  1. Savage a17. Semi auto. For 350-400, then optics you have a nice coyote rig and the ability to plink for cheap
  2. I get it, but without saying its junk or its the best, I want to make sure people understand the differences before they purchase...
  3. Streamlight is awesome. Perfect brightness settings and appears to have a phenomenal battery life. Waterproof, ergonomic, easily packable... Its the one ! I cut up a red lens I had on an old spotlight and it works perfect.
  4. So it looks like my dad wants to hold off till we can find one local to shoot, so if you guys know anybody willing let me know !
  5. I know they have come a long way, but I would do your research on a poly lower... They are cheaper but not much lighter, and if you are going to use your AR in the field, look into forged / aluminum.
  6. There's lots of RIGHT ones, and I believe there's lots of wrong ones. I think some may say .xxx is right, simply because they have one, and have killed with it. My questioning is in the whole too big/ small talk. Why even go there is what I wonder. If your framing a house you don't bring a ball peen hammer. Will it work though ? When you go drag racing, you don't take the minivan. Could you win though ? When you go for a jog, you don't wear winter boots. Can you still jog? But, if you only have a ball peen, some winter boots and a mini van, can you still be successful ?
  7. Whitetail, blacktail,sitka,mule or rain....?
  8. That we argue over caliber so often? Well, maybe not argue, but discuss with emotion. I seem to see the same .223 post ever deer season ! So, I assume a few things ... Is it the fact that someone only has access to that smaller rifle? Do they want to see how many pages of funny can come from it ? Can they get free ammo ? Are they looking to shoot bear and woodchucks with the same gun ? I guess I don't see why someone wants to know if they can " get away" with a small caliber rifle for deer, or a .22 for coyote... Let's face it,you can buy a Remington 700 in .243 or in 30-06 and not pay a substantial amount more ! Or, you can get the cheapest of cheap .308 bolt action and find a .22 that costs 2x that. As far as ammo, if you keep on topic of hunting loads, there again is no difference from hornady .308 down to the .223 or even 12ga sabots. Yes, there is shot placement. Obviously. I believe you could take a deer with a .177 pellet gun if you had a heart shot. As I mentioned in a post earlier, Indians killed bison with sticks and stones ! But it can't be a question of shot placement, because you could wound a deer with a RPG and still not recover it. I hunt deer with a 6mm rem. And for one reason only, it was my grandfathers rifle. I have never lost a deer, ever. Haven't ever had to track over 50 yrds.. But if I went to the gun shop for a deer rifle, I would not get a 6mm. It to me is on that cusp of " too small". Here me out guys and gals and lets see if we can all agree on something. Whether WE believe it's too small or too big, it CAN kill... And it can NOT kill. Right ? Is it logical, or ethical to try and hunt big or small game with the smallest possible caliber, if we are 100% confident it will kill ? If you are shopping for a new gun, do you want to make an investment in something that will hands down get the job done? Or do you want to punch paper every weekend so your kill shot game is on point , and not realize there is always room for error and jump up to something larger that can " help "? Don't really know where this rant is coming from I guess... I just don't get the full story ( I think ) when it comes to caliber talk.
  9. And another thing, there are a zillion add ons you can get to personalize an AR. Simple things like a new pistol grip or a trigger can easily help accuracy and comfort.
  10. So between all the arguing, are you narrowing it down to anything?Let me back up my recommendation. I started predator hunting with a Remington 597 semi auto .22, lost two dogs after a long track job and decided to switch, started taking out my Remington mod 700 in 6mm ( basically a .243), had multiple dogs come in on a perfect set and there was no way I could get a second shot off at another dog...besides the fact it did terrible things to the pelt. So I saved my pennies and got the AR. Not only is it at tack driver at any range, but follow up shots are a breeze. Vmax 53 grain are also pretty easy on the pelts. Its my yote, fox, Chuck and " fun " gun. Ammo for paper is cheap, anybody can shoot it and have lots of fun at the range. A bolt action will save u some $$ but I think you may want to consider an AR. My .02
  11. Dpms. They are all solid shooters. You should plan on getting a new trigger though. They do have some " hunting " models too
  12. Mini 14 / 30 won't really save you much vs an AR. Unless you can find one used, but I highly doubt that.
  13. Native Americans killed Buffalo with a sharp stick.... Regardless, check out the 300 blackout specs...pretty nifty round, basically a .223 As far as my HO, I wouldn't consider a .223 unless it was my only option, and if I did, I'm confident I'd kill deer
  14. So I have one taker... Looks like I'll be out sat a.m. and Sunday pm... Weather is not great but I'm open minded !
  15. Yea, learned too many times about getting what you pay for. I just like my gear to work...rest is up to me !
  16. Found it. Kinda far. I believe brand new at cabelas is 569, 669 w/ 3-9 Bushnell. Not sure its worth the 3 hr ride ( not my money ). But thanks for the heads up !
  17. Dpms ar15, 16" stainless bull barrell ( all safe act compliant) Nikon 3-14, hornady 53 grain, bog pod, foxpro shockwave w/ foxjack, streamlight 1000 lumen scan light/ red lens, streamlight 400 lumen kill light, mojo lifesize yote decoy, cabelas gobbler seat... Gosh. I'd rather not keep going since its depressing the amount of $$ I have into this !!!
  18. Since its apparent everybody seems to be saying the kick isn't too bad, I may have just misread reviews a few years ago and was researching the 212.... Very possible. Either way The gun is on order so we still have a bit of time to shoulder one.
  19. Appreciate all the feedback guys!just to clarify a bit, the only known issues with ejection is with the 11-87, not the 220. As far as heading to Livingston county..thank you so much for the offer. Its at least an hour away. I'm hoping we can find someone closer but I will def keep u in mind ! If your our only option I will def look you up
  20. Put a lot of rounds through it so far. Only issues was when we used low brass crap target loads for trap shooting in the back yard. Has no prob with any high brass turkey loads so I have to assume a nice 2 3/4" hornady slug should cycle fine.
  21. Idk. I think he will just buy it anyways, I had mentioned that if he doesn't like it I'll buy it at a discounted rate. Lol. Since I'm such a great son.
