Hey Guys, it was definitely great meeting everyone and competing against a great group of guys. I'm the guy that had the Limb break on the Mathews. I brought it to Smith Point Archers and the guy said that's the first time he's seen anything like it. It was definitely scary and glad that thing didn't explode. I'll find out today what the deal is. In any case, it was a great time with good people and would definitely do it again. If any of you guys wants to get together for a hunt this fall give me a ping. I usually head out alone since none of my buddies hunt so it would be great to hunt with you guys. Thanks again to John for putting this together and bringing everyone to this event, it was definitely worth it. Your Friend, John (a.k.a jpolihro)

Relatively new to coyote hunting and was wondering if anyone was interested in hooking up for a coyote hunt upstate. I live on Long Island and wouldn't mind taking a ride for the day to hunt coyotes upstate (I don't own any land so it would either be on state land or maybe knock on some doors to get permission). None of my buddies hunt yotes so I figured I'd reach out on here to see if anybody wanted to get a hunting partner for some yotes. send me an email [email protected] Thanks for any advice John

New Video - You Gunna Shoot 'im?

You guys put some great videos out there, keep em coming. -
Thanks Rich, maybe i'll head out for some fox. I have Distress calls that should bring them in, I just wasn't sure if anyone had seen them during the day here on the island. I live in Coram which is close to Rocky Point and Otis Pike, I was thinking of checking out some Rocky Point Fields.

Excellent, thank you guys for the info. Night hunting sounds like it could be challenging and it seems like hunters would have better success with predators since most move at night.
-
Yeah that's what I figured. I think I'd have better luck heading upstate and hunting coyotes. Thanks for the heads up.

Has anybody done any racoon or fox hunting on the island? I know it's shotgun season for deer hunting but I plan to hunt only on weekends. They say night hunting is the best but I don't have the time to head out there at night. Curious to see how difficult it may be during the day.

You need a red spot light for night hunting correct? I've never gone night hunting before. I'm assuming you spot them with the red spot light and then light them up with a regular light for the shot. I don't have a night vision scope on my .308. Do they get spooked very easily with the red spot light? Is it easy to shoot through a regular scope at night when you have the light on them? Curious to find out how this works. Thanks for the help. John

Wow, 3 feet of snow sucks to move around in. I would definitely invest in some snow shoes if we got that much snow. We normally don't get too much snow and when we do it's usually gone in a couple of days. This year we've gotten an exceptional amount of snow and it just so happened right before we headed to Sterling. i won't be able to get up there next weekend since I'm going skiing but after that I think most of the snow should be gone and I'll be out there again. There are a few valleys that I would like to try at Sterling Forest for some yotes. I keep hearing that they are all over the place out there.

Yeah, that's a good idea, I have to look at google maps and see where there may be farms that are somewhat of a close ride from long island. If anybody has any suggestions on which towns in Orange or Putnam counties may have some farms worth asking it would be greatly appreciated.
-
Yeah Sterling Forest seems to be the best bet with over 17,000 acrest to hunt on that's that closest state property to where I come from (Long Island). We plan on venturing out there for some more yotes after the snow's gone. It's too tough to navigate through there now with all the snow.

I was told by the DEC that Cranberry is a good spot for Coyotes which I don't doubt. I think the problem is that there is limited parking and you can't post anywhere without having somebody walk by you and ruin the hunt. I think that being that it's so close to the city, a lot of people head there for the day and it's not a large parcel of land. i guess the best time to try that peice of land is when the conditions are horrible and nobody wants to go outside. I'm sure it's great for small game hunting but as far as posting for either deer or yotes, I don't think you'll have the peace and quiet you'll be looking for. I may be wrong since I haven't been at Cranberry for years but from what I hear, there are too many people in those woods for you to do anything but hunt for birds or rabbits.

Hey Dave, I'd head out there with you for Squirrels, I have a .22 that I would like to try out at Sterling. When we went, we were targeting yotes and noticed some deer tracks on the way in. We noticed some small game tracks as well but we didn't hike too far in since the snow was too deep. I'm sure we would have some luck with squirrels out there, there's a lot of land to hunt out there and the only way to get familiar with the spots is just to go out there and check out different areas.

