Honestly- its hard to know the details of the hunt without having heard from the hunter himself. If the deer was taken legally thats good enough for me. He was likely more wary than all the yearling bucks that commit suicide every fall. That being said- I would be a lot more satisfied taking any mature buck in the Adirondacks still hunting than I would with a buck in the burbs.

I would say that the biggest reason not to do it is not to get hurt. Deer feet can cut like knives and the antlers- well we all know what they can do.

Whoa-whoa-whoa- that was a cheapshot, and off topic. You should have seen the poor buck fawn we found alive on thanksgiving with his ass blown apart and gangrene setting in. The only thing he was thankful for was a bullet in his head. All types of weapons wound and lose deer. There is nothing inhumane about bowhunting. At least the last thing a bow shot deer sees isn't a smiling human.

No- growing up we had sheep and rams. We have almost 200 bulls up 2.5 years old on the farm now. I've seen 'em big, and by no means was this buck anything like a ram or a bull, but he would have made the other boys in the locker room glance a little longer in the shower... I bet he'll have a lot of fawns running around next spring- or maybe not and that is why he was the way he was. Never before have I seen the hair worn off the inside of a bucks legs...

Are you able to load new sounds onto a Foxpro?

We used to have people come to our farm and kill cattle on the farm by slitting their throats according to their beliefs. Its not quick and the animal is concious until the last moment. I used to walk away. Looking into their eyes as the life oozes out of them is personal and makes you think twice about what you are doing. I started to stun them after that with a sledge- the people seemed fine with that and the animal was out cold and was unaware of what was going on.

150's? It is odd how light colored the antlers are as someone else pointed out and the is so little beading at the bases. Usually such homogenous light colored antlers only come from one place- but I like to give the benefit of the doubt. Heckuva deer too. Heavy, symetrical, character...

Wish he was a little closer.

Not safe- don't do it. I was with a guy this past weekend- he shot a buck- it was down, but not out. Wanted to slit its throat- no way Jose- shoot it. He shot it once more in the chest and the deer got up and ran another 50 yards before going down for good.

I witnessed this kind of crap this past weekend. I think the DEC may get a phone call. I don't know why people think it is ok to tag bucks with someone else's tag. And they are multiple little bucks too!

I kinda missed the part about my 870. Its the express model- so the barrel is matte finish and the stock is a cheap hardwood, beech? I've killed some nice bucks with it though including the one I use on my profile. It gets abused- I use it when tracking in the ADKs- it spends a lot of time in the palm of my right hand covered in snow and spruce needles.

Don't blame you. I can't say they are my favorite way. I get recruited to go with these guys because more than half of them are in their 70s and can't get around well. I sure don't bring them to any of my spots either. I don't know how they expect to see any deer the rest of the season now without pushing them out.

So- participated in some deer drives with the neighbors on their land. Pushed a doe, a fawn, and 2 yearling bucks out. No shots fired. Saw this nice rub. 6 of us were standing there strategizing for the next section when a doe and fawn came trotting by at 50 yards. None of us were ready, so they kept going. A couple minutes later this ill-fated buck came across an open field following the doe, hesitated a minute, and then stepped through a hedgerow and stopped in the open at 50 yards. 2 guys were kneeling and ready to shoot, one guy was standing and ready, and the other 3 just watched. You know the rest of the story. One of my neighbors was determined to have made the fatal shot. A really big bodied 3yr old. Maybe 175-180 dressed? The size of his (insert your preferred term for testicles here) really shocked everyone. Normally I don't pay any attention, but these were picture worthy (sorry ladies) . They were so big that the hair was worn off the inside of both of his legs. Everything appeared normal otherwise. I think they were slowing him down though.

Anybody shooting one? Any advice on loads? My dad has one and loves it and I have one in coming in the mail.

second encounter with a big buck. He is still walking

2500 bucks to not get out of the truck? Pathetic. I'd rather walk 10 miles and see no deer. -
I do. Pat rockets will tell you it makes a good hand warmer- he's right. Sucks when you bottle isn't as big as you'd hoped.

So, the neighbor shot across the property line.

