Hey guys i am going on a bear hunt at sterling state forest in orange county. I was wondering if anyone has ever been bear hunting there and if so weather or not they were successful! Any stories feel free to share them weather you have hunted bear successfully there or somewhere else. What should i expect? What are some good hunting tactics for hunting bear? Good access points at the park for bear? What type of stalk and hunt should i preform. How often should i stop and wait. Any info would greatly be appreciated! Thanks again for your time!

yea i didnt get a doe tag for sterling however stuart state forest i can use the doe tag. Gonna have to get a slug barrel for my mossberg 500 and a scope.

Yea i think your right the pine needles may be a better idea due to food source location. I got a wind tester so i will do everything i can to stay down wind. I have been writing down notes on everyones posts in a notebook which i will be taking with me. I feel the more info i learn about this amazing sport the better my chances of success are going to be! Hey guys i threw in my ten bucks and got a doe tag this year. It is in orange county and the only place i have hunted in orange county is at stuart and i damn near got my head shot off the last time i was there! Beautiful park though i still enjoyed it.

Thanks a lot guys! I sent away for my permit already and i am awaiting its arrival. Thanks for the info warren i will def consider west point later in the season but when i get my heart set on a spot i have to see it through. The idea of coming across a bear drives me crazy! I will put the permit on my dashboard and i will make sure to hike in a few miles in order to get deep enough in the park to avoid other hunters. I am in great shape from work and exercise so the hike sounds like a walk in the park ha haaa . No i have put together some decent gear including my old marine corps cammies. I was thinking of going to a local park near by and scooping up a bunch of a corns to put in a bin to store my clothes with. I got the idea of scent prevention using natural methods from another member on this site and i think its a great idea. I figure if i am going to mask my scent i might as well do it with something they might be attracted towards! I am so glad i joined this sight everyone has been so helpful. There is no way i would have gotten this kind of information on my own. I once knew a brotherhood in the USMC but there is def a brotherhood among hunters as well!

So basically you just pull right off the highway wherever you would like and walk right in?! interesting and i wont get my car ticketed? Do i have to check in if i already have the permit from mailing in the 5 bucks? Do i leave it on my dashboard incase the green giants come by? Or carry it on me? thanks a lot man im talking about rifle havent gotten into bow hunting yet unfortunately next year its on. What is opening day like during rifle season? Do i need to get there friday night just to sleep in my car to hunt sat morning? What is a good time to arrive? I was thinking of driving up friday night and just passing out untill 4 then heading out into the woods. Thanks for your time!

wow that sounds terrifying! This is my second year and i recently applied for the permit to hunt there opening day. What can i expect and what time should i arrive at the park opening day to get a spot? Do they assign you one? I have never hunted opening day on state land and i am a little spooked. I was at stuart last year with a crossbow and someone was doing a drive all i heard were tons of gun shots scared the shit out of me! Optimism up north BY STEVE PIATT EDITOR Posted on September 20, 2012 Elizabethtown, N.Y. — Northern Zone deer hunters, especially those hunting the big woods tracts for which the region is known, are always hoping for good tracking snow. And when the season ends, they’re hoping the heavy snows, notably in the Adirondacks, never arrive and the deer herd has an easy time of it during what is usually a harsh winter. Last season will be remembered for its unusually mild conditions, which carried over through the entire winter. That’s critical in the Northern Zone, where winter mortality is a bigger factor in deer numbers than even hunter harvest. It’s no surprise, then, that hunters and DEC biologists are optimistic heading into the 2012-13 season. “With the lack of major snow cover and very mild fall and early spring conditions, we anticipate excellent survival of fawns,” DEC Region 6 wildlife biologist Steve Heerkens said in his pre-season forecast. “That should correlate into a higher number of yearling deer in the woods this fall. Barring any unusually warm fall weather or early winter conditions, the outlook for the 2012 season looks excellent.” Biologists are expecting the mild winter to translate into more yearling bucks as well as a greater number of buck and doe fawns this season, since winter mortality was virtually nonexistent. “Last winter was one of the mildest on record in the Northern Zone units, with very little winter deer mortality, so buck takes should increase this year,” DEC Region 5 wildlife biologist Ed Reed said. Tim Blodgett, owner of Saratoga Tackle and Archery in Saratoga Springs, said hunters are optimistic heading into another deer season. “The deer had an easy go of it last winter, so there should be a lot of button bucks and yearling bucks,” he said. “It will just be up to the individual hunter to decide whether they want to take a young buck or hold out for something bigger.” The Northern Zone offers some farmland-type hunting on its fringes, but is noted more for the big woods, including the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks. Vast tracts of state-owned land house some big-bodied, heavy-racked bucks – but also have the sparsest deer numbers in the state. Buck harvests typically are below one per square mile each year in that area. “We’re seeing a lot of deer down here in the lowlands,” said Norm St. Pierre, owner of Norm’s Bait and Tackle in Crown Point (Essex County). “A lot of twin fawns. The mild winter helped a lot. It should be a good season. And we’re seeing a lot of bear, too.” Northern Zone hunters last year killed 26,814 whitetails, including 15,899 bucks. The regular firearms season accounted for 12,208 deer, while 7,621 were shot during the popular muzzleloader seasons (including a weeklong early offering before the firearms kickoff); 1,394 by bowhunters; 3,697 on DMP tags and 1,894 through the Deer Management Assistance Program, commonly known as nuisance permits. The total harvest last season was up only slightly from the 28,622 tally of 2012 – 12,053 during the regular season; 7,938 by muzzleloaders; 4,587 on DMPs; 2,249 on nuisance permits and 1,795 by bowhunters. DEC wildlife biologist Jeremy Hurst said the 2012 DMP allocation target is down by about 4.5 percent this season, primarily because no DMPs will be offered in WMU 6A as the state attempts to rebuild the herd. “Aside from unit 6A, in the other Northern Zone units with DMPs, compared to last year we intend to issue a few more DMPs in units 6G and 6K, about the same number in 6H, and slightly fewer DMPs in 6C,” Hurst said. The Northern Zone this season will see a pair of regulations changes, one of which will be more noticeable than the other in 2012-13. Hunters will be able to use DMPs – in units where those permits are available – in all deer seasons in the Northern Zone. DEC officials included the change as part of the department’s five-year deer management plan, noting that it will “simplify regulations and increase hunter opportunity and choice. No management impact is expected since DEC determines the total number of DMPs issued in each area of the state based on current deer population conditions and hunting activity.” In addition, the Northern Zone season dates have been altered, although because of the way the calendar falls this year it won’t be noticeable to hunters. The regular firearms season in the Northern Zone, which traditionally opened on the third Saturday in October, will now run for 44 days, beginning on the second Saturday after Columbus Day. “This is a slight change from the original proposal (in the five-year deer management plan) to begin the regular season on the fourth Saturday in October,” DEC officials said in announcing the change earlier this year. “Some hunters were concerned that the original proposal would extend the season too late into December. The adopted season structure results in fewer years when the regular season will extend later than it has in the past.” Hunters had voiced a concern that allowing the season to run too late in December could make whitetails vulnerable to overharvest in years when heavy snows sent them into their winter yards early and during the open season.