Hey Toruk, yeah we just missed each other there, got off to a late start. Met up with A6A6 (Mark) at 1PM at the visitor's center and we headed out by 2PM. It was a good time being out in the woods. I plan on heading up there again. It's a beautiful place with plenty of land to hunt. The snow made it difficult to move around but still a good time. Centerpunch, we were going to move around and try different spots but with the snow being at least 8", it was difficult getting up steep hills. There a few spots in Sterling Forest that have the terrain you describe. I'll be checking out the Sterling Forest area again real soon.

BKLN....LOL...yeah thanks for saving me a crap load of time and money....I found out the hard way about hunting cranberry many years ago so I haven't been back there since. Since I'm new to Yote hunting, I'm trying to find people to hunt with and different places to hunt. Looks like this is the right forum to be in. So far I found Sterling Forest to be the best bet but I would love to come up by your neck of the woods and shoot some dogs, let me know when you head out there.

Thanks for the info, it saved me a 2 1/2 hour trip from long island and waste my time trying to get anything out of there. Looks like I'll have to look elsewhere for yotes. Sterling Forest seems like the best bet for me. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated since I'm new to Yote hunting.

Hey Guys, went up to Sterling Forest with Mark on Monday and we hit the power lines right by the NYU apartments on the yellow trail. Got a late start at about 2PM and hunted there until it got dark. Mark was using the Fox Pro electronic caller which was amazing. We saw a lot of deer tracks and some yote or dog tracks couldn't really tell. Nothing was moving though. We had the Fox Pro howling and distress calls but no responses. I was glassing the ridges to see if anything was moving but no sign at all. According to the guys at the visitor's center there are yotes all over the place. We just have to put more time in to find the spots. We'll keep you guys posted on more locations. The snow made it difficult to get around in the woods. Hopefully when it thaws a bit we can get out there again and try a different spot. John

Hey Thanks for the heads up, I was told that Cranberry gets crowded. I was up there once a few years ago and did see a lot of dog walkers. I wasn't sure about great swamp but thanks for clearing that up. I hate being out in the woods posted up and seeing a bunch of people walk by. A friend and I decided to check out Sterling Forest Monday and I think that's where I'm going to head from now on. We didn't see anyone out there and it was a lot closer to home. We didn't get to see any yotes but we did see a lot of tracks from different wildlife. I think Sterling Forest is the best bet and there's a lot a space to explore out there. Cheers

Hey if any of you guys want to head out tomorrow morning, let me know. I'll be at the Sterling Forest main office getting my permit at 8AM. My name is John and my email adddress is [email protected]. I think I'm going to head on Sat for a morning hunt and then again on Monday. Like Toruk said, I don't know if I'l lbe able to do Sunday morning since I'm going out Sat night. So for now my plans are a Sat. morning hunt followed by an all day hunt on Monday. Let me know if you guys are interested.

Yes, that's in putnam also, it's west of cranberry. I've never been but the NY DEC site says there's a lot of wildlife in there. Here's the link to give you more info http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/68929.html Seems to be a lot of wetland but looks like there some good hunting ground as well. I've never been there so I don't know how crowded it gets. I guess the only way to find out is to head out there and check it out.

I need to go get my permit from the Sterling Forest main office at 8AM when it opens. I don't know whether or not to go Sat morning or Sun since Saturday afternoon I have a party to go to on Long Island. I'm off on Monday so I'm definitley heading out there on Monday. If you head out there Sat I can join you but I have to start heading back around 1 or 2 PM. Monday is definite though.

Does anybody hunt coyotes in Sterling Forest. I'm heading out there for the first time this weekend and curious to see if anyone has been successful there. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I've been told it's a great place to hunt but there are a lot of hikers. I figured that with all the snowfall, nobody will be out there hiking. I'll give a report after this weekend to let you guys know how it went.

Hey Guys, new to this forum and looking to hook up with people to hunt coyotes with. I just started yote hunting this year and looking to learn the ropes. I live on long island but looking to head upstate (not too far north) to hunt some yotes for the day. Any help would be much appreciated. I had cranberry mountain and great swamp in mind but hunting alone isn't as much fun as hunting with buddies. Let me know if anyone is interested, I can only do weekends though. Thanks John
