With the exception of Fire Island, where the deer will take a hot dog bun out of your hand. I’ve never been able to just walk within 20 ft of a deer before. While scouting my property in Sullivan county today, I walked up to this guy who didn’t care at all. I trimmed some shooting lanes while he stood next to me and ate. I said you do realize I’m back here on Sunday right? He looked at me and kept eating acorns.8 points

Got out this morning with my son for some early September goose hunting. It was a beautiful morning and we scored on 3 birds. My lab Waylon had the most fun retrieving the birds.8 points

The Good Lord blessed me with a fat mature doe at 2 minutes past sunset this evening. Beat the buzzer by 28 minutes. I’m lovin this early antlerless gun season. Takes most of the “meat” pressure off for the remainder of the seasons this year.8 points

The Good Lord blessed me again on the second Sunday of the early antlerless gun season. I “doubled down” on the “Jesus first” thing in the late morning, after a short uneventful early morning hunt with no deer sighting, church and adult Sunday school. After that, my wife had a heck of a honey-do list for me. I knocked off everything she asked for and then some. Then I drove about 20 miles to my parents place, on the opposite corner of wmu 9F. They had lots of work for me to do also, before I could go hunting. Once again, I knocked all of that and then some. This is where the “Others second” came in. I was much later than I wanted to be, back in the double ladder stand that goosifer sold me for $20 a couple years ago. That’s where the “Yourself last” thing came in. I thought I blew it again over there, by picking the wrong stand, as I had the previous Saturday afternoon. My dad had mowed the clover plot out back, during the week, to a short stubble. Between that and hearing the old boss doe blowing downwind, 1/2 hour before sunset, I thought for sure I was in for nothing. Once again, I decided to give up before sunset, and started to pack up my stuff. Just after I pulled off my camo face mask, I heard the unmistakable sound of hoof steps, in the tall goldenrod upwind. She stepped out, 45 yards away, 2 minutes after sunset. I cranked the old Redfield scope up to 7x and verified the lack of headgear or buttons, then settled the crosshairs on the back lower corner of her inboard shoulder blade. When the smoke cleared, there she laid: The J.O.Y. doe, 28 minutes before the closing buzzer of the early antlerless gun season. T/C Omega 50 cal, 240 gr XTP, (2) T7 50 gr pellets, Redfield wide field 2-7x. Ive only eaten her fillet mignonettes so far (made tacos with them) and once again, they were “to die for”. She was about as close to perfect of a “grinder doe” that a guy could ask for. With both of my first draw dmp tags punched now, and our meat supply in decent shape, I’m going to be a bit more selective than usual with my (5) remaining deer tags.7 points

When I was a kid my dream cartridge was the 264 Winchester mag, looking at the ballistic charts of that cartridge made that young barefoot country boy drool. When I talked to my Dad about the 264 he talked me out of getting one, it is a barrel burner he said. To re-enforce the barrel burner propaganda my brother purchased a used model 70 in 264 Win mag and the throat was eroded so bad that he was lucky to hit a pie plate at 100 yds. So that kind of ended my desire for a 264. Fast forward to these days and both old and new 6.5 cartridges have become all the rage in the shooting and hunting world with the Creedmoor leading the charge making me take notice. I again seriously considered a 264 Win mag and also 6.5-284 got my attention, but the one that checked off the most boxes for me was the 6.5 PRC (precision Rifle Cartridge. The thing that held me back from getting one was the rifles being chambered in that cartridge, while I know the fiberglass and composite stocks and muted finishes are great performers I am more of a traditional wood and polished blued steel sparkler type. Always on the lookout for what I wanted I found on Guns International a beautiful Riflemans rifle, a Winchester model 70 Featherweight chambered in the 6.5 PRC at a very good price. To make a long story short by the end of the weekend (getting under the wire of the new state horseshit law) I should have the rifle and all of the loading components and Dies to make her go bang and hopefully kill a Deer with this upcoming season. Was out with my Brother moving, swapping hanging new stands today. Came across this rub. Put up a few new Muddy and big game 18' stands. Really went up nice and very sturdy. Nothing like a new stand! lol7 points

I’m definitely thanking Him for this “fatted calf” that He blessed my wife and I with last night: I can’t wait for a fillet mignonette sub for dinner tonight, and I’m really looking forward to the liver.7 points

Hit the timber late afternoon with the Kimber 22 rifle for the Squirrel opener and took my first Squirrel of this season. After shooting those tiny flies in that Fly Swatter Challenge with that rifle the Squirrel looked as big as an Elephant. Weather was beautiful and the woods had quite a bit of wildlife activity, saw a couple of Deer and a Gray Fox, was great to be out there. Al7 points

