  1. Does anyone else have a problem carrying their cva wolf across the chest? I always hit the barrel release and it opens up while stalking. Very annoying and I've lost several ramrods. Looking to replace it for only that reason, and suggestions on a light, mid-priced muzzleloader with some type of quick release breach plug and NO barrel release in front of the trigger guard?
  2. My tags were forwarded to me up here and got them yesterday. Funny, light green yellowish lime camo pattern to them. To be sure, only one fall turkey tag provided.
  3. As Finn Aagaard put it, the difference on plains game and not in theory of any cartridge from 7x57 through the big medium bore magnums is exactly nill. It's where you place it that counts. I still like fat and slow (kinda like me!) over light and fast. But that's just my gut preference.
  4. Did I miss something or are the announcers making more mistakes than the players? In yesterdays games the announcers announced first downs that clearly weren't, wrong downs, wrong players, in one case even the wrong team name. It's was like they weren't watching the game they were supposed to be announcing? Were the networks "trying out" their players as well? Perhaps it was pre-season comedy?
  5. Beech nut crop better than last year (none) in my area of the catskills.
  6. Well guys, I've got a sudden urge to get a browning '78 single shot rifle and need detailed information from you that is not generally available on the internet, brownings own historic pages, etc. General question, were all the '78s made in japan or were the first made in Utah? Any cut off or switch over dates and serial nos. would be helpful. Also, if you have any lists of calibers avail. and when, octagon or round barrel, monte carlo or classic comb stock, etc. I think you get the idea. I am looking at a 6mm rem. round barrel and a 300 H&H REF gun, neither of which really floats my boat, the 6mm has a round not oct. bbl and I can't find it as an original chambering. The 300h&h is a great cal. but the gun is too fancy. I also found a Penn. and a Kansas, commemorative rifles that are absolutely gorgeous in checkering, carving and engraving but would hate to ruin a one run state gun hunting. Let the experts on these guns expound forth!! and thank you. Jaeger
  7. Great topic. I carry my puma/rossi /92 lever gun in 454 casull loaded with 45 LC cartridges. 16" barrel and stainless steel. Weighs about 5 3/4 lbs. It has a fiber optic front sight and a peep rear sight (I take out the aperture and go "ghost ring") very, very fast acquisition. It fits me well and I can hit with it quickly. Now if only I can find a way to tone down the stainless steel, way too bright!!
  8. Beautiful pup Paula. best wishes finding your new pal!!
  9. My lifetime tags arrived Friday at my address downstate. Funny, but my dad's lifetime tags didn't arrive yet, same address. Go figure.
  10. Just checked when on the DECALS site this morning. The "bonus" permits in wmu 1c (eastern LI) are anterless only, the site specifically stated that they are doe permits and not the either sex permits given out in the past. A change, oh well.
  11. My first was a Winchester 94 30-30 I purchased the year before they went to rebounding hammers/angle eject. Unfortunately I let a "buddy" convince me to sell it cheap and it had never been fired. Really regret that and am looking to replace it. I also have a pair of Winchester 1895's. A 30-06 take down that shoots well but may have a headspace problem as the brass is difficult to extract after a few firings and a 38-72 flatside that has the bore pretty much shot out, going to try Hawk bullets as they are supposed to work well in worn bores. I have a puma/rossi 92 stainless 16" barrel in 454 casull that is fantastic except for being too shiny!!! Got a Turnbull 1886 in 475 turnbull on order, a custom job that just got away from me with all the options!! Like wanting a small shed and winding up with a 3 car garage, Ha! Now I'm interested in a Browning Model 78 single shot in 30-06 or 6mm, does that count as a lever action?? Got to love lever guns. Oh yeah, just remembered, I am wondering about the possibility of getting and rebarrelling a Savage 99 from 308 to 338 federal, how great would that work in the woods!
  12. Hey, I was looking for a way to hang up my crossbow and came across this: http://www.gunstands.com/raks.htm Looks handy!! Anyone else have a rack or way to hang up a crossbow other than just a nail or hook in the wall??
