Always have done legs up but could care less what others do. I thought your pics showed a happy hunter with a great looking deer.

Sorry surf but you just did comment. I think you are taking the phrase "getting dark" out of context. It's a phrase. No one is saying it IS DARK. It's getting dark. Just like when a thunderstorm rolls through you hear people sometmes say " it got really dark out". I really can't see how anyone can debate that it starts to get darker as the sun is hitting the horizon. Seriously. It is darker then it was 30 minutes before that is it not. ??

Sorry to change the subject but just got picture from a buddy who did my last mount. He just slayed a beast just outside Letchworth Park. Don't want to post pics til i get the OK or until he posts them himself and gets the due credit. Heard he stalked it and killed it. Its a good one, trust me..

Good stuff Sam.. Pretty good beams and looks like he has everything he needs to be a real brute if he lives another year or two. Not too many others out there are going to let him walk though.

Very nice buck Larry. Is that a recent pic? He almost looks like he's still in velvet..?? Clearly a mature shooter..

JFB, You came on this site after being away for "years" and your very first post started with a bitch about the site, (which is not the same site) the moderators(non of which i have ever met in my life) and the members themselves. You clearly had something to get off you chest and when it looked really whiney, you were made aware of it. Had you simply stated your experiences on the subject, i may very well have agreed with the context of it and may have even liked it myself, but you didn't. Bottom line is you have to have a sence of humor for God's sake. And as i have found a few times myself, you have to be man enough to take it on the chin when you really step in it. Being able to step back and say to yourself. "maybe that was the wrong thing for me to say" is not a bad thing on a forum. Being able to debate and then think about others points of veiw and maybe even have your mind changed by other opinions is not a bad thing. So go if you must, or stay if you want. You clearly have some knowledge that could be very useful to many on here, but don't whine about the bickering when you clearly started the rant.

I kinda agree with newbreeds comment. I hunted a creek bottom last night and it was definetly "getting dark" well before sunset. By about 6:15 i was thinking to myself that if a buck comes through, he better be close or i'll never see the twigs that might be in the way. Imo it quite often gets "darker" before the sun hits the horizon, especially if it's an overcast day and i just think it was a phrase. Kinda like when we say "last light".

JFB. Thanks for sharing one more bit of wisdom before you left with your skirt wedged in your crack.

Thanks ya'll for the congrats. By the way, i personally have no problems with how you hang em'. I have always done legs up but i don't know anyone that somehow equates hanging by the neck with being dis-respectful to the deer. Seems to me to be just whatever you were brought up doing.. Looks like a great and memerable hunt to me. Congrats.

Cool pics Larry. That flying deer is wicked cool. Pretty impressed that Wildgame took a pretty good pic even though that deer is clearly movin'..

I'm sure i would love the simpler tackle, but what i was really referring to is the culture of bow hunting. With the TV and the X box hunting games and the over commercializing of the industry, it just seems that it must have been cool when you were the only one in the woods hunting with a bow. And you were learning it from experience, not from a magazine.. Now a days, anyone with cable can be a bow hunting expert..

If i only had two days to take off it would be mon and tue (5th and 6th). That would give you the weekend and those two days. I personally would not wait and pick a day after the 10th if you can help it. Lock down is a real possibility after that. First week is always better IMO. Then use the 2 other days in gun. I like hunting the opener but i find the very end of the season to be good as well because by then things have settled down a bit and the woods are a bit quieter.

Welcome to the Hemi Nation..

Your points are so true Arrow. . I have 2 great stands that have cover, food, water and bedding areas on all 4 sides. The deer can come from any direction, and they have, at any given time. The other thing that gets me is i hear guys saying all the time that you need to put your stands down wind of the deer trail. Well i don't know about you, but i can count on one hand the number of mature bucks i have ever seen on a well used deer trail. Sometimes those trail stands can end up being sucker stand locations. Don't get me wrong, i do still try to adhere to that rule if i can because i certainly don't want to educate all the does that do use them, but my best buck stands have very little to do with trails, and alot to do with terrain features and thick cover wind advantages. As for picking stands, i have about 15 to choose from and the choice is sometimes painful. I lie awake at night. I think about it the whole way there. I sometimes can't make my mind up until i'm walking in. It's so nerve-racking. LOL

I do everything almost exactly as you do except i will put it on the last layer before my outermost layer. Well i say that but sometimes if its warm out and theres a chance that i will never put on my jacket that i carry strapped to my pack for the walk in, then i will put it under the outer layer that im walking in with.. At any rate, it is always on underneath my outer clothing. Much more comfortable this way and no restrictions to your pockets. Also never any fear of noisy buckles clanging against something at the wrong time. I use a Hunters Safety Systems Ultra Light Harness.. Love it.

Whitetail. I might be agreeing with some of your statements if the evidence were different. and i'm not trying to speak for Geno who i'm sure will respond with his own thoughts, but in my opinion this deer is not dead.. You can search all season and call in the dogs and the national guard, but if all the sign on your arrow and on the ground indicate that it was a grazed animal with a flesh wound, then you will never find this deer no matter what. A clean arrow with hair on the ground and no blood found after two searches says to me a grazed deer that will be fine. A bloody or gut junk covered arrow with some sign of blood and i would be encouraging for more searching myself, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
-
I hope i'm wrong but i think Geno has thought this through and came up with a pretty good assessment of what happened. Nothing i've read indicates anything different then a grazed deer that will be chasing the women(does) maybe by today.
-
Boy i wish things had turned out different for you Geno. Lets hope you can get another crack at him down the road..
-
Gosh geno, i sure am pulling for you but i have to admit the most disturbing part of the story is the lack of blood on the shaft. Just can't see how an arrow can zip through the lungs and not leave blood especially on the fletches.. Hope i'm wrong and you post some happy pics in the morning..

I've never really thought of them as cheap. They are pretty much in line with the other premium heads out there. $34.99 . for 3 pack . Certainly there are some more expensive like the titanium ones but either way, they are tough, accurate and i love putting my own edge on them..

Spot on Phade, Cool video Sam and it certainly does not surprise me that a small percentage of does may be coming in a month early. Given the date of this video (10-7-12)and from what i've been seeing this past week, if we follow this out 28 day then the sweet spot of chasing should be right on schedule with what i've seen every year. Nov 2 to about the 9th or 10th with the 6th or 7th being the "must be in the woods" days..
