  1. In 4G-use a Remington 30-06 model 740 In 7R- use Remington 1100, 12 gauge
  2. First time I used my new 54 caliber muzzleloader for deer- Loaded it in the cabin before leaving for my ground blind. Placed percussion cap on it at blind. About 1 hr. later ther biggest 10 pointer I have ever seen came about 20 yards away from me. Pulled hammer back and only thing that went off was the cap. Good bye deer. Placed new cap on it and it fired. Lesson learned was to fire caps before loading gun.
  3. I guess that I overkill my backpac. I bring a military poncho, tree umbrella, tee shirt and sweatshirt, dry socks,2 knives, wool skarf, 2 pair of gloves, drag rope, water, compass, whistle, hand brush cutter,4 pac of hot hands, string to tie tag on, matches. I know that this a lot but you never know what you are going to need when you spend the whole day on a post.

    4G

Got to my ladder stand, on my property, about 9am(overslept). About 10 minutes went by when a big doe walked in . Place a shot right behind shoulder. It is hanging now.
  5. Question-I have access to an area that produces a large quanity of acorns. If I collect these and spread them about in the area that I hunt, is this baiting? I know what the answer is but was just curious what others think

    4G

Well it looks like things might be picking up. I went out this pm and saw 1 doe but to far away for a shot. When I came home and looked out my bedroom window later, were 6 does and 2 buck in my back yard. Bucks were a 4pt and the other a long spike. Both buck were pushing each other for quite a while Maybe it is the start of the rut

    4G

Have been out in the afternoons for past 5 days and only seen 3 does. Much to far away for a shot. Hopefully things will get better then last year.
  8. In 1956 at age 14, I pestered my father to take me hunting. He didnt hunt at that time. After so time he relented and bought me my first shotgun(Remington 870). We hunted together for a while, me with my shotgun and he just following. Finally he purchased a shotgun and we hunted together for the next 25 years for rabbits and deer until he passed away. I hunt today with friends but still miss my best friend and hunting partner.
  9. Applied for 4G and 7R. Was shocked that I got both
  10. Got my licence in the mail today. Went to Walmart and got both DMP permits. Also my bow hunting and muzzleloader licence all free. What a country,LOL
  11. I just purchased Bushnell trail camera and placed it on my property yesterday. Was just wondering how long do I leave it there and reposition it to another area? Thanks for any assistance
  12. I have been thinking of using a decoy this fall, never have used one, but have questions. Do you face the decoy toward you? use scent on the decoy? and any other info you may have. Thanks
  13. Received a reply from Senator J. Seward about use of crossbow during archery season, S6747- Senate approved it, Assembly did not pass. Owing to Assembly failure to pass, Legislature opted to extend current law permitting use of crossbow during regular (fireams) Big game Season
  14. I read all the entries on this post and I came to one conclusion. Seems the Bow Hunters Assn. thinks they have the right to make decisions for all hunters. I take exception that this organization speaks for me. I have been hunting deer with a recurve and compound bow for 40 plus years and do not own a crossbow. Would like to see crossbow be included into the archery season. Just my opinion
  15. I just want to add my thoughts in. I was taught to hunt by my dad who stressed safety and always wear BO in gun season. Better to be seen then not, he used to say. Now I have my grandson hunting and the same advise is projected to him.
  16. Well the season is over. Put a lot of time in on my property, seen nothing. Seems like each year the deer sightings in my woods is getting less and less. Have seen more deer from my windows inside my home. Go figure. Am looking for a new spot for next year. Merry Christmas everyone
  17. I have heard so many horror stories about guys falling out of tree stands. I have 2 ladder stands on my property which I use. From the minute that I start climbing the ladder, I am attached to a safety line with my harness via pursait(sp) knot. It stays attached until I get my feet on the ground. My buddy says I am too perinoid about falling but so be it.
  18. Was wondering if anyone has had any luck in 4G. Only seen 2 small does since opening day
  19. Have been hunting in 4G in the afternoons since opening day and only seen 2 samll does. Depressing
  20. I own a M1 garand that I would like to use for hunting deer. Military ammo is full metal jacket. I am wondering if anyone has information where I could buy hunting 30-06 ammo that would not damage the operating rod of my weapon. Thanks for any assistance
  21. I was hunting on opening day using my 54 caliber muzzleloader for the first time. At about 7:30 I saw the biggest body 8point coming my way. When he got about 25 yards away standing broadside, I brought up my muzzleloader for a easy shot. I pulled the trigger and the only thing that went off was the percussion cap. The deer just turned and walked off. Afterwards I tried to fire the gun again and it went off.
  22. Well it seems that the archery season will pass me by this year. I have to go for back surgury again shortly and all the practice that I did this summer will go for nothing. Since the anti crossbow organizations and the DEC have closed out the use of crossbow in the archery season for me , I fell that there is no alternative left for me since I am 70 and will be diabled to draw my compound bow during the season. Just wanted to let my feelings be known.
  23. I have been listening about the pros and cons of the use of crossbows in the archery season for some time now. All I have to say for my 55 years of hunting is "For those who object get you heads out of the sand" Welcome this weapon into the fold. If this weapon is not for you so be it but don't make decisions that effert others who would like to hunt with it. Just my opinion.
  24. Hello , I'm Richie from Schoharie County. Just wanted to introduce myself
