  1. Enjoy the great morning, good luck....I had very good action this time of day this season. I heard very little this weekend but the birds were all around me and receptive to occasional light to moderate calling. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. Thanks everyone...I learned alot this weekend about using a bow on armor plated Turkeys! I did use a barronett grounder 250 blind and rage broadheads...I wanted to do the broadside wing breaking technique as the idea of keeping the bird from flying after the shot sounded logical. The issue was the 2 blades really had a problem getting by the wing feathers in tact. The initial shot penetrated the chest cavity but the rest of the body shots just slid up inside the skin along the ribcage. I will now only attempt inside 20 yd neckshot/decapatating type shots, the 2 blade did the job when I finally took a shot at his neck. I also love the one handed operation of my MAD hatchet box call...very nice for bow hunting. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. I rushed into my first lease last year, I loved the farmer/owner but the land just couldn't hold deer. I got into this years with a strong potential to buy sometime between now and the end of the lease term. I'm already sick of looking for land for lease or to purchase... I'm liking this lease property so far so we will see. I know some lease companies do 3,5 or even 10 year leases. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. Got one of em with the string and stick(s) today: http://huntingny.com/forums/index.php?/topic/22561-Meat-Manager-contest-thread/page__view__findpost__p__300943 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. I'm loving my Grounder 250! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. Today I scored my first harvest on this property, 5th bird I called-in there this weekend: Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. I'm just gonna keep it under 20 yds and go for the neckshot from now on. Either a miss or rapidly fatal hit that way. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. 5/4 9:50am, 19lbs, 7 1/2" beard, 7/8" Spurs: His feathers surely did take a beating...I told the story on the Spring Turkey Report Thread: http://huntingny.com/forums/index.php?/topic/22421-TURKEY-REPORTS---SPRING-2014/page__view__findpost__p__300925 My first turkey harvest with the bow! 9. 30 minutes ago I had another pass me at 30, then gobbled from above. I hit a few purrs on the mad hatchet and he swung back around and gave me a broadside 15 yarder out my side window. Hit em a tiny bit back from where I intended but I saw that he was really hurtin but trying to get away. I got out of my blind and saw him in a pile about 60 yds out but still moving like crazy. I cut him off using my Loggingtrail and got within 30 yards and fired a clear body shot (his head was moving too much to waste that shot). I nocked another got up to about 10 yards and buried another in him...Out of arrows but he was still alive. I realize I had more arrows in the truck so I went back to get three more arrows and had to sink all two of them into this guys neck to finish him: One tough bird! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. Brush your blind in heavy after you stake your blind with good aftermarket stakes. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. Had 1 come through the way the last 2 did yesterday at about 30 yds but no shot offered so I tried to get out and cut him off but I got busted halfway thru my stalk. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. Had a silent fella scoping my hen from about 65 yards out, he moved on...haven't heard a bird though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. There is no such thing as an actual population number which is why the DEC does not release such a thing. They get an accurate take number from cooperative hunters statewide (that is the OP here), using that and other survey methods they come up with population densities. Then the local CTF determines the local priority factors and determine how many does should be culled (not based on buck/doe ratios or carrying capacity). Then basically they have to multiply that number by 6.5 (since only 15% of dmps get filled) to hand out enough permits to actually take enough breeders. The WMU breakdown will get released in some way or another soon, if nothing else the number of permits allocated per WMU divided by 6.5 tells you approximately how many does the CTF/DEC wants culled. If you are really concerned call the DEC. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. 2 nice grouse just passed by. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. Hen set and Im In the blind before the rain shower hit. Drizzle, gusty and 43 in 7j. Switched to my 2 blade hypodermics hoping for some better penetration. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. You are asking for numbers that either have not yet been published (wmu/regional breakdown), will not be published, or are not compiled by the state on a thread about numbers that have. If you have better statewide take figures or methods of obtaining such figures lets hear them....when the WMU take numbers are released discuss them then. Right now we are dealing in statewide deer take numbers. This notion that this state agency is less equipped to manage a herd statewide then you or whoever else you had in mind (since you haven't mentioned any shining beacons of deer stewardship yet) is ridiculous and only encourages people to be uncooperative and counterproductive. 17. More accurate than nothing at the very least. It's a Wildlife Management Unit, not Deer. The only "real" numbers are deer take and I do not believe they have released the breakdown by unit yet. State agencies in general care little about buck to doe ratios, only so much as they want to keep influential big money hunters happy do they attempt trophy or quality management techniques. Population densities and Carrying capacity are not determined by quality or trophy management standards but by what ever the local CTF prioritizes (farms, highways, neighborhoods, etc). It is not exact science trying to macro manage herds, many survey techniques and advanced algorithms are used to try to get an accurate estimate...again publish your own take numbers and we can see who has stronger data. The OP is about deer take which should be an easy enough stat to collect as it's an automated system I used 7 times just this year probably totaling 5 minutes...it helps if people cooperate and report their harvests. 18. Huh? Usually when someone refutes another's data or "facts" it's because of contradictory evidence (or atleast the perception of such evidence). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. Called 2 more within 30 yds in the past 20 minutes but they only offered marginal shots...I'm still hesitant from the first wounding. Half hour left before I take another hard look for halfwing...then back in the 7j blind tomorrow AM. I had great action all day, I just couldn't close. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. I don't think that turkey is as comfortable in that seat as you might have been. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. Congrats to everyone scoring gobblers! I've had an eventful but disappointing morning... About an hour after the crows started hollering I began lightly working my mad hatchet. 15 minutes later (6:45) there was a nice bearded lad 20 yds out my side window. I drew back waited for broadside aimed at the upper wing and released. Pop...bird flopped just into the woods and I was already on my way out of the blind and nocking another arrow. Got out of the blind and I could hear him trying to fly but flopping...but couldn't see him...never did again. Here's the crime scene: Bottom half of wing sliced off: Last sign 10 yds away...breast feathers: Broadhead was full of feathers but that's it, did not pass through, most likely did not even penetrate the chest cavity...almost no blood. Searched using concentric circles and game cam footage and found no new clues. Hands and knees, nothing. If he managed to fly I'd be impressed, but he still sure could run. If this was deer season I'd still be looking (and I'm gonna take another set of circles before I leave) but with a non-lethal shot I don't think there's anyway I'm catching up to that bird. At 9:15 I heard a gobble above my blind so I decided to head back and try again...I adjusted my hen and got back in the blind. Hit the mad hatchet about 3 lil purrs and bam another Tom 35 yds out the front window. I drew back but hesitated because it was at the end of my range out of this blind and I did not want to make a marginal shot and perhaps wound another bird. Another personal reminder that archery is not easy...and that shot placement is critical. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. Hearing lots of birds...but no turkeys. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  23. Heading out now...good luck everyone. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
