1. Well, it happened. I harvested “the big one” (as per my youngest daughter ordered, and the one that me and my oldest daughter came across once). Day two of rifle season 2020 is one to remember. Coming onto this handsome buck who was strutting his stuff as the king of the hill was an an amazing experience.

I walked from my spot towards a path several deer crossed, and there he came down a hill. He came down the hill like a king. I stopped in my tracks as my heart began to pump harder and faster. He had three doe right behind me, and one spotted me. I thought I was toast. Then another smaller buck pushed the three doe out and walked over to this big fella. The two bucks stayed in one spot over 40 minutes. I didn’t have a shot, and there were deer all over. Moving at this point was not an option. Sure my legs went numb after watching them hang out over 53 minutes without presenting a shot, but I got him.

The two bucks finally made their way down the hill towards the opening for a shot but my rifle misfired. I had to pump it the get the next shell, but they spotted me in doing so. I had to rush the 75-85 yard shot without a scope. My body went into shock mode. Did I get him? To top this crazy morning off the shot was a clean shot, and he didn’t travel far.

The two bucks were right behind the Y tree and on the other side of the pine.

This was the opening I shot through. You are looking passed the leaves , passed the pine, over big grass, and they were on the other side of the field. db6e92fd4ce7abff8ee65738e7babda1.jpg

It going to lie. I didn’t think I made a good shot in the heat of the moment. I was in shock when we found him. Let alone not far from the shot.

The girls were supper excited.

I’m supper thankful to have gotten this opportunity. Thank you buck.

2. I dropped my deer off Monday.  I wont use anyone else.  Expensive, but great people to deal with, and I don’t have to worry.  A lot of horror stories about wrong poses, extremely long wait time, etc from OTHER taxi shops in the area.  Don’t hesitate.
I would speak to Bob, or his son.  The woman behind the desk knows her stuff to a point, but found her to be more into her phone this particular visit.  The father, and son, are extremely genuine, and that means a lot to me when we are dealing with memories of a lifetime, its not worth saving $100-$200 elsewhere in my opinion.
I hope this helps

Just dropped this guy off. I will have to be patient the way I was this morning before I took a shot. 264bf55038dba67175be089055d52f7a.jpg

Wow, you guys are all local to me.

I believe those hunting clubs require BIG money to join.  There is one on Pine Kill over a small bridge, I heard years ago that it was $10k to join, no clue how true.
Jville, you are in a GREAT area for bear, tons, and TONS of bear in the Westbrookville/Cuddebackville/Oakland Valley/Forestburgh area and up!

I know a few guys who just got bear on Oakland Valley Rd at a hunting club.

I know of a Hunting club off Paradise Rd up on Oakland Valley, another off Peenpack Trail I believe, you have Otisville Sportsman, and a few off South Rd by the Bashakill.
I don’t know contact info honestly
The further up you go from your area, the less the deer density becomes, but bear are numerous, but still not seen as often as deer.

Wow. I didn’t know this area was known for bear. I will have to look into everything you shared. Thank you for the information.

5. To big?? If you mean The draw length....that will cause you to push or pull shots.

Yes. Sorry. Still learning the terminology. Nick, the gentleman who helped me, said that it will be fine for the minor basic mechanics as a start. The pulling back, and finding and anchor point. The locating a target, and releasing. He said that adjusting to the correct point of release should be quick when I’m ready to by a new bow.

First time shooting ever at 20 yards. I did go for the middle once, and the top right twice. Shooting a Proline Zephyr XE-II Compound Bow that was handed down to me and restrung by the guys at B and B Archery in Middletown NY. The bow is just a tad too big, but I’d say that it’s close for my first time shooting a bow at 20 yards.

8. My father used to own the Wurtsboro Hotel, lol. We had a weekend place “up the hill” in Mountaindale. I would have deer and bear in the yard all the time, but that was before I hunted. I was the first hunter/fisherman in the family and had to learn almost EVERYTHING the hard way.
Don’t know much about hunting up there as I am on “the Island” and its bow only down here until shotgun season in January.

Thank you. I’m all for learning the hard way. I can say that I am self taught in most everything that I consider a hobby. I just have a respect for the deer/bear, and would love to make sure that I learn as much as I can before I go out to release my fist arrow towards them. I would also love to get to know the community of hunters around me. That is one aspect of hunting that I miss now that my family is lacking hunters. There is something special about sharing the experience with those who appreciate the sport.

9. Hello. I’m new to the Wurtsboro area, and I’m looking to join a community of hunters who are willing to share their knowledge and passion for hunting in this area. I get that some of us want to keep our hunting knowledge and spots a secret, and I respect that. My interest is to find a community to be a part of. The hunters in my family are few, and my ability to travel to our small family property is hindered by my prenatal and professional responsibility, and distance from our new home. I do see that there is land that is registered to the Westbrookville Rod and Gun Club, but I have been unsuccessful in finding any information on how to contact a member of the club. I have also seen posted signs for a Pine Kill Rod and Gun Club with the same result.

I have been hunting during the rifle season for the last 16 years, and i am beginning to practice shooting a bow to hopefully bow hunt for the first time next year. I’d be happy just finding someone (or a community) who is willing and able to show me the ropes for bow hunting.

Thank you for your time.

10. We have a bit over 650 acres. And have a good chunk of state land that borders ours. We also have some very thick spots that are tough to drive. But that is where the deer are shortly after firearms opener. To make two man drives successful, you have to know the land very well. We have hunted here all our lives.

