  1. All I'm saying is I haven't had a problem seeing nor killing deer. There obviously has to be an issue if you aren't seeing them on your property. I don't know how many acres you have to hunt on, but unless you let other people come on and shoot all your deer, you really have no excuse other than poor tactics. I say if you have been seeing deer for the acclaimed 70 years, then you did something different this year to push the deer out, or you just don't know where to find them. I had trail cams set out too, didn't see hardly anything on them. Didn't see one of the multiple bucks I saw on our farm until I got in the woods and patterned the deer. (Poor camera placement) It wasn't until gun season that I actually closed in on and killed the buck I had patterned. All from seeing him with my actual eyes, finding his sign and figuring out what he was doing. I'm no expert hunter, but I am learning and I put in some good work this year with time in the woods. Maybe those old trustworthy, guaranteed stands aren't producing like they used to. Maybe they aren't feeding/bedding in the same areas. Tough telling. We scout later summer and stay out of the woods until the season opens. We use climbers. hunt a bunch of different areas. Go in, set up and hunt, get the hell out. No messing around. Scout on the way in and way out. Once the season is over, we don't enter those woods again until the following summer. It works.

You cant say its just hunting tactics..I hunt state land Tonawanda WMA, a highly pressured area from August (dog field trails),Duck & goose hunting, pheasant hunters (which there were extremely high numbers of guys with dogs),small game hunters and then us deer guys. Its a different kind of hunting compared to private and even S. tier WMA's.    If people are having the same results for years and then there are no deer sightings you cant just say tactics. I have seen 3-doe during the entire gun season -300 yards away,  thats it.  I get out more than just the weekends. I am normally a sitter and at seasons end did walk and stalk without seeing a single thing.Very little as far as sign goes (rubs ,scrapes) but there are some trails being used.  My take on this......Very hard winter on the herd. I found one buck skull-4pt, and had another guy walk out with 5, and said there were doe skulls there also. Deer numbers are down and the guys that are getting deer are doing so on private land because of less pressure. DEC is doing a terrible job on the management end, and when asked the told me there were no issues as far as winter kill. When I go into the woods at seasons end and find acorns still on the ground there is an issue. Weather has been the game changer as most deer movement has been during the night. Even road kill numbers have been down as I have only seen 3 roadkills in that area the entire season. Usually there are 3 every other day. This weekend went out to southern Tier and had no deer siting but sign was a bit more prevalent.  No road kills on a 2 hour road trip in the heart of deer country?

  2. So far looks like I will be eating tag soup.Other then 1 road kill I have yet to shoot a deer this season/I have seen many just not within range or clear shot.

Can you share the recipe?? LOL Same boat as you brother!!

  3. 8G Tonawanda wma  only 3 shots that were close and maybe 10 shots within 1,5 miles. Gun season to date ive seen ONE doe at 600yards. I ran into 2 guys coming out of the woods saturday that came out with 5 buck skulls.(winter kill)They found the place were deer go to die. 8, 6, & 4 point other 2 had antlers gone one was small the other was a big old boy that had bases bigger than a half dollar. They said there were some doe remains there also and one fresh gut shot doe. Explains the 3 shots on the opener, rifle guys. If you can take shots at deer at 300 + yards then walk the 300 yards to see if you hit the thing. I also found a 4 point skull during archery season.  I have hunted hard and this will be the worse season on record for me. What does the DEC really do ???

  4. So first light is what, 30 minutes before sunrise?  And you are going in two hours before legal shooting time, sometimes earlier?

    And you pattern other hunters?

You are super human.................................You MUST have a wall full of trophy deer hunting like THAT!

I hunt stateland and Im in 2 hours before legal shooting time to get my spot on opening day.  If I was fortunate to have my own land it may be a different story, but you do what works. I also pattern hunters and find the deer (as well as ducks / geese) have us patterned.  Hunted one section of public land (thanksgiving morning) and had seen 17 hunters in the am. Most guys leave by or before  10:00am.   At 10:45 deer were moving and seen eight in the next 1.5 hours.  You do what works for you. Even the best plans can be screwed up on stateland. LOL

  5. Thanks Mike, lotteries are all closed as I was not selected  at Iroquois or tonawanda / oak orchard. I have always hunted Tonawanda but never the other 2, Just looking for some other Stateland /wma optionsfor the opener to scout out. I do put my time in scouting ect, unfortunately it was all in one area. LOL This is only my 4th season duck hunting hence the question of other options. Thanks again!

  6. Hi everyone!

Did not get picked for the lottery at Tonawanda WMA/ oak orchard for the opener. Does anyone know of other areas to hunt ducks for opening day?   Only been doing this for a couple of years so I dont have a backup plan in place. Thanks for your help.

  7. Ok I'm bored today...

Purely preposterous but suppose I was just granted the power to set new NY deer season dates and change a few regulations (all noted below). To be able to quickly see if most people like my changes or not, please respond with either a simple YES or NO. Clearly there may be some you like and some you don't but suppose you have to say YES or NO to below compared to what it is currently. (Perhaps on a different thread someone can debate or elaborate on their reason for their vote). So here it goes:

    1) Oct 1st bow opener.

    2) One buck per season, no matter the weapon.

    3) Youth two day gun season starting the Sat/Sun prior to Oct 15th (one buck or one doe)

    4) 1st gun season for 10 days starting the Saturday before Thanksgiving

    5) A week and half off of gun season

    6) One week second gun season

    7) One week of ML season immediately following second gun season

    8) Three shot capacity (plug) in gun for riffle or shot gun (similar to Ohio's slug gun)

    YES or NO?

    NO

  8. Well how was your wqaterfowl opener?

Hunted the Tonawanda WMA and it was the worse opener ever for myself and seven others that hunted our area on Saturday. I had 4 mallards come in and land 15 minutes before legal shooting time, so I thought it may be good day, even though the weather was miserable. Only seen 1 mallard all morning. Geese were flying high. The other group of hunters that were at the boat take out area also complained at not see much at all. General consensus was the worst opener we all have ever experienced.

  9. Is it really a lul or change in pattern. We scout all summer and in fall things are changing fast. Acorns start to drop. The deer that had cornfields to bed in, do  not when the corn is cut . All that change along with bulking up for the winter and getting a hot doe changes the whole pattern we thought we had. Hunting season starts at a time when deer start to get into survival mode. So what we perceive as a LUL is a change in the pattern we saw all summer when food and browes was plentiful.

  10. As I watched a show today, I was just thinking......"if you really want to be a hunter go hunt stateland! Now thats a challenge." I like the shows dont get me wrong, but when they show 15- 20 a deer a day, thats not the reality I live in. LOL I also tried to mentor and take 2- kids (17 & 20 year old) out with me hunting as they showed some interest.

Neither one can make a commitment to scout with me or get out of bed early......Oh Well !!!

  11. Just wanted to give you guys a heads up in case you didn't know already. Was out and about today and stopped by the Iroquois Wildlife refuge and they had signs up that it is closed due to the budget issue. All look outs and the entire area closed. Not sure how long this budget crap will last but with duck season approaching you may want to give some thought on alternate areas to hunt. That means any other federal preserve or land you hunt cannot be accessed.

I was also told they are trying to close any access to stateland that has any federal money attached to it.

We are kind of like the peasents and the King says no more hunting on my land.......Land of the free???

    This is really getting scary!