The good Lord blessed me with this wmu 9F button buck on the first Sunday afternoon of the early antlerless gun season. Marlin 512, 2-3/4” Hornady SST, Redfield/Leupold Revolution. 2-7x. I got into my favorite two-story truck cap blind about 5:00 that afternoon. At 5:45, a smaller antlerless deer appeared in the clover plot behind me, 40 yards away. I saw it when I turned and made eye contact. My gun was laying on the opposite side rest. I attempted to make a super slow motion turn and reach for the gun, but if detected the motion and high-tailed it into the thick cover. As sunset approached, the mosquitos got very intense. I had a camo face mask on, but they were even getting in under that. I decided to give up under their repeated attacks, about 15 minutes before sunset. I removed the camo mask and packed up my other gear. When I looked up, I saw the little buck feeding on foot high Timothy hay, about 90 yards away. I mistook it for a mature doe, because the head looked long and it looked significantly larger than the deer that I saw earlier. It was very good size for this years deer. Must have veen born early and definitely has been eating good. The liver alone made two “to die for meals”. The rest of the meat will be saved for “special occasions”. I’m thinking of bringing one of the butt roasts (made (6) of those from that little guy) up to my in-laws for early antlerless week, so that she can stuff a Thanksgiving Turkey with it. My wife did that a couple years ago, and that was the best tasting meat I ever had on Thanksgiving in my 58 years.6 points

First time hearing about this too. The purple paint will help with the ya-hoo's ripping down the signs we tack up. But outside of us actually standing there. The scumbags will continue to trespass.6 points

The beauty of this site is that none of this is forced on anybody. You have to go out of your way to access any of the posts here. You have to consciously click on this part of the site to be able to view any of it. Even the general site menu does not carry any mention of posts that appear in this section. So those who find this stuff offensive are actually going out of their way to be offended and they know it.6 points

Back out this morning. Today we had the pleasure of bringing along 2 new goose hunters and it was a shoot em up day. Total take was 35 birds. Pic is of my son and me and of course my dog Waylon. It is a great reward bringing out new hunters and having them enjoy a good hunt with us.5 points

Again, totally predictable (and call me a conspiracy theorist, but likely planned or at least anticipated)outcome. A-hole sheep keep voting for those who see to strip us of our American birth rights. Just the tip of the iceberg, of what is in store for us. When will people see, their plan has nothing to do with hunting?5 points

Epilogue. I had the sika hide tanned. It was sent to Moyles. Tiny little thing. Came back nicely tanned but the tail was lost and the rest of it was quite torn up. Satisfied but not elated. Guess I'll just have to go back to MD and get another one lol.4 points

This old photo reminds me of a spot I used for hunting both Deer and Squirrels. There was a big old hollow log like the one in the picture laying on a side hill overlooking a Beech grove frequented by both Deer and Squirrels grubbing for Beechnuts. That log made a perfect blind for concealment with the big old log in front and the hill behind I could tuck in there and dry gulch game using the log for a steady rest. I used it for the last time a few years ago killing a Deer with my Marlin 44Mag, It is rotted away now, I pass by what is left of it just about every fall and it brings back some good memories. None of this will stop "straw purchases" of ammo by people able to pass a background check who want to sell it to criminals for a profit. Ammo has no serial number and cannot be distinguished from any other ammo of the same make and caliber. So criminals will still get the ammo they want by using straw purchasers that will make money doing it. This law will probably create a huge black market for ammo purchased in other states and sold face to face in NY. Ammo sellers in NY are the ones that will suffer the huge loss of revenue. NY will also suffer the loss of tax revenue from ammo sales. Another example of how dumb Democrats are.4 points

I'd say if one isn't too excited about shooting a buck that passes by on the first day they get out to hunt, then it shouldn't bother them later in the season .That's just me. It wouldn't bother me because I like to see bucks have a chance to grow. If a small buck walks by my stand during the season and I give him a pass, there is a decent chance he'll be in the same area again next year, only bigger. If someone else takes him, good for them! That's hunting and unless you own 1000 acres you have no control over that part. If someone wants the meat and takes the deer I pass, that is fine with me. Bottom line : shoot what you want and enjoy it.4 points

If I keep hand lifting and cocking this Excalibur Crossbow, so I decided to put on one of those crank cocking gizmos and stay a 98 lbs weakling LOL! It does make for more enjoyable long shooting sessions. Al3 points

I have never seen a more complacent group of people than those that enjoy and participate in the outdoor sports. I had one x member tell me this board is not the place for politics that have a direct relationship to the outdoors. If this is not the place to discuss such things where the hell do you discuss them. Some of these people stick their heads in the sand thinking all these crap laws are just going to go away, don't talk about it! Of course many were closet Democrats and so called Independents and just can not stand to be reminded of what their voting is doing to this country, so just eliminate it. As our freedoms keep crumbling away day by day they have no one to blame but themselves for not speaking up and doing something about it. Shhhhhhh! is their answer. It is a fight! Grow a pair!! Yeah, they can all suck a fat one too! I'm not paying anyone $15 or more for something that cost $2.50. All they have to do is type a few things on a computer taking less then two minutes. Wait until for some stupid reason someone fails the check and are told they have to pay a 25-30% restocking fee like with firearms.3 points
