I'm Army, but I thought I'd chime in. I am usually a real stickler for proper representation of our uniforms. It honestly pisses me off when I see kids walking around with rank or insignia. Surprisingly, it doesnt seem to offend me if I see people walk around with BDU's (or whatever they are called now). Maybe that's a double standard, but the BDU's are a utility camo that is in pretty widespread use with civilians. Too many people use them regularly for me to even be able to get upset about it. Rank and/or insignia is another matter. Don't even get me started on kids wearing dog tags.... Joshua

2014 GRST Sportsmen For Heros program
Fehyd643 replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Greater Rochester Southern Tier QDMA
This is my first time seeing this program, and I must applaud this group/effort. As a medically retired veteran, I can say that things like hunting/fishing are completely overlooked by the various "veteran friendly" groups out there. It is REALLY nice to see something like this. I am getting a new bass boat next spring, and would very much like to be a part of this if I could. My disability does not prevent me from hunting or fishing, and I would really love to help those in a different situation than mine. I hunt private land (not owned by me), so I can't help there, but I would love to offer the use of my boat and/or myself for this project. My current boat is not registered for the year, or I would offer that as well. Please let me know how I can be of assistance with this. Joshua -
Does anyone have any experience they would like to share regarding Lake Shore Marshes or Galen? (Bow and Gun) I live in Newark, and I have a normal spot that I hunt in Genesee County (2 hours from me). I am looking for some place to hunt just a few hours in the mornings/evenings with my son on days I don't make the trip out to my normal area. Either of the above places are within 20 minutes from me, and are perfect for a 3-4 hour early morning or evening hunt. It's his first year, and I just want him to get out and experience it. Never done public land though, so I have no idea what to expect. Any info would be great, thanks!

I just recently purchased a Mathews Mission Craze for much the same reasons as listed above. Great bow for the price and VERY adjustable. I absolutely love it. Yeah, it's listed as a youth bow, and no, I don't care. The only drawback I researched before I purchased it is that a beginner bow with a short length is less forgiving, so be careful of that. I havent found it to be a problem yet, but I've only put maybe a hundred shots through it.

Pro Shop near Rochester-First Bow-need help
Fehyd643 replied to Dr Ignominious Death's topic in Bow Hunting
I live in Newark and work in Henrietta. I went to Heritage first, and was really not happy with the results. As a first time bow buyer I had a lot of basic questions, but the gentleman behind the counter just acted like he didn't have time for me. (There was no one else in the shop at the time) Maybe it was just an off-day for him, but he was not helpful at all. It was an awkward conversation and I felt like I needed to have walked in with either a lot of experience or a lot of money. I went to Traditions the next week and spent about an hour getting help and advice. I bought a Mission from them and they took the time to help me get all set up. The owner then spent a half hour with me on their range helping me work on my form and sighting in. The place was pretty busy, but he still took the time and basically gave me 100% of his attention. Not sure why they have a bad rep here, but I would go back to Traditions in a heartbeat. -
It was a serious issue to be sure. I should have mentioned that it was about 10 minutes of "Holy Crap" "That's so sad" "Don't cry honey" before I reverted to levity. I'm not that insensitive, I just didn't want this horrific incident to spoil the whole trip.

So my family spent the weekend camping and hiking at Letchworth, and I witnessed one of the most disturbing things I have ever seen. We were walking up trail #1 (Gorge trail) and were right about midway between the lower and middle falls. To those that may not be familiar, let me describe it. The gorge itself is hundreds of feet down, and it is a virtual cliff at the point we were at. At best, maybe a 80 degree slope in some spots and 90 degree or even inverted slop in others. Between the trail and the gorge is about a 2 foot high stone wall. Anyway, we were just strolling along. My kids were maybe 40 yds ahead of my wife and I. We here some loud noises coming from the woods next to us. We stop and see a fawn just out of spots come racing right at us at full speed. About 10 yds from us, it vears right and splits the distance from us and our kids. At a full sprint, it leaps over the wall and into the gorge!!! We stand there stunned as we see it crash through the treetops and out of sight. Holy Crap! That image will be burned into my mind for as long as I live. Of course, being a smartass, I made the kids look around for a few minutes for a note, but alas, none could be found. My wife, in complete shock, asks "What was it thinking?" My 15 yr old son, without missing a beat and a straight face replies, " Probably something like 'AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH'" ...I love my kids

I live in Wayne county, but hunt in Genesee. I've been all over the net but can't seem to find out anything. Is there anything at all in the works to allow rifle hunting in Genesee anytime soon? Any insight would be great, thanks. Joshua

I also grew up in Naples, but went the other direction. During my time there (the 80's, early 90's) there were always a lot of issues that went along with the derby. A few of my friends and I would walk the creek and take bets on how many fist fights we would see. It took a long time for me to have ANY interest in trout fishing because of my experience then. lol, I remember sitting outside of Sutton Spoons as a kid and asking my dad why all the fishermen had bloody noses. I can't wait to go out on the 1st, but there is no way you could get me to Naples! Any other day or week or month, it's one of the best spots ever for fishing, memories and scenery. I just wouldn't go back on the 1st.

