Because I need the NY permit to purchase any additional pistols.

I am a retired NYPD Detective now living in Greene County. Under HR 218 I can carry concealed in every state. Yet when I applied for a concealed carry permit in Greene County I was told it could take up to 8 months. Curious isn't?

You have a lot of nerve jumping to that conclusion!!!!

Ruger M77 Hawkeye Laminate Compact

Do you have any problems with muzzle flash due to the short barrel? -
The Equalizer is the best. I have the EQ24 and love it. When climbing a tree the base is always thicker then the top so other stands are not level when you reach that point. With this you can level the stand buy simply turning a gear. See link: http://www.buckshot-stands.com/

I'm considering getting this rifle in 7mm-08 for next deer season. Anyone have any experience with this rifle?

Sorry if you took my post the wrong way - your suggestion was appreciated, just no where near where I hunt. Merry Christmas to all!!

Thanx for the education Steve but I did say northern 3A which is Greene County.

I just moved this past June into the northern part of 3A. I live a sort walk from state land and I spent numerous hours scouting before the bow season and could not find a place where I felt I had a good chance to score (very little sign). This is all old growth forest with no fields or openings and the acorn crop was bad this year. Well after spending the bow, rifle and late bow seasons in the woods I saw the same 4 deer numerous times; one doe with a young one and two one and a half year old does. I say to myself with these young deer there must be a buck somewhere. This winter I plan to go out when there is snow on the ground and look for bedding areas. Due to the lack of deer and deer sign I would normally give up on this area but since it is so convenient to my home I going to give it another shot next season.

What's the difference between a northern girl and a southern girl? A northern girl says you may - a southern girl says you all may. -
Hunt 3A in the Catskill Mountains where I live. There are more bear than deer.
-
I'm hunting 3A but north/east of Margaretville in the Hunter/Tannersville area, specifically in Haines Falls just outside of North/South Lake.

Thanx for the suggestions but where I hunt there are no swamps, saddles, funnels or right-a-ways. I hunt the south side of a mountain with a gradual up slope until the top were it gets steep. I guess I'm just going use a lot of boot leather until I figure this out.

I hunt the northern end of 3A and there is water everywhere.

I guess the are not any hunters that can help me solve my problem.

Hey neighbor Buckfever85. You sure got hit hard with Irene.

I'm new on this site but not to deer hunting. I'm 70 years young and have taken whitetail deer with rifle, bow and pistol but I have always hunted where I could discover food sources, bedding areas and figure out where to set up a stand. I just moved to the Catskill Mountains this past June and started scouting as soon as we settled in. My problem is I am hunting 3A where no doe permits are available telling me the deer are scarce. I hunt only State land where no logging is allowed so its all old growth forests, no fields and essentially no opening in the canopy. This year there are no acorns. I have only seen 3 does in the woods. When we had snow on the ground last week I waited 3 days with the intention of using the tracks in the snow to help me. I planned on following a run until it intersected another run and go from there. What I found was a few deer tracks that only went in one direction and did not cross any other tracks. I found this same condition numerous times. I never found a run that was consistently used, no bedding areas and no food sources. How the heck do you hunt these deer when they don't seem to have a pattern. I would guess even with acorns it would not be any easier because there are oak trees all over the woods. Any suggestions would be apprciated.

I'm a newbie also. I live in Haines Falls.

Hi All - I'm new to this site but not to hunting. I recently moved into the Catskill Mountains after retiring. I'm looking forward to fly fishing for trout and deer hunting.
