Just a hypothetical question for fun You see a 220 class buck or bigger in gun season run past you only shot you have is back side . Chances are you will never see a buck that big again would you take the shot ? when I say back side I mean all you see is the white tale sticking up in the air as it moves away from you . Would you chance taking that shot . And has anyone here ever killed a deer taking a shot like that with a gun .

Yea that's what I thought I have stuff left from my grandfather the boxes have turned yellow there so old easy 30 plus years old and it still shoots every time I used it .

Anyone no what the Shelf life of ammo is I have shot some stuff that has been sitting around for ever i never had a problem but I always wondered about that .

I looked on satellite view of this park on Google maps it's all crops farm land around it that's why they get big there . Plus you need a permit to hunt there they only let in so many people and I do believe it's shotgun only . To far for me anyway .

LJC replied to LJC's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
Honestly I don't remember anymore . I just stick with the ones I use now . Im happy with them . May have brought the gun to the range back then but it's just so long ago I can't remember really . If I tried them all in the woods or at range . Back then some years i was hunting in rifle zone so i would us my rifle . I only remember just testing the sluggers off shooting sticks last time I played around with it . -

I actually don't even remember the last time I tested all the different chokes and slugs . Probably 15 20 years ago . There could be even better ones out there now . Besides I'm not using a scope as I said in the other post so Im not the guy to give you the exact accuracy of these things because you're always going to shoot a little better with it scoped . There are a few field and stream articles on this . Here is one check it out . http://www.fieldandstream.com/blogs/gun-nuts/2012/07/smoothbore-slugs -
What is your favorite smoothbore shotgun slug ammo for deer

O yea i saw that the guy no doubt is a expert shot. BUT it does show the potential of a shotgun I mean he can't perform miracles. I had to try a bunch of different ammo and chocks to get the one that shot the best in mine even bought a rem rifled choke tube . But I found for some reason in my gun anyway I got the best accuracy with 3" rem sluggers and improved cylinder choke. You have to experiment with them to know for sure . -

Depends 3 4 5 inch groups if you have the right slug gun combo something like that . He is shooting out to 80 yards in this I believe off hand check it out you really don't need lazer acuracy on deer with a slug they go down . -

You should really go check out some youtube hunting videos of guys using smoothbore shotguns for deer especially the ones of deer drives in fields if you want to see how effective a shotgun can be on deer . -
Yea,it's kind of sad to see funny because I here gun sales are up but sadly that's because of all the fear of are curupt moronic government trying to take are gun rights away . Just so they can be even more curupt and moronic then before know doubt .

What is your favorite smoothbore shotgun slug ammo for deer

I don't hunt corn fields all brush thickets mostly 60 yards is all you can shoot that's why . Btw averge shot in ny is only 75 yards on deer . Plus I can switch out slugs for small game loads hunt deer in the morning small game mid day back to deer later in the day with out going back to the car or carrying another gun . The deer don't care if you hit them 4 inches to the left or right of the vitals organs . Dead all the same but its kinda of like asking why hunt with a recurve bow or a,muzzleloader or a airgun . It's just for the challenge in a way . And because I can my smooth bore is plenty acurate for deer even out to 100 really but realistically not going to get a clear 100 yard shot on a deer in the places I hunt anyway . -
In westchester and Putnam we get alot of guys from new York and long Island If not for those guys there would be hardly any hunters around here . So the public lands still get hit hard down here you have to get up to the Catskills to really get away from it really and even a little farther then that even . Some older guys i no 60s 70s actually think it was better hunting when you had 100 cars lined up on the side of the road in the public lands I hunt because the deer had to just keep moving all day long and not go Nocturnal because of all the hunters in the woods there was less places for them to hide .
-
Thats, why I only stay in one spot for no more then 2,3 hours max then it's spot and stalk time or some times I start hunting small game it's not like I need the deer meat it's all for fun anyway for me.
-
Personally my favorite way to hunt is spot stalk or tracking in the snow . On a large track of state land Love it . Just staying in one spot in a stand or blind all day long I get tired of it pretty fast i like moving around doing it old school even if it's harder . Or a good old fashioned deer drive . I don't care if it's harder its just a better time to me .
-
Hang um high Just wanted to add that there are many factors involved in why some guys are shooting different size deer such as time able to spend in the woods . if you like to stalk walk and hunt or just old school sit on a rock and hunt or use a pop up blind use a permanent blind us a climber us a hang on stand hunt public land hunt private land hunt farm land and the type of terrain cover there is on the land the deer per sq mile in that area . Lots of no hunting zones in the area . Xct. not everyone is as lucky to live in the zone that produces the biggest racks or be able to drive there from across the state so chill out with your speaches of I'm a Superior Hunter . That's totally subjective .