I actually think a bigger deal was made by all who participated on this thread than what actually went down. And no- I had never seen, met, or spoken to the guy before he offered to shoot me 3 years ago. All I said back was Gee thanks. There are a lot of blue-blooded jackasses out there and some of them happen to hunt... -

Jafo- I don't think you read my original post thoroughly. There is no bad blood. I did not upset the wife. She was smiling as I shook her hand before I left. Law enforcement was not involved, the landowner was made aware of the situation but is not involved. I don't feel like I overreacted for a second. I just want the guy to be aware that its not ok to do what he did- a guy by the way who did not deserve to be merely warned considering my only other encounter with him. By the way- I am a farmer- I work hard all year and I take my hunting seriously. When I do get a chance to hunt I don't need anyone lazily poaching a deer up ahead of me even if it was only 20 yards across the line. Wrong is wrong, but the degree of which is why I was moderate, polite, and did not get DEC involved. -

Its more about the principle of it all. I don't own the deer; neither does he, but I am the only one with permission to shoot one on this property. Laws are laws. If you crosshave the line you crossed the line. Dont think for a second this is the first time either. The big thing is the history I have with this guy. Who offers to mistake you for a deer and shoot you? Not funny. -
Got into a groundblind today at 2:30 on a 130 acre farm I have been hunting for 4 years now. Rained like crazy last night and was clearing, so I was optimistic. At 2:45 I hear a shot close by. 7-8 blow by me. Crap. Oh,well. There are 2 adjacent pieces of property that are 100-200 yds from where I was and both guys hunt, so I was not particularly surprised to hear a shot come from that direction but in the back of my mind I strated thinking about the treestands that each of those guys has within 20 yards of the boundary line. Nothing wrong with that except one of them faces away from the farm I hunt, but the other one faces towards it,and thats where the shot came from. I hate going into the woods if I don't have to during hunting season, but I couldn't shake the feeling, so I wandered down there to have a look-see. I get to the area near that stand just in time to see a UTV pull away on the other property with 2 people in it. There was a gutpile I could see under the guys stand, so I knew he connected. The farm I hunt has a high-tensile electric fence along the boundary line for our dairy heifers, so I decided to walk along that to look for drag marks just in case. Sure enough there was a drag mark coming from mys side and headed downhill to the gutpile under the guys stand. I backtracked along the drag mark uphill about 20yds to a spot with a bunch of blood and a clump of hair. I know he could have shot the deer on the other side of the fence and it ran onto my side, but I've shot enough deer to know that clumps of deer hair usually are found at the spot where the deer was initially shot. Regardless of what exactly happened (no doubt in my mind), the fact that the guys treestand is 20 yards across the property line but faces back across has always pissed me off. Not to mention- 3 years ago I had permission to along the edge of the northern neighbor's property to access the N end of this farm and when I came out of the woods with my brother at dusk and am wlaking down the road this same SOB yells from his porch, "You'd better not do that during gun season- I might mistake you for a deer and shoot you." WTF- who even suggests stuff like that? So, I called the landowner and left him as message explaning the situation. Called the wrong office at the DEC to at least ask for advice and they gave me a different #. Called another neighbor hunter to at least verify that I was thinking of the right J-OFF. Then- I went to his house and politely knocked on the door. His teenage daughter answered the door, and no he was not home, he was at his hunting club showing off his crotchhorn. His wife was there however and I very politely explained my concerns. She said there was no way Jimmie would do something like that but then the daughter goes, "Oh, yeah- he shot it up on the hill and had to drag it back down to his treestand!" F-me! It was hard not to burst out laughing! All the while the wife is giving her the STFUP eyeball. The best part was the daughter said it twice just in case I had imagined it the first time! The wife also suggested that its hard to know where the line was...- (remember the electric fence?) She also acted surprised when I told her I was hunting that farm even though I was pretty sure she was standing on the porch with Jimmie 3 years before when he offered to mistake me for a deer. In the end I left my name and #, shook wife's hand and asked her to have Jimmie call me. I know this can'r be the first time as he only has 20 yards of his own property in front of his stand and then the farm that I hunt. I wonder if I can get a Posted sign the size of a billboard...
