8907d61fcf739d88aa5ac390fc8.jpg

  5. How’s is going guys,

Headed into some state land this weekend to locate some beds and food source. The area I’m going is pretty dense woods and I always wanted to know what I’m looking for in particular when it comes to a quality fall food source. Am I looking for any specific trees or shrubs? What is it that a good deer Hunter in public looks for and goes “ ahh here it is a good food source”. Thanks for the help

  6. How’s it going guys. So I finally get to use my week vacation to be in the woods next week. The only problem being the weather looks like it’s going to be pretty warm compared to previous days we had. Any advice on how to hunt in these temps. Thanks for the help!

  7. Not ready to eat my tags and headed out into the woods this weekend. How have you guys felt about late season hunts. Any advice besides food source? Are the morning or evening hunts best or should I tough it out with a all day sit. Thanks guys

  8. Hows it going guys. I always seem to have this problem every year.. when is the predicted rut dates this year for New York and what the best way to hunt it. Are you guys doing all day Sits or splitting the day up.

  9. How is it going guys I was just curious on how you use doe estrus ( liquid form on wicks) during the deer season to your advantage. How would you use the wind to get the scent to benefit in relation to where I’m sitting on my treestand. Hope this made sense thank you again guys for the help.

  10. Hello guys, so I was curious what you guys do in order to keep your feet warm in the more brutal moths of the season where an all day stay is a must. Nothing cuts my stay short except cold feet ( or hands) Any specific brands of boots/socks you go with? Any layering systems ? Thanks guys

  11. Good morning guys. So I went up to the top of public land where I have a couple trail cams right by a saddle of the mountain. The cams picked up only doe but a lot of them. The area seems to be heavily used by them but no buck. The cams where there from July to end September. So basically am asking is this still a good place to set up for the season? Thanks guys

  12. You can't always. Aerial photo's are a tool, but you really need to get in there to do some scouting to find out what's it's like! If it's too thick to bow hunt, check out along the edge.

That’s what I was thinking of doing possibly doing (the area is on public land that was logged a few years back) .. the clearing has a awesome watering hole and apple trees around it. The high (and I mean high grass/vegetation ) is full of deer trails running to the watering hole to the edge of the thick wood.

  13. If it's that thick it's where you should be.

I always hear that’s the case but how would you hunt something that’s thick that doesn’t offer good shooting range for a bow. Could be a real amateur question but how does someone set up in the thick?

  14. Boots on the ground should be the deciding factor.

Man just like you said boots on ground really told me that even tho the topo map showed some good stuff the actual terrain was impenetrable. This hurts because I was “sure” of it. I’m not going to lie my moral took a beating today.

  15. Ok... I hope I make sense with this post... I’m going to hunt public land that’s attached to my private land ( the private sector is crazy pressured by the neighbors). I did a little research on reading and understanding topo maps to use the public land to my advantage (see attached photos of topo and satellite images). And here is what I was planning. I was going to hunt a water source then realized it was super low on the hill and near the back road... then realized there was a decent saddle by the top of that hill which connects to surrounding private land and another saddle to the right of that ( indicated by my drawn arrow). Now I know wind thermals plays a big role in this but I was just curious what you guys thought about this set up. I was planning on setting a tree stand both high up by either saddle and one low by the water source and try and get and early season and early gun hunt in on either one of those stands depending on wind . Should I try and hunt high in the morning and low

at night because of raising and dropping thermals. How would you guys hunt this or do you think I should just scrap the idea and try something else. I know a lot more goes into this but I hope I made sense.8d527275d13ed3a5879a579847aaf58b.jpg6a1ce21b574f5abd61358240fb8e202c.jpg

  16. Goodmorning Gentleman,

I am a resident of Brooklyn New York ( about a 3 hour drive to my hunting location) and work as a local 3 electrician that’s only allowed 2 weeks worth of vacation a year. Now the question is what weeks/days out of the hunting season are a MUST to be in the woods this year so I can put in for my vacation days. I guess the peak of the rut? or is this something we don’t know yet. I hunt the 4w region of New York . Thanks for the help guys
