Yes, they do still migrate, that is the migratory population does. The local nuesence geese do not. They did just such a kill off as desccribed in the original post around the NY city airports and Westchester county parks a few years ago after the airliner was forced down into the Hudson River. These were the very same geese we were hunting of the coast of Westchester. I can't say as that I blame them though. When the geese get so thick they become a threat to human safety something has to be done. We were shooting a lot of geese prior to that but didn't put a dnet in the population. Hunters in that area don't shoot enough to offset the young of the year.

Get out there and slay them! In CT during the early season there is a 15 bird daily limit. You can use unplugged shotguns and hunt untill 1/2 hour after sunset.

I'm about an hour away just outside of Lttle Falls. I have a bunch of people come to my place on many Sondays for some dog training. This weekend I'm at an AKC Hunt Test in CT. But next Sunday I'll have a group training session. If you'd like to join us let me know. This is not something we charge for it's just a bunch of people interrested in Retriever training getting together to train.

Where do you live?
-
Lookslike a nice pup. Are you planning to waterfowl hunt with him?
-
What a shame, life sucks, don't it.

I'm not much of a fan of Facebook. Maybe I never learned to use it properly. But it seems everytime I looked at my page I had a lot of useless dribble from people that had nothing of interest to say and nothing but time to say it. Then I was getting bombarded by people that I didn't know requesting to be my friend probably so the could send me more useless dribble.

Have the NY waterfowl seasons been determined for 2010-11 yet?
-
Papabear, I've been training retrievers for over forty years. I've owned many trained many Master Hunters, and the only dog in the state of Conn. to be inducted into the Master National Hall of Fame. I compete regularly in Field trial and hunt tests. I currently have one dog that made the national derby list and is qualified all age. I know when to use pigeons, I'm looking for DUCKS.
-
What harnesses do you guys recommend? I must honestly say I haven't used one and now that my wife is also hunting we need to use something.
-
I have trouble with other hunters that feel their way is the only way. For example bow hunters that feel muzzleloaders shouldn't have a special season. Or bow hunters that feel their compound bow is fine but nobody should be allowed to hunt with a crossbow. I wish all hunters would just suport each other and mind their own business. You hunt your way and I'll hunt mine.

I'm not looking for Ducks not pigeons.
-
My propety is in Manheim just east of Little Falls. I hunt deer, turkey, geese, ducks and upland birds.
-
Yeh, once that flight way force to land in the Hudson River they went around killing geese all around NYC. Our goose hunting off the Westchester coast got pretty messed up by that.

Your post doesn't make any sense. NYB is opposed to crossbow hunting how would they deserve any credit if the crossbow is allowed in the archery season? Yet, I have no doubt that they would try to take credit.
-
Could be the same people. Do you happen to be a waterfowl hunter?
-
NYB is not doing anything for most NY archers. They have their own little agenda and if you don't fit their mold they aren't helping you. Let me rephrase your last question, "What is NYB doing for the crossbow archers?"
-
Well Doc I don't see NYB as an oranization standing up for archer in the state of NY. I see them as a group of self-righteous hypocrites such as yourself, that feel they have the right to determine what everyone else should be doing. Much like the anti hunters feeling they have the right to determine there should be no hunting. Read your own post where you have determined the archery season belongs to NYB members. You have decided for everyone that the crossbow is an inappropriate weapon. You have determine that there is no justification for a muzzleloader season. It is no wonder that most archers in the state of NY want nothing to do with your organization.
-
Well, to tell the truth I feel the archery season is where the crossbow belongs. I've hunted with a bow since I was a teenager and there have always been archers opposed to changes of equipment. There were those that felt a recurve bow shouldn't be in the same season as the longbow. And the compound bow stirred up at least as many arguments as the crossbow. Now as I am closeing in on my senior license the shoulders and elbow make pulling a compound pretty difficult. I'd welcome the use of a crossbow during archery season. Then who know maybe I can join NYB and have less of a chance of missing my foot.

Lights! How do you walk into the woods in pitch darkness?
capt_terry replied to TheHunter's topic in General Hunting
I step into the darkness, wait a few minutes while my eyes adjust, then walk.