What is your greatest memory while hunting?
Fehyd643 replied to DeerStalker22's topic in General Hunting
I only have one season under my belt, but my first deer ever is definitely it. I was lucky enough to harvest 4 deer last year, but my first deer ever was with a bow. About a 20yd broadside shot about 5 minutes after settling into my stand. Best morning ever! -
Welcome! Last year was my first year, so I'm kinda new at bowhunting as well. I've learned a lot from these guys here as they are pretty good at helping out and answering questions.

Looking for biometric or push keypad locks for my shotguns

Looking for biometric or push keypad locks for my shotguns
Fehyd643 replied to Deerthug's topic in General Chit Chat
I know this isnt what you are looking for, but my wife and I came up with a much cheaper solution. We have the key to our home defense shotgun on a keychain with one of those small keychain LED lights. This key is hidden but reachable at night near our bed, and pocketed during the day. -
Legally selling/trading a scary rifle?
Fehyd643 replied to Fehyd643's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
lol, that's the problem right there. We are all guessing at this point, even the LEO's, lawyers and judges! I'll learn more when I talk to my local FFL shop. I'll update you all with what I find out, as I am sure I am not the only one dealing with this. I really do appreciate all of the knowledge though. I know it's general advice and not exact law, but it helped me put my brakes on and avoid pissing off the king's minions. I waited until now hoping that things would change, but April is coming fast. -
Legally selling/trading a scary rifle?

Thanks for all of your great input! So, if I legalize the AR and sell it myself, can I also sell the "evil" parts separately? -
Legally selling/trading a scary rifle?
Fehyd643 replied to Fehyd643's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
I'm now in the Rochester area. When my kids head out (ROTC and Enlisted) we plan on moving to tx. Hopefully in the next 3 years I will be hog hunting with a new AR. It will be nice to kill my own pork to mix with my own venison! -
Legally selling/trading a scary rifle?
Fehyd643 replied to Fehyd643's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
The nature of my injury was a car accident that resulted in epilepsy. (my wife and I both deployed to the desert, and I get hit by a car on Ft. Drum... The irony!) My seizures went uncontrolled for 3 years, and much of that time was spent in the hospital. Due to that, my retirement required that my wife become my fiduciary. The law that makes this a flag for the Brady check is geared towards mentally unstable veterans (PTSD) that are deemed unfit to own a firearm. Basically, if you cant control your finances, you can't control a weapon. A bit of a stretch, but I understand where the flag comes from. My case is completely different, but the results are the same. There is a system in place that would allow me to contest the flag, but this would run the risk of messing with my benefits. I am 100% disabled, and I simply cannot risk my benefits being messed with. Not in this day and age! Joshua -
Legally selling/trading a scary rifle?
Fehyd643 replied to Fehyd643's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Thank you all for your input. All this just verifies to me that keeping the rifle is simply not worth the headache involved. I have a local FFI that has a good reputation. I will take it to him and see what he says. I'm seeing black rifles configured like my wife's go for ~1k on gunbroker and other online auction sites. If I can get 5-600 (enough for a short 308 like the Ruger American Compact and some ammo) I'll be ok. Not exactly happy, but ok. My main concern is just following all the legalities in selling/trading my baby. err... my wife's baby. -
Here's the situation; I am a medically disabled/retired veteran. Due to my disability, my wife is set up as my fiduciary (I am deemed mentally unable to deal with finances). What that means is that I am flagged in the FBI database in such a way as I do not pass the Brady check. A few years ago, my wife bought an AR15. Not for me, of course, as that would be illegal. The rifle has seen thousands of rounds at the range, and has taken down a few yotes and fox. We don't want to register it in April, and I am simply no longer comfortable transporting it to ranges or hunting areas as I would not be the registered owner. In short, I see no more enjoyment out of this rifle in the near future. I currently own a Remington 700 SPSV 308 and a Mossberg 500 20ga. I want to sell/trade my (wife's) AR for a shorter/lighter 308 for deer hunting. I just don't know the legality of such a transaction at this time. In short... Can anyone assist me in the proper/legal procedure in selling and/or trading my AR15? Is this something I can post here or on Craig's List? I appreciate any help Joshua
