  1. My opinion for seeing less deer is:

Definitely a lot of poaching. I bow hunted my property 4 weekends in a row and heard many shots at sunset every time.

Also I found the rut to be early this year

I also think the youth weekend makes a big difference. The bucks on my trail cameras were pretty much nocturnal after that. The kids should be allowed to hunt during the regular seasons just like I grew up.

You think there is more poaching this year? Across the board I have seen people say there was low hunter turnout, but you think there were more poachers out this year? I consider that extremely unlikely.

  2. do you think deer eat more now compared to summer to store fat or it's typically colder and need more food for energy to keep warm ?

I think that the deer (squirrel, bear, turkey) brain perceives a temperature shift through the hypothalamus of the brain, just like you would if you slept outside. I think this temperature shift triggers the shift into hyperphagia. In my area, this temperature shift hasn't occurred and game animals haven't shifted in hyperphagia.

  3. agree. Food creates energy. Energy keeps deer warm in cold temps. No need for them to be walking around during the day to go eat with as warm as its been. Most activity I had was coldest day we had. 22 degrees

I thought animals eat to get fat for the coming winter. Unless they know something about the next few months that we don't, they're putting on just as much weight.  Any self-interested, healthy animal will put on weight, whether it's 60 or 30 degrees out because no one knows what's coming.

  4. Let's not discount basic deer behavior. While compared to humans they are for the most part 'unthinking' creatures, they are extremely aware of their surroundings and extremely adaptable to any changes. They walk around trying to stay alive all day every day and they're pretty good at it. We walk around in their area a few times a year to amuse ourselves and pursue our hobby. More often than not they win this game. I'm not convinced it's an issue of population.

Deer spend their whole day thinking, unlike a lot of people I know. Every deer I haven't seen this year was smarter than me on that day. Maybe next time...

  5. Poaching should be included in that list also ,I was at Farmers Mkt in Edmonston last week to pick some venison up and a Leo was there dropping off some deer that were poached the night before. Eavesdropped on conversation and local amish were caught with 24 deer in one barn and not far away another amish was found to be in posession of 14 deer. Add to that a local lowlife was heard bragging that he shot 27 deer last season . Even if the totals of these deer were cut in half that is still too many , add to that those that don't get caught and it just might tip the scale into the less deer side.

NOTE THAT THIS IS SECOND HAND INFO WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT BE COMPLETELY ACCURATE  !!

This is third and fourth hand info, which is never accurate. Besides that, Poachers have always been and always will be a problem. Even if poachers were included on CharlieNY's list, they would be the only factor that HASN"T changed.

  6. That is some great hunting, I have two questions...

    1) "The throat isn't eroded any, but the bore is only fair. I shot some bullets through it with fire lapping compound last year to shine up the bore a bit & had the muzzle done with a recessed flat crown." What does this mean?

    2) " 3.150"(COAL) will still function in the Krag magazine & should still get me close to the lands with the slightly pointier ogive compared to the 30395." What does this mean? What is the lands?

  7. Too bad I'm a woman hunter and a good one..please get over it already...

I do  not know you ...nor you I...but I do want you to take note on the names that liked your post

They are better trained than my dogs...and I have very well trained dogs...they stay 3 steps behind all of my posts just waiting for some thing, anything negative to say.   as I once discribed it ....like giddy high school boys picking on an under classman.

Now I post on the internet as a causual thing...I will not punctuate ...the (....) were just a style I picked up...now it's just a FU to some rather pompus individuals. I find it amusing some can look at a single dot(period) and pause. Yet find it impossible to pause and take a breath for several. Then complain my posts run.  Heres is the other thing...I have many thoughts going through my head at any given time and I tend to type like I speak..

I multi task..... so I usually have several different things going on at once and do not use spell check..,I try to catch them....but don't always..... when using the Kindle...... that auto correct is a monster....I am some what dyslexic...But I also have aphasia...so letters and even sentences can become backwards...or I think on thing and type something similar but different..is what it is.... if I'm tired it is more noticable. Plus I'm a lousy typist.

Now all that said and really no concern of yours actually.....I do not require ppl. to read my posts...You, other than as a joke ....will not see me correcting others posts...for I can not walk in their shoes and I only care about the substance...All the rest ...Well I am intelligent enough to decipher most ppls posts...I have no desire to run around checking others for their mistakes...for I do not walk in their shoes and have no idea what may cause anyone to make errors.

Now to conclude...... please take note as to how many mistakes are in others posts...and how often you see those particular guys going after said ppl.....There has always been a price to pay to some...when you are a woman and a darn good hunter...A guy thing I suppose

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT??? Your writing is a giant stream-of-conscious with no coherent order. Are you saying that you do not know how to write because you're a woman?

  8. Your posts are very difficult to read.  It's so hard to figure out what story you are trying to tell with these run-on paragraphs and bootleg punctuation. I don't know why but I always read through a couple times...maybe I've learned my lesson.

  9. Maybe get the adjoining hunting club to help out so that you are both absolutely on the same page as to where the boundries are... maybe share the surveying cost.. worth a shot before going at it alone. Might be a better idea than just surprising them with a gangland of new posted signs. Just a thought.

    That's some good advice.

  10. Could be an injury to the pedicle itself which would carry that difference throughout his life. If its a body injury that heals it will most likely correct itself next year. It is possible however that its just a genetic trait in his bloodline

I was leaning away from this cause because both of his sides looked normal. They were just so mis-matched.