Thank you for getting back to me. I just feel bad. My father in law is the one I usually hunt with on the land that he grew up on. We had access to approximately 300-400 acres that was an estate when I first started hunting with him . The estate has subdivided and we have not been allowed to hunt the parcels that are vacant. It’s hard to watch him every time we decide how we are going to hunt the 30 acres we are now limited to. He actually grew up getting to hunt over 800 acres. I think the other part that hurts him is that the camp camaraderie is not there. Neither of his daughters hunt, and we don’t have the gatherings that we used to. I’m hoping that we are able to build on the memories he has. I love driving, but I don’t think it is the smartest way to hunt our property.

11. Did my first deer drive in 1973. Back then the older guys organized the drives, and did it with military precision. Everyone knew their place, and a lot of deer were killed and tagged with party permits. Everyone got some meat.
When the old guys passed on, the big drive heydays were over. Because new guys coming in, wouldn't or couldn't do it the way we were used to. Nobody would listen. Everyone wanted to be the planner, even if they didn't known the land! If the brush was too thick, they'd walk around it. If the hill to steep they couldn't keep up. If left to stand, they'd move or even leave if they got too cold! And drivers who just plain got lost, and wouldn't answer calls!
It became dangerous, and absolutely no fun at all. Eventually, my hunting partner and I just stopped inviting "them" to hunt with us. We were called greedy, and some "other" names. Too bad, our land! We'd had enough BS!
But.....my hunting partner and I, over the last 25-30 years have become masters of the two man drive! And have both killed many deer the other has put to him. We usually will do it towards the end of the season. And usually the one with no buck tag left, pushes for the one that hasn't shot a buck. Or if we want an extra doe for the freezer. We both know exactly what the other is doing at any point. And it's a blast!
Very seldom now, will we ever join someone else's drive. Or invite someone on ours. If we do have guests, Gary and I will personally place them to stand. And we push to them.

How much land do you and your partner have? My father in law loves to put drives on, but I convinced him that there’s too little land for us to do it between the two of us and the deer keep passing through points were we are not standing. I love drives in that I get to see more of the woods, crazy things can happen when deer do move (I had several pass almost run me over once), and you stay warmer. I do miss the old days too when more family was involved hunting and making drives. We had access to many acres of land and all different terrain, but those days have passed.

12. Would you drive a 42 acre property surrounded by woods with two people or still hunt it?

I try to sit and still hunt it but others want to put drives on. My thought is that putting the drive puts too much pressure on the deer. We are also limited to entrance points due to the influx of houses on surrounding lots.

Your thoughts.

13. 26 seasons into my career, I finally punched a tag on my bday. It was definitely an interesting day, with a fantastic finish.

Started my day heading to the stand with thoughts of helping and the how to's of recovering The_Real_TCIII friends buck. As I got to the top of my ladder stand, I was greeted by 30-40mph winds and also noticed one of the stand supports had broken. I hadn't even started my bday buck quest and I was already back out of the stand and heading to help on the recovery. We ended up, with the help of a friend and his dog "sky" recovering the deer after what looked like a bad situation. So, I was happy, I at least got to touch a dead buck on my bday which was much more than the last 25 years!

Came home, shot the xbow a few times and got ready to head out. My wife reminded me that the kids didn't have school and she would be home in an hour, so I decided to wait. Kids got home, we did some presents and cards, then I went to head out. Before I left, my son insisted that I take a good snack to the stand so I complied. He started with a bag of oreo's which I told him had too noisy of a wrapper, so he dug around in his bag and pulled out a Hershey bar ( my least favorite candy bar) and to save time I said that'll work. He looked at me with a funny face, and instructed me to make sure I wave it around so that the deer would smell it and come in. We laughed about it as I pretended to wave the candy bar all around like an idiot, and off I went. I was on stand for about an hour when I remembered I had a chocolate bar in my pocket.... So out it came. I figured I'd keep the joke going and send my wife a video to show to my son of me waving the candy bar around like a fool. Sent the video, ate the candy bar, and put the wrapper in my pack. Within 6 minutes I heard crashing behind me to my right and out pops a nice doe on high alert. I grabbed a pic to send to my wife to let my son know it worked !! I was literally laughing in my head about it when to my left I hear corn stalks breaking .... I looked around but couldn't see any movement. All of a sudden, there he was, coming right down the path to be directly under my stand. I saw a big body so I grabbed the bow and stood up. He was on a mission and was heading right for me when he did something foolish, he made a hard left and started head out in the corn and away from me, at 15 yards...... MEHHP, whack, then he made the most amazing sound on impact I've ever heard, which I've now named the "death grunt". I immediately saw him opened up and watched him plow through the corn, and into the thickets. The emotions that came after that is the reason I do what I do, and why I'm in the woods !!

I called my dad and he immediately knew the deal, cause there's no other reason to call when it's 5pm during primetime. Got down, collected myself-ish, and called my wife to have her bring my son to help with the track.

So my dad, and me, led by my son (5 years old) follow the blood trail about 85 yards to a fantastic deer we've had on the farm for years, known as the pirate, or 1-eyed willy due to only one eye lighting up on night time cam pics. I was absolutely amazed that my boy seems to have the natural ability to track ! He did awesome.

I cannot tell you how much this deer means to me for so many reasons, and honestly the last on the list is his score. What a fantastic bday it was !