you should create a chat thread for hunters to group up and hunt together! Car pooling from long island to upstate can save a lot of money and create new friendships! Hunting is an age old tradition and the only way to pass down this wonderful sport is to teach it. I think it would be a great idea to start a forum designated to building hunting camps and squads for hunting trips!

wow i didnt even know that sterling was a shotgun only site. I am so glad i signed on to this chat forum bc that would have ruined my trip! I thought about west point that is def an option. However where else would you recommend for opening day? I would prefer to hunt with my 30/06 if possible. Thanks again guys and to newyorkhillbilly that sounds like a steelhead guided float trip i once took with the craziest guide i have ever met. He started drinking and my dad wound up socking him in the mouth and we had to walk for a few miles until we could call a cab lolol and Elmo was that picture taken at the brookhaven range!? strict place but the nicest officers and shooters i have ever met!

Sounds like another case of the tickle spiders.....yess this is a serious problem facing our youth today. Too many young men are being raised by tv and video games and in certain cases can develop a condition called pussyitis when it comes to being touched by girls. The rape call was an excuse to get away from the girls because he was nervous due to too many hours spent on Modern Warfare or battlefield 3 instead of on the phone trying to charm to panties off of sweet sally rotten crotch. Its a sad day in America when the tickle spiders attack. Someone needs to enlist him in the United States Marine Corp and after spending months away from hot chicks the boy will soon realize just how important the tickle spiders can truly be. Especially the first time they crawl into your pants!

But screw that crap my fellow hunters if they invade ny you can start to kiss your wild game goodbye. If you see em kill em! to guns&religioncop i have a mossber 500 with a bird and slug barrel. I also just purchased a weatherby vanguard series 2 30.06 rifle with a leapold vx2 at 3x9x40 scope i was looking at a 22 rifle that resembles the m-4 by s&w cool little rifle def gonna grab it when i got the money.

I ordered a topi map from the forest and i will try and post it in the future if i can that way you can make some pointers as to where i can venture. Might have to take a few trips up there to scout before hand. I will say a prayer for your son in law and let em know there's an 0311 grunt out there that thanks him for protecting his family. Here is a question for everyone about opening day! Last year i was not able to get up till late in rife season. If i am planing to hunt sterling state forest early sat morning and i live on long island just how crowded should i expect it to be!? I am wondering if i should just drive up friday night and sleep in my car so i am guaranteed my spot. I dont want to scout a spot and then loose it on hunting day! Is opening day like the lines i see outside apple stores when a new iphone comes out with hundreds of people waiting in a line to get in? Thanks for your time guys! Go GET SOME!!!

Thats some smart thinking why not marinate my hunting clothes in a sealed bin with natural scents locked in!!! BRILLIANT! So many products you can buy i don't really believe in anyhow 4 Should have bit the bullet and waded through the marsh 5 Very interesting and i would def be interested in getting a hunt in. Putnam county is where my grandfather lives so i got a place to crash!! 6 I only watch the tv shows to get me exited for work in the morning! Hunting ambitions always make a hard day of work easier! 7 My best friend owns Rocky Shore Brewing and his surplus is in the hundreds of fresh custom cold beers! Let me know!

Hahaa yea guns&religioncop i took it to the range after i finally got the scope in and put 50 rounds at 180 grain and whoooweee! My shoulder hurt for about three days after however i met some really cool fellow vets and i have to say the experience was outstanding! A lot of really nice guys who were all willing to help me out. The rifle was extremely accurate after sighting it in. Anyone ever wanna go shooting let me know!
