Quick recap: Deer was taken at night with a spotlight on a nuisance tag at west Hampton airport. The deer is from Suffolk county, Long Island. and not from Ohio. The deer was also brought to Long Island Outdoorsman the day after which is where it was measured. Huge deer but I don't think a record can be given when the permit is a nuisance. All I can say is, it's such a shame for that deer to be killed that way. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

this is the 18pt taken from west Hampton with a nuisance permit. Unofficial score of 237 3/8. I'm having trouble loading the picture, let me know if it posts. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

The best way to sum it up is that kids these days are soft. Weak, spoiled. Etc. Kids don't go hunting now a days, like they did before. I agree it mis represents hunting to kids but I think it's to get them interested. I'm a sicko like the rest of you. I like sitting in a tree for 8 hours freezing my butt off and see nothing. Not many kids these days find that "cool". Which I don't care because I like what I like. But the yuppies try to take over. I'd love to convert some yuppie kid into an outdoorsman/hunter any day of the week. I love hunting so much that I love sharing the sport,I think everyone should hunt. It cleanses the soul. One thing I can guarantee...no matter where you go there will ALWAYS be someone who bends or breaks the rules. For As long as we have been honest in our hunts, others have "cheated" just as long. I think when you listed "barrage of gun fire" immediately after "lead to illegal stuff" it confused some. No worries. Sorry about your area filled with morons that disrespect the sport. Some people think it's about filling a tag or putting a head in the old man cave. You know what hunting truly is, so do I, and so do most of the people on this site. But if I may, with the firework maker next door and campgrounds with all that stuff, don't you think the deer have grown accustomed to it by now? Maybe it does affect them, but I couldn't imagine it running deer out of its core area, especially if it's a routine thing. Keep in mind the feeling you will get when you fill your tag....that's what you gotta use when others actions cause frustration. Each deer is a trophy, from button buck to giant. Good luck everyone. Doc, I was not trying to take away from the "deer camp" experience. That's 100% part of hunting. However, the state could give a darn about a kid enjoying deer camp. It is solely up to the person teaching and bringing the young hunter into the "game" to handle that. I'm not trying to be an advocate for the state, I'm just stating my thought on this. To touch on a few things mentioned by others on this thread I start with the the season. I do not feel the deer season should be shortened. Period. Bow or rifle, to take away a single day is 10x too many days. The youth rifle hunt, I still don't see the big deal...if you had a youth hunter, shoot a buck 100yds from you while you were waiting with your bow I can understand being opposed, but when only 5,000 kids are involved state wide, only on the 2nd weekend of Bow season in a "special season" I can't see how it poses a problem to anyone. Do you not feel safe? I feel more vulnerable to some dick poacher slingin shots from a truck, than a kid who is going to be with a licensed hunter. It's not like you are not allowed to hunt this weekend. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

Yes that's the green score I've been told so far. It's 27" bigger than the Giarraputo buck. Which is insane. I'm trying to get more info. Unfortunately this is still all word of mouth Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

More news updating the buck taken yesterday. The buck scored 237 3/8 but was taken with a spotlight. Not sure if it was on a nuisance permit or what. Kind of depressing. I will continue to post more info. Buck has 6 brow tines, 2 drops and kickers. Going on info via text from my buddy. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

Just heard a possible state record buck was taken in Suffolk county yesterday. 14inch G1'S and G2's. 18pts total. Anyone hear or see anything? If I get any info I'll post. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

If say the same. Could be 3.5 but I'd say no more than 100" Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

Youths are given this "extra weekend" to hopefully raise the success level in young hunters. As sad as it makes me to say, hunting in NY is a dying sport and we need as much help as possible trying to get more people involved. I don't think it will have an effect on any bow hunter, and if it does, who cares. It's 1 weekend and it's for the good of all hunting and hunters. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

My father was a smoker and always smoked in stand. Not like a pack a sit but cigs were smoked in stand. Never had a deer spook from it. Seen plenty of deer with a cig lit too. I chew, never had a problem, I always spot in a bottle. My friend uses the E-cig. Had deer all over him last year, I think when the smoke touches your camo is when the smell sets and deer can detect. Spray scent eliminator after and should be ok. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

I think the trapping will def help in controlling the yotes. Sounds like a good plan to start managing your area and trying to revamp the herd. One thing to keep in mind, a deer's home range can be somewhat large in relation to your land. In my experience, they tend to have different spots throughout the year that they frequent depending on time of season/weather/food availability/pressure. With that said, the deer you may be seeing during the season may disappear to these spots at any point. Don't automatically think the deer are gone or coyotes are to blame right away. Your best bet is to find these spots at the end of this season and monitor them in the off season. This should help locate some of those bucks that went nocturnal and also give you a basic startup plan for how to get to them early next year. It should also help in trying to get ratio numbers. Good luck Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

If anyone thinks coyotes do not have an impact on deer they are only kidding themselves. They are a smart predator and although most think they stick to smaller prey, they in fact go after deer whenever they can. Last year my buddy took one out chasing 2 doe past his stand during opening week. The following week coyote tracks were all over my property and our deer sign was minimal at best. The coyotes moved out and the deer came back week 3. Now that the pelt is not required to be sealed, I hope more hunters take out coyotes when given a chance. I have witnessed 2 coyotes chasing a deer out of the woodbine and across a field. They worked him a few hundred yards to a corner of a field where, 4 other coyotes were waiting. These yotes drove the deer right into the mouths of the pack. It was incredible to watch. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

10-15 years ago by my property we were having low deer numbers being seen. we decided to not take a doe for 2 years at my camp...we also talked with other clubs/landowners/hunters in the area and in an effort to help the deer, we all said no one take a doe... after the 2 years, the ammount of deer seen was amazing, it was as if the herd came back... Since then, we have had excellent deer seasons, resulting in bucks and does taken as well as overall great sign and sightings of deer every day. This is in 4p Delaware county... I would never tell someone what to shoot. Everyone has different goals.if you shoot a small fawn or yearling deer, you are taking a chance taking out a buck for the following year. Be selective... If you are going to take a doe, i'd try to take the biggest most mature of the doe... The younger ones (fawns) will be fine, (survive)... if you do decide to take a smaller doe, that deer will not make or break your area... It has to be on the collective as a whole for your area.. you are doing it right..food plots for the deer... during the rut, the does will be looking for food. If they go into heat and a buck is nearby, he will be chasing them around... keep 2 other things in mind..... Predators may be a huge factor in your area...They have chased deer off my property before and not until we handled the coyotes did we see the deer come back... the other thing is that for as many deer you have seen, there are probably twice the ammount of deer you havent seen in your area... i hope i was some sort of help....good luck and shoot straight
