  1. Suffolk Archers is a members-only operation. They run some public events; usually one a month. Does Blue Mtn require Westcherster County residency? I haven't been there in a few years but I thought the gun range was residents-only.
  2. North Hempstead NY checking in. We have a STOP program where you can bring it to the dump a couple of sundays a month. I think if you bring too much crap at once they make you drive onto a scale and pay a tipping fee but for a singe tv or computer you just toss it onto the heap. My office building also pays a service to come a few times a year to clear our electronic flotsam and jetsam

    Roadkill

I noticed the same last year around this time when going back and forth to Harrisburg. It got to the point that it freaked my kids out a bit seeing so many dead animals on the road. I've often wondered how many were collision casualties versus fell off or out of someone's car.
  4. Thanks. Realtree looks like predominantly brown with a slight dusting of green. Their camouflage guide on the website is pretty good; thanks for the suggestion. I wouldn't have thought to look there.
  5. I searched the site and did not find anything recent. This will be my first season hunting turkey and deer, predominantly on Long Island but I plan to venture up to Westchester and Putnam. I have zero items of camouflage. I'm partial to wool products since I wear them hiking and cycling, so I've been looking at First Lite. They have patterns called "Fusion" and "Cipher" that appear to be green or brown-dominant respectively. UA's stuff appears to have the same color separation. Where do I want to be in terms of color palate? More green or brown? Or does it even matter? I can look out the window and see what the landscape is but for the life of me cannot figure this out! And it's not as if I'm color blind...something about the patterns in the ads screws with my perception about what matches. It's so much easier to bird hunt: just strap on an orange vest Thank you.
  6. Anyone here using a Sig Kilo; in particular, the 2000 with auto brightness adjustment? They get good reviews--and are available unlike the Leupolds that are backordered-----just not sure if 7x magnification is the way to go for close quarters work like tree stand or blind hunting,
  7. The 1200 is discontinued. I’m a bit reluctant to buy something discontinued on the outside chance it has issues and Leupold says “ you bought a discontinued product..” Some optics companies can be a PITA about that sort of thing.
  8. I am looking for a RF to be used for hunting and 3D. My ability to judge distance is pretty inconsistent so I'd like to get some practice in pre-season. After looking over a lot of threads and reviews, the Leupold models with TBR and DNA get good reviews. I'd like to have one with angle compensation. Unfortunately, the current models ( I was looking at the 1300i) are back ordered through April according to Leupold. I'm not sure I want to wait that long. Please suggest suitable alternatives. The local F&S seems to favor Vortex but I've read some mixed reviews. The Bushnell Scout is another unit that pops up in the Google shopping search. Thank you.
  9. 5.11 stuff! Really? That seems asinine. LEOs buy that stuff as does EMS and fire. There’s a 5.11 boutique near me so no great loss but I don’t see the point of ditching apparel and patches.
  10. Taconic Hereford is very popular with mountain bikers and Wassaic with hikers/dog walkers. So, just be mindful of that. I'm not sure about Wassaic but you can also camp overnight at T-H in designated spots. You can call or email the DEC for advice. They actually answer and offer helpful information about where to try and where to avoid.
  11. What strategies do you use to transport your harvest when you do not have a pickup truck? I attended my bowhunter education course and the instructor asked to see the hands of people who don't have a truck. We were talking about how to avoid bringing ticks home with you in your car. To my surprise I was the only person in a room of 50 to raise a hand. I drive a small SUV. And I really hadn't given this much thought! I figured I would just field dress and put the meat in a cooler or, if that was not practical, put the seats down and lay out a tarp. The instructor said that I should expect the car to be inhabited by ticks if I did that. So, I'm open to suggestions and advice. How to you move your harvest around if you don't have a truck? My car has a light duty trailer hitch for a bike rack. The first thought that comes to mind is one of those fold down metal trays, with the animal wrapped in a tarp to be discrete. Thank you.
