I was a staunch believer in Charlie. Still am and he has the best show on the TV out there. But that being sad the last 2 years I have exclusively hunted bow on the hottest weekend he predicted SKUNKED. This year im going back to my old standby of November 7,8,9,10,11 If the weekend falls on these days im going and 2013 is looking perfect. Still gonna watch Charlie and learn but im going back to my old lucky days where I have always seen the best buck activity. (Now I know everything is relevant to where you hunt. His predictions may have been spot on and the hot do could have been across the street in my neighbors property but I have to try my lucky weekend again.)

Just saw this on QDMA's facebook page. Apparently someone found this chair 18 feet up in this tree chained to it. Guess it has been there for a few years with the growth around it.

watching a show on now on Nature. called private life of deer in Cayuga heights in ithaca new york. great show

Definitely chomping at the bit for number #2 and a long beard. Needed one under my belt first. But as great as it was on Saturday didn't hear but one bird on Sunday. Horrible conditions sat and called nothing, run and gun and called nothing.

Well, I finally did it. Went up to my place in Chenango County with my brother. On Saturday the 4th set up on a little clover field we have on the property and the birds were going crazy! Had one bird about 150 yards away to our right, I believe roosted in some hemlocks near another little clover field, that must have gobbled 30 times on his own. Heard birds all around us and then another single gobble close to our left near some other pines. I tried calling after daylight but did not get any real response to my calling so I waited. Then about 6 am a crow sounded off and I heard a gobble nearby. A few minutes later the crow sounded off again and the bird shock gobbled a second time and he was getting closer. I then made a few clucks with my old knight and hale mouth call waited then followed up with another series a few minutes later then they came sneaking in. 3 jakes came up to the plot. I wanted my brother to get a shot (even though I have never taken a turkey in my life) because he just got back into hunting after taking a 2 year layoff due to an accident and work issues. Problem was my brother was to my left and the birds came from my right. I waited as log as I could (seems like it was 10 minutes but probably only 10 seconds HA) and then took my shot because the birds were acting a little squirrely when looking at my hen decoy. One shot with the Mossberg 835 (old school gun at least 12 years old in mossy oak shadow branch camo pattern) with Pure gold choke shooting Winchester 3 1/2 inch shells put him right down with only a little wing beat thereafter. Finally, I have been hunting these birds hard, practice, watch every video, have every possible turkey implement in my vest and it finally happened. Even though it was only a jake it was still a great experience because of how it all unfolded and my brother with a front row seat. And the fried turkey fingers that followed were the icing on the cake.

Ive been shooting a recurve for 5 years now. Great advice set forth above. I would say to start out get an average bow to know the poundage u should use while hunting. I started out with a pse impala takedown. Used it and shot it for a year and then bought a martin x200. Love it. I know there are better bows but i cant imagine shooting nything better. I would say buy a cheapy in a 45 pound at 28 inch range and shoot shoot shoot shoot. Then when you get good and confident buy a nicer bow that you like for hunting. I didnt want to spend $ on a bow that was too heVy or too light so thats why i went cheap first.

Are you FOR or AGAINST a change?
agross replied to nybuckboy's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Oh forgot to add this. It all comes down to people being crazy and that isthe proplem. Read this link that a friend sent me today about a story of a man walking onto a bus in Chicago and smacking a woman passenger in the side of her head with a sock filled with human feces.....NO JOKE. people are crazy. Do we ban tube socks? http://m.nbcchicago.com/nbcchicago/pm_107759/contentdetail.htm?contentguid=9v1QSieM -

NO changes. This guy and the batman movie theater guy are like serial killers. They are going to fly under the radar and its going to happen again no doubt. Also, new gun laws will have the honest people abiding but the bad guys wont. Also, you have to consider about the mental illness isue. There are probably dozens of categories of mental illness in the DSM books. What happens if a doctor writes on a pad that you have depression or anxiety once in your life. Does that mean you cant own a gun again? A lot of issues to consider. You have to remember and consider the number of people in this country, the number of gun owners and compare them to the total number of events that occur. Geeze i think nearly as many people die per year in medical malpractice and dwi accidents. -
Just a little venting...
agross replied to Sogaard's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
The problem that you always face when "giving" a little of your gun rights up is that it turns into a slippery slope that eventually leads to further bans...This maniac in Conn used an AR and now that is the flavor of the week so to speak to ban because it is hard to stick up for your gun rights when faced with 20 little kids deaths. BUT remember the Virgina Tech shooting involved 1 guy and two handguns. Ban AR can turn into ban anything with that carries over 5 shots or is semi automatic. Its like banning or making alcohol illegal because of the amount of dwi's deaths and arrests yearly. Also the examples of inner city shootings or crime shootings wont be affect because those guys dont care about the law to begin with. Its an ugly fact of life that things happen. He was a nut who had access to a gun. Its like when everyone starts talking of keeping old people from driving when a story pops up on the news that they ran over a crowd of people because they forget to put their car in drive instead of reverse. I heard today(i know it was just news channels stretching the issue for ratings) on a news talk show that people should "look into violent video games" and "look into the violence of movies" and they started to b*#ch about Quentin Taratino and his new movie Django thats coming out. Just saying these once upon a time whackos that make a big splash in the news shouldnt mean that everyone else's life should change. Look at the statistics on the number of AR rifles sold in this Country in the last 10 years and compare to the number of shootings that occurred. -

