Seen at least 40 sets of track. They are literally everywhere today. Yesterday and the day before, nothing. Amazing! Well I'm doing a last minute stand move to a shooting lane where a dozen tracks crossed the trail, just like last year. This afternoon's gonna be the one. I can already taste the sausages, lol Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk

6 sets of fresh track. Gonna walk the long way around my upper 100 and do a little driving. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk

Dead quiet today. Few distant shots. Hoping for doe or buck to fill a tag. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk

I'm still hunting this am. Tired of sitting in my stand waiting. Too crunchy today. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk

Well I'm in the cabin for lunch. Covered a mile of deep woods with my son. Not a single deer track. At least a few dozen coyote track. Lots of snowshoe hare. Even bear. Where have the deer gone? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk

Winds almost all now. Thermometer up on the Ridge here reads 1 degree as I scouted. Cams all empty, no deer track, scrapes abandoned. A single shot a few miles off. I'm grunting, bleating, using a drag, wicks, and rattle bag up here. Everything within 1000 yds should think there's an orgy going on up here. C'mon fellas..ladies? Thanks for the advice, pep talk, and um, machete, lol. Funny thing is, the was plenty of track, scat, etc, couple of months back, which is why I selected these spots overlooking Creek, convergence of trails etc. Neighbors with success suggested whenever I walk, the crunching frozen ground, leaves, and pants rubbing against the thorn thickets scare deer way beyond the maximum 80yrd visibilty. I agree with your point, however, as last year's tags were filled when I "stumbled" onto doe groups in light rain. The only doe I saw this year, same thing. Likely I'll change to stand until cold, then a bit of still. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk

Had a look at field & stream's daily rut report and notice that new york continues to have much lower overall deer activity than elsewhere in the Northeast. Rut map still shows us on the forward edge of peak rut. I hope the wintry blast has made for a good weekend in store for us. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk

I've got 170 acres of forest in 5H which offers a variety of topo features including ridges, bogs, pine stands, creeks, etc. It sits in the middle of just under 1000 acres on the southern edge just outside the Park. I've been lost for hours trying to make out some familiar landmark to get me back to a trail. Last year, while scouting in a freshly fallen snow, I saw dozens of tracks in every corner, a bedding area, countless rubs, scrapes, trails, and spooked more doe than I can remember. I took a bear and doe the same morning. This year, only found 3 scrapes, few rubs, and 2 deer spotted all fall. Except for a couple small doe and a 4 pointer during summer, the cams have been empty, even over the food plot I planted this fall. Neighbors helped drive deer on 200 acres and through my 170. Nothing. Not even tracks on the paths or dirt road. Used drags, mock scrapes, bleats, grunts, you name it. Very discouraging sitting in a stand for 10 days without even new tracks coming by. These former hot spots from last year seem to be out like a teen fashion. Most folks here also note very little activity this year. So I start thinking. Have many of the deer moved on to other tracts? Are they still here but laying low or otherwise changed their behavior this year? Have I just been unlucky? Have I exercised poor judgement in placement of my 3 stands and 1 blind? As I drive past all the farms and fields, it leaves me to wonder, what does my deep woods offer deer? Compared to the edges of fields and farms, probably very little. Irony is, my parents have a place out on the north fork of Long Island where I spotted 24 deer standing in an empty field. Thousands of deer and the town doesn't know what to do with them all. Yes, my friends, hunting deep forest is certainly different.

Anyone north of Utica or Syracuse who can tell me how much snow fell? My camp is on the border of northern and southern zones, central Herkimer county, 2 miles into the forest. I'm itching to be up tomorrow, but won't go if I can't get in without a sled.

Never field dressed a bird before but after shooting a turkey in the backyard, I wondered how hard could it be? Used a pen knife and made a slit over the breast bone. Grabbed the skin and pulled it off like it was wearing a tight fitting sweater. Easy as can be. Dislocated both hips at the thigh and cut through. Cut out the breasts. You won't need youtube or any instruction if you have any idea of bird anatomy, even at the level of picking pieces out of a KFC bucket. Roasted the breasts for dinner. Used the other parts for soup. Yum!

My HeatMax handwarmers stay hot for around 6 hours then taper off. Not bad. My HeatMax toe warmers make zero difference. I put 2 in each shoe instead, both over and under toes. Maybe, just maybe a bit warmer. My score, HeatMax handwarmers 1, toe warmers, 0.

I've read the reviews on the CVA Optima and have seen many good things said. The scope on the combo, well, that didn't receive equal praise. I got black and stainless without a scope. Went out last year and dropped a black bear and doe the same day. Dead accurate even with the iron sights. I'm considering laying down $150 for a halfway decent scope for it. Love the gun though!

lol. As my father taught me, people are social creatures. That's why cars always pack up in groups. Seems they take a particular liking to you!

Amen! I've got nothing against driving slow, or fast, for that matter. But the left lane is designated as a passing lane. Pass quickly or slowly but do something. Some drivers immediately into the left lane and slow down to match the traffic pattern on the right. How I wish my car was equipped with a giant spatula to lift the slowpokes up and put them into the right lane where we're all supposed to be.. unless we're PASSING! whew..I'm feeling better now. Doc

Awesome placement! Great combo of features.