  12. That was excellent! And I think turkeys from the supermarket are cheaper than a 3d target; more economical to practice on
  13. Doh! I think I have the Managed Land Permit for mtn biking. I didn't realize it was the same thing. Side question, since ticks were mentioned: I've been negligent: I routinely mountain bike through areas known to have ticks and, although I ALWAYS cover up my skin, I've never gone the extra step of treating to clothes with chemical. I will do that for hiking/hunting......here's my question.. Do you put those clothes in your home washing machine (separate of course from regular clothes) when you're done? I can imagine my wife freaking out about permethrin running through the machine.
  14. This will be my first season. I want to get some leg work in over the spring and summer, learning the landscape of the public lands in Suffolk. I've car-scouted some areas (Wildwood for example) and notice that the assigned parking spots to gain entrance to the hunting areas require a permit or pass for hunting. Do those rules apply off season? In other words, can I park in one of those spots today and hike in, or will I be ticketed for not displaying the pass? Assuming the ticket is in play, how do you gain access? Park in a residential 'hood and walk? I'm reluctant to do that without knowing the neighbors' attitudes about people parking in front of their homes to hike into the hunting area. Thank you.
  15. I may give it a whirl, or at least prepare for it. Being new to the sport, this would give me a goal to practice toward and, as I understand it, there are courses with different levels of difficulty. Reminds me a little of sporting clays regional shoots**. There are a few videos out there of events from across the country. Looks like a hoot! A 3 day sporting clays shoot would be a LOT more than what they are charging! The only downside is that it's a 5 hour drive.
  16. I've been thinking about your offer. I won't go a penny over $1585 an hour! We can cover the tree stand in a separate lesson. I'm sure I come across as a puss, and that wasn't my intention. I just want to develop good habits and go from there. The best way I know how to do this (from shotgunning) is to have a coach/lesson. I went to another place this past week and they set me up with a rental where I could not see through the peep and could not reach the trigger with my index finger. I never expected 90 mins of undivided hand-holding, but they should at least make sure the thing fits and works before they turn you loose on the range. I watched other customers get the same service, so it wasn't just me. I tried one last place today. In 20 minutes the guy adjusted the rental bow and the trigger, gave a few pointers and had me shooting grouped shots. Cost me $10 for the range and $20 tip. It was never about the length of the lesson, just the quality.
  17. I could use some more guidance. I’ve visited a couple of shops and have seen some flaky behavior that makes me wonder if the people are competent and made me realize that the bow tech is probably more important than the salesperson. For example, shops selling people bows without measuring them, sending them out with sights etc not adjusted properly. For a new comer this can be the difference between initial success and failure. Not talking about a big box store either. Appreciate more suggestions; in particular, a place that really knows fitting and setting up the bow. Feel free to PM if that is more discreet. If there’s a better, more local forum that I should be asking this question please suggest it. Archerytalk.com didn’t appear to have an active NY sub forum
  18. Finding my way to a 3D range is definitely on my agenda. I need to get a little more squared away in terms of technique first. Although it didn’t expect 90 mins of custom lesson, I did expect something more than “don’t run with arrows in your hand” and “ here’s where you want to have your hand near your face” before disappearing. Live and learn. my quest for a reputable shop is so that I don’t end up getting pushed toward a target bow or other items unecessary for hunting I’ll check out Smith Point re
  19. Greetings, I'm a new member here seeking some referrals to reputable and knowledgeable shops on the island. I'm a bird hunter who has developed an interest in bow hunting and hope to harvest my first deer next season. I've taken a lesson** and started to poke around some shops on the island and realize that some seem to cater to a school-aged, competitive archery crowd. Nothing wrong with that but I'm not really interested in comp. target shooting in and of itself. I'm looking to develop a relationship with a shop/instructor that knows about hunting. I'd appreciate some referrals/ suggestions for shops that are hunter-focused, or at least have someone on staff who can speak intelligently on the subject. I'm in Western Nassau, near the Queens border. Not afraid to drive for good service. ** 90 min lesson at a place catering to high schoolers, in which the "instructor" spent 15 minutes with me then walked away to shoot on his own. I'm hoping this isn't representative of all the shops in the area and hope the guidance here will get my on the right track without having to visit every shop. Thank you Bob
