  1. Last year in the middle of October it was way too windy to hunt so I decided to go out and move a stand instead in my street clothes...don’t know why i’m even bothering to bring my bow...wait...are those...antlers..down in that ravine...? Wind was perfect enough that I got within 30 yards and nailed him. Nicest deer I have gotten so far. So you never know...

  2. Thanks for the great reply! What little woods craft I have has been learned by trial and error (mostly the latter) or from books. I have an ‘adult onset’ version of the hunting bug, and have only been really serious about bowhunting for the past few years. So i am trying to figure out what actually works around here.

  3. OnX Hunt and Scoutlook are the two I have played with.

I used to really like the scent cone and wind forecasting ability of scoutlook, but I just re downloaded it to my new phone and I don’t seem to be working

OnX Hunt was awesome as I was preseason scouting the area I live in looking for new spots—it let me know who owned what.

    What do y’all use?

  4. Since my understanding is that ‘middle of the middle’ is where you hit a bear, I remember ‘B is for bear; B is for bullseye’. A little silly I guess but i think I’ll still remember it when I am stupid with Bruin Fever watching the bear skin rug of my dreams walk past the stand.

the one thing I like to keep an eye out for at garage sales and in the garbage (especially in the next month and a half) is old artificial Christmas trees. I've used the branches to camo things in. Really worked well in our old built in lumber stands.  drill a hole and stick a branch in. bend limbs how you want them and no need to worry about leaves falling off.  On a ladder or lock on drill holes in a the tree or zip ties work well.

So you have maple pine trees - pretty unique looking I bet

It’s the ornaments and blinking lights that always get me busted...

  6. I’m hesitant to rattle (grunt, bleat etc)  at the best of times—afraid that my novice attempts are way more likely saying “idiot hunter over here” instead of “hot all estrus doe action”.

how do you guys feel about it? Are you using your rattling antlers? Is it working? Is it going to work but not until next week? Any suggestions and advice welcome

I am located in 4Y—Columbia county—eastern NY 1 hour below Albany. Seeing lots of does and a couple of spikers. Except after I rattle. Then I see nuthin.

  7. Love my cabelas gore-Tex bibs and parka. Used to have the scent-lok stuff but the lineing on both pieces eventually tore out, and when I returned it to cabellas they didnt have the scent lok so I got it without instead. Actually far prefer it without—a hell of a lot lighter and cooler. Love the quiet chamois finish on the jacket—zero noise or restriction on the draw. Bibs I wish were smooth tho—the soft fabric collects burrs, and when enough collect on my legs I start to sound like Velcro when I walk. The parka is actually my go-to 2nd layer at this time of the year rain or shine. I spread it out behind me in the tree so I can get it on with minimal movement when I cool down from the walk out. Downsides: Armpit zips would be nice, and the Velcro straps at the wrist cuffs were a PITA—inevitably cinched up tight when I was quietly trying to ease the jacket on while in a tree. so I cut them off flush to the jacket and all better-er

  8. Have a 4T, could use a 4Y. Or any tips or suggestions regarding 4T. Moved here 3 years ago and haven't done much exploring out of our immediate area. (Claverack/Churchtown)

    and good luck tomorrow!

Live in Claverack; moved up here 3 years ago from RI and haven't looked back.

Bowhunter, deer mostly. Late onset hunting disorder--caught the bug as an adult and now spend every second I can up a tree.

Guess you could say I'm Papa to a two-year-old, a professional sculptor, a volunteer firefighter, and a bow-hunter, and pretty much in that order.
