15 to 20 feet for me.
-
Work is busy in the office. I've been taking some 60-90 foot oak trees down at my house every calm evening and weekend I can. Lot's of fun. Lucky for me I was able to use a boom lift from work. I have 4 down and 4 or 5 to go. (come get the firewood guys). Got my C.O. for my addition on xmas vacation. It never ends with the house. Almost done wiring my central air. This weekend gonna hook up some flood lights outside if I finish the trees and do a floor for a friend. (yeah right!)

I shoot a Darton Avalanche. It's only been used 1 season (by me). I wouldn't know how good it is vs other brands, but the reviews were good. Based on what I have heard, Darton is a good bow, just not as well marketed. I shot a Hoyt when I picked up all my accessories (the Darton was a gift), and I can say that the hoyt was so easy to shoot and very smooth. This was 2 seasons ago. A close friend just picked up the Hoyt Alphaburner or Alphamax??? Last season and he loves it.

Thanks guys. I thought all the higher channels were just HD versions of the lower channels.

I learned from all those articles and youtube vids. Also from my father. There's a shit-ton of things to know, but it all comes down to the bottom line -MEAT. assuming its field dressed. Start by letting it hang. Don't cut the cape to high on a nice buck if you're planning on mounting it. Be careful around the tarsals as they apparently spoil the meat. Skinning is pretty easy, jus tpull and cut away. Get a good freezer at your cabin. I'm no pro, just my .02

I have Cablevision. they only have versus and espn. I just checked and am pretty disappointed they don't have outdoor or sportsman channel. I prefer any show that has authentic hunts. Not on a "ranch" in Texas , were they take a helicopter out the day before to pick which buck to shoot ...scout. I'm not a big fan of African safari's either. I like American hunting that I can relate to.

Frank, please tell us about your bear hunts. Were you hunting for bear or just encountered some?

and a +1 for you sir. -
Some say increased coyote activity and population affected the deer herd and put a damper on the 2009 deer season. I tend to agree, anybody else? For example, I've never gone to this one spot and not seen at least one deer, whether as I arrive or down the road. In 2009 that changed. That 1st day of no sightings, I saw coyote scat, and a mile away during daylight, a coyote. What's everyones take on yotes? Who's doing there part by hunting them, and is it true that the population increases, the more you kill them off?

I grew up in northern westchester/putnam counties. Now in Dutchess county. I have 2 small local spots to hunt and my uncle's farm in southwest Albany county. I take my son fishing in the local streams and lake george area when we can make the trip. I just bought a camper trailer, so hopefully I can utilize that for more good times.

If I remember correctly, some were talking about gun ownership, a revolution, and if it ever happened they were ready. Also some talk about the state monitoring the site, and how people shouldn't incriminate themselves via posts. I believe "meatsticks" was in the know, and warning those saying too much.

I hear ya. I just updated 2 light fixtures. I've been doing tile and wood floors for 10 years. No longer full time though. I just built an addition on my house too (by myself). I've become well versed in home improvement So if anyone else has questions, feel free to ask.

I think I'm on board with using technology to become successful. Once successful ill probably revert back to simpler tactics. However, I wouldn't say my gear is state of the art LOL!

Its a little of everything. The extra challenge, the increased opportunity. Life gets in the way sometimes, so I started bowhunting for more chances in the woods. With a longer season I can now make up for a weekend lost during gun season, say because of a wedding or some dadly duties.

2 years ago there was a bear in Hillside lake. (East Fishkill- dutchess County). in albany county - partridge run, I followed some tracks in the snow. Ill get the pix up. It went across the lake and stopped by the beaver lodge. No blood in the snow, so I guess he was unsuccessful and moved on.

Ill post a link on my facebook page. Anyone else have a facebook page?

That was in Dutchess County. 1 mile SW from Taconic Pkwy and I84. Once I knew I had no shot, I figured why not try to document the behavior. He was to my right and very calm. I was looking left at the doe, then out of the corner of my eye I see movement. Go figure.

you can barely see him.

That's near Mongaup Pond and Roscoe. The NYS fish hatchery is there and stocks around there. Good trout at junction pool and the Beaverkill.