I am looking to thicken up a few places on my property this spring to add additional security areas so the deer feel safer and also to make my food plots feel more secure. Was wondering if anyone had the name of a nursery etc that sells shrub tye plants such as red osier dog wood, black berry etc shrubs that provide cover and some food. Thanks

If he was a contractor where was the nail gun. LOL. Those are teh same type of monsters u get on long island. A few of my friends hunt the hamptons and video their hunts. Kind of odd to me (even though the shoot very nice bucks) when you sitting in a treestand 20 yards from some guys driveway and 30 yards from the kids swingset. Definitely a different kind of hunting. I will take the big woods upstate and a 4 plus hour drive anyday. ITs more of the experience than the kill for me.

I saw one of those tank tread type wheel chairs on an episode of Tred barta. He was bear hunting with Hounds and it did not look that great. Obviously the terrain was a real challenge but it seemed to have problems going up any sort of incline anywhere close to 30 degrees. I did see him use it in Texas where he was hog hunting and it seemed to fair much better. I dont know about the sound that may come from that thing but nothing was noticeable on TV.

Yeah, im going up to Afton area. Weather looks perfect, clear and cold, no real wind perfect weather. But then again those bad weather years (too warm, raining, ice storm, windy) always make an easy excuse when you see gotz.

I was wondering everyones take on this storm and how it is going ot affect this week and next weekend. I hoping (and feel free to correct if im wrong) that the next week monday, tuesday, and wednesday and part of thursday will all be a washout with high winds and heavy rain (washout for both deer rut chasing and people). Then what i hoping is that after it all calms down thursday the next weekend if going to be phenominal rut activity as the bucks are gonna be shut down for days because does will be hiding. Then the storm clears and the temps look to be in the upper 40's which is below average for my area 7P for friday saturday and sunday. Keeping my fingers crossed. What do you think? And please let me know if you have any better weather information as i live on Long Island and i am only getting the forecast for down here. Internet does give you as much detail for Chenango County.

Im not jumping in on either side of the argument. I have walked in an hour before dark (because of how far i had to walk and how i learned grwing up hunting) both gun and bow. I will admit i never did anything to my bow but with gun i usually never loaded my gu just because felt safer walking in the dark with an uloaded firearm. I think it is ridiculous also. However on the legal side of it the assumption can easily be made that you are hunting after legal shooting hours which would be enough for a summons. I also persoanlly know guys that were ticketed on long island as they were walking out of the woods at dark and the DEC was waiting at their car saying "its past hunting time what are you doing in the woods with a weapon" How many of us have been in the woods during gun season and have heard gun shots going off when it is barely light enough to see. Did someone shoot one or did their gun accidentally go off? Every year i hear more than a dozen shots where i gun hunt (Town of afton in Chenango County) Take all that into consideration and then think why a DEC officer would have enough to write you a summons. Whether he is right or wrong or just an over zealous DEC officer you will still have to go to Court and defend yourself and a lot of times you will be considered guilty before innocent and that is from experience.
-
Great news because i just bought two for the trail cams yesterday.

The dec regs say "hunting hours" from sunrise to sunset. If you think that if you get caught in the woods before or after this time with a loaded firearm that you would not considered to be hunting and not get ticketed your crazy. Just take the same scenario and apply it to any other situation (time of day irrelevant) if you are sitting next to a house that you dont have permission to hunt near with a loaded firearm in blaze camo with deer scents and a grut tube you are considered hunting. If you are a field with a firearm during the open deer season you are considered hunting. Do you really think that you can claim that if you used the excuse "i am hunting coyotes" with a shotgun and buckshot that a dec officer can not ticket you your crazy. You think that same excuse would fly if you legally tagged out on deer and were then with a hunting party claiming "im waiting for the deer drive to push out a coyote" will work good luck. Im sure that the DEC dont want to bust Ba@#$ but if your in the woods with a weapon what else are you doing there? You are not bird watching. Also, regardless of probable cause or prima facie you are gonna get a ticket and then have to argue your way out of it. Granted most DEC officers wont harass you because they have bigger fish to fry as in spot lighting deer jackers, baiters, etc which i am sure is very prevalent during the firearms season. Its just a matter of luck of the draw. Chances are you are never gonna see a DEC officer while hunting. In my 25 years of hunting i have only encountered 1 DEC officer while in the woods and that was just prior to the deer season on state land shooting red squirrels. We were sooting at one and he came up very polite and asked if we werre licensed, we all turned our backs on him and showed ou tags and then he asked "dont you think that is a lot of lead for a little fur?" and we said no and kept shooting. No problems and he was on his way.

They can be a pain thats for sure. Mine starts going off at 7:30am from eveyone not in the woods with me. What you see? Get anything yet? I like to leave it on silent and then check every hour or so.

I wouldnt worry about a grey fox scaring off the deer. I had trail cam pics from the spring of a few does chasing a pair of greys out of a food plot. The deer are always in it for the clover and i guess the fox are there for the bugs, mice, chipmonks.