  13. Just got in this morning at around 6am. New layout to online system. I had no problem editing my profile, moving between screens and options. Did not purchase anything as I am not sure what WMU I would like to choose for my anterless DMP permit selection. Early morning seems to work well. Jaeger
  14. This came up on a national forum by a ny hunter as well. My mother, still down out on eastern long island, north fork WMU1c, just emailed me an article out of a local paper reporting the same thing. I had bowhunted LI for the fist 10-12 years of my hunting and we both agreed that making the first 15 days of the season doe only will only keep hunters out of the woods for the first 15 days. In an area where doe permits are almost unlimited, no one is going to go out the first 15 days if they can't shoot a buck. The DEC accomplished exactly the opposite of what they wanted. A better idea would have been to establish an "earn a buck" system for the first 15 days, shoot a doe then and get an extra buck tag. That would have really got the bowhunters taking down the does. I think the DEC generally does a great job, but sometime one just has to wonder if they think like the hunters or not. Below is what I posted there. Actually, the last I recall, if you do bring in a doe on an anterless DMP permit to a check station, they give you another doe permit. When I left the island if you brought a doe in that you took on a deer management permit (doe permit, not antlerless your get with bow/muzzleloader) you got an either sex tag. Now, back then, your first and second choices in 1C were guaranteed, a second drawing for two more tags was had in Oct. Hence, you started the season off with 4 deer management permits. if you filled any or all you got either sex tags. So, if you took your 4 does you got 4 either sex tags in addition to your regular season deer tag. You could take 5 bucks! Or if you brought in yet another doe off one of the additional tags you got another doe tag. Point is, you could start off with 4 doe tags and your regular tag and continue to take does until the season ran out or you used them to kill 5 bucks. And even that didn't cull the herd enough. 15. Might not be worst "gun handling" mishap but my worst gun related mishap happened in my mentors reloading room. My reloading mentor was showing me how to reload and after a range session we decided the load was not the best and proceeded to pull some bullets. He gave me a hammer type bullet puller and we put the cartridge in it. I started to hammer it on the ground, BANG!!!!! My heart stopped at the bang, and time was suspended while I waited for the main charge to go off and explode. It never came. After we caught out breath, and got our hearts going again, we determined that he had some loose primers on the floor and against all odds, I hit one with the hammer bullet puller! Taught me to keep a clean orderly gun/reloading room, I can tell you. _____________ Worst gun handling mishap might be when I blew my knee out during an icy deer season hunt and had to use my Rem 7600 as a cane to crawl home. The stock got all tore up. I keep it out of loyalty, it got me home, I'm keeping it scratches and all. note-three shots in the air only told the neighbors I was doing a lot of shooting, lot of good that did me.
  16. I also could not answer the survey as designed. The implement choices are not complete, perhaps "all of the above"? I hunt with true bows (longbows and recurves), Mecc bows (mechanically assisted compound and crossbows), rifle, pistol and muzzleloaders (percussion cap and in-line). In any given year it's some combination of these. I shoot my doe at any time I feel I have a good freezer doe in front of me. I don't know about bucks/freezer, never got one. But I do not hunt/hold out for a brusier. If I get a legal buck in front of me, I'll take it.
  17. I'm in exactly the same boat. My area, 4O is the same way. PP required and in the antler restriction area. Just across the street is 4F (where I do not have permission to hunt) with doe permit chances rated "high" for first choice and no antler restriction. Go figure. I know the DEC has to chop up areas in some sort of logical and easily identifiable fashion, but sometimes it makes little sense deer/habitat wise. 4O runs from Stamford in the north of Delaware county down to hancock in the South generally along the west side of the West branch of the Delaware river. Our herd up here is way different than that down there. As one who got a late start in life, I have a sore spot for the way the antler point restriction works. Anyone between 12-16, junior hunters, are not subject to the rule and I understand that. It should help hunter recruitment. But for me, who has never shot a buck in my life, I feel its harsh. A person should not be restricted in their first buck, most on this site got theirs before antler restrictions and if truth be told was probably less than 6 points, or at least less than 3 points on one side. With todays computer licensing system and reporting, I feel anyone should be able to take a legal 1 point greater than 3" buck if it is their first buck of their life, and then the rule should apply. And please don't say it wont work because people will just not report their first non antler restriction buck. If someone is not going to report their first buck, they are probably not going to report other bucks. Point is a rule is only as good as the people who follow it, many never report any bucks. But at least give a guy a chance to take the first buck of his life!! I'm going on because I am facing another season of why bother going out during rifle season? No qualifying bucks around (the antler point restriction theory is not working to produce bigger bucks here) and I can't shoot a doe without a permit. Perhaps, I should have started another thread and just agreed with the initial post on this one. If you read and understood this, thank you.
  18. I started with a CVA mountain rifle in .50 cal. percussion on eastern LI. On my last hunt, it rained hard. At the end of the day I Poured! out the powder mud and ball. Up on the Hither Hills area, had a blast! I now use a .45 cal. Hatfield long rifle here in the catskills, percussion also. Both guns have 1-66" twist or better for round ball shooting (the 45 might be a little faster twist). Last year I went to Pa. to Cabin Creek Muzzleloader's gun making clinic and started a 24 ga. flintlock fowler kit, can use .58 cal round balls as well as shot. Haven't finished it yet. Like hunting with a longbow or recurve, there is just something more primal and relaxing when hunting with a primitive weapon. Guess that's what the special seasons, bow and muzzleloader, were originally called the primitive weapon seasons.
  19. Would my dog count as a "permitted weapon" in this contest? She got the one under the house yesterday!
  20. Reading another thread on another site, I was surprised how many of them recommend a digital scale. I purchased an RCBS Model 10-10 balance type scale 2 years ago because my buddy (Mentor) constantly had problems with his digital scale, a Pact I think. The problems were that his florescent light caused reading fluctuations and then even his cell phone would cause issue if too close to the scale. Also, we had to constantly reset/recheck the zero about every 3 rounds. I am not ecstatic about my scale either. Sometimes I trickle a grain or two (or three or four) before any movement occurs and then sometimes a measured .5-2 grain jump on the scale. Not very confidence building. I think the arm may be dragging or something similar, but I cannot locate it. So............... 1. Does anyone else have a similar problem with a balance type scale? 2. What do you recommend for a good to top of the line digital scale? and finally 3. Are the digital scales with the built in powder measures worth it? Gimmicks? or more trouble than they are worth? FYI - I load for center-fire rifle and I do measure EVERY load. Thank you all in advance for any advice/experience. Jaeger
  21. Rob, the page you cited sums it up. But you do not have to have completed the formal combination training course. That is only one of the three options to qualify for getting a crossbow certificate. The other two are to complete the crossbow qualification on line or reading the Regulations guide and copying or cutting out the little qualification certificate provided there. Both of these options are self study programs, you read the material and sign the certificate provided. No formal training course is necessary. As far as the muzzleloader "qualification or permit" issue, I believe they require that you purchase and possess the Muzzleloader Privilege tag if you are going to hunt with the crossbow during the last 2 weeks of the bow season or during any of the muzzleloader seasons. You do not need a separate tag to use the crossbow during the regular rifle season. Hope this helps clear it up. To date I do not believe they put the crossbow certificate under the bow license (which would require crossbow users to complete the bow training course, probably a good idea). Realistically, it's probably too late to do that this year as the Regulations Guides are already being printed up.
  22. For me it #1 Grouse and #2 Squirrel. Both are very relaxing hunts. Both I can enjoy with my dog. I do love to deer hunt, but that is a much more equipment intensive and exhausting type hunt.
  23. Interesting! Most replies here are directed to Rabbits. What about the squirrels guys?!! They are fun too, and taste great. In the early season with the leaves on the trees, I'd go with a shotgun. After the leaf fall, they are more skittish and the reach of a .22 is helpful. But only if you're a good careful shot. Those bullets can travel a long ways. My first hunting was mostly Squirrel on long Island with a shotgun. More access and less competition on public land. I'm hoping to get out a few times this year with Schatz, and let her chase them up the trees for me. Good luck!
