After years / decade of owning and hunting with an A-Bolt II Stalker 'Aught 6, I finally got around to dealing with the trigger tonight. The trigger was literally a 3.5# pull, zero creep but a real hard squeeze. I figured a couple of weeks ago to poke around the Internet to see what can be done about this. I was thinking if I can shoot an inch with a really heavy pull the gun would just do better with a lighter weight trigger. Well tanks to Al Gore for inventing the Internet, I found this guys link, erniethegunsmith.com Turns out I was able to get a 1.25 pound trigger spring for my rifle for $6.00! The Browning trigger is really simple to change the spring on. It literally took longer to take the gun apart than it did to change the spring. Anyway, wow!!!! What a difference. I'm sure the gun will be much easier to shoot well now.

Safe shots is all we should be taking despite the round we are chambering.

nothing in the mail as of today.

Not a question of stirring things up and I do respect others opinions, IMO some of the responses on the thread just don't make sense, logically speaking. Its a discussion forum, and that's what we do, discuss things. For instance I think a 100 pound kid, 16 years old and boney, might flinch on a 308's or a 270 recoil, where as with the 243, 6mm, or 25-06 others wrote about there is pretty much just a make bang sound and don't have any real recoil energy at all. In my estimation there would be less of a chance of wounding an animal that might need a finisher or even worse have a long tracking job that can require a finisher near a house or a church or a school.

DRT, is all about HS Shock and disruption of organs. Running and bleeding is the wound channel. I'll take HS Shock any day.
-
So its better to give a kid or a newbie shooter something bigger to shoot???? I think that this will cause the recoil shy to anticipate a shot, flinch and now all you get is either a miss (not so bad) or a wounded animal to track. The what ifs' start from there. Give the same hunter a 243 and they will have one less thing to worry about. As far as too small, look at Fantails caped out pics above.

Gman getting through bone has little to do with bullet size. It's more about retained energy and construction. 240 Wby with 100 gr bullet will shatter a 6 yo bucks shoulder and prob still exit provided it's built heavy. So why wouldn't a stoutly constructed 243 do the same? We'd all think a 30/30 will blast through and break bone. Yet it's got less energy than a 243 and are mostly VIP and core constructed bullets.

Orange during gun and muzzle loader when I'm on the ground. For sure. I keep a vest in my pack. When I'm in my stand I stay as dark as possible. During ML season I wear a blaze camo parka that I have (Bass Pro Brand) all the time because it is warmest coat I own!

Theres a lot of things wrong with that scenario, like I said I've seen Tx Heart Shots ith 338 WM's with poor outcomes...... To me unless he sticks up his head and I can get at the back of the neck he lives. Add to that the 25 MPH crosswind, at 250 deep,.... He's likely to be a miss anyways.
-
Arm chair philosophy. I hit a deer in the liver (pulled the shot) with a muzzle loader at 60 yards. Recovered him 3.5 miles from where he was hit the next day. So there's a big bullet for you. In fact it was 2.5x more in weight than were talking about with the 243 at 3/4 less the range! DEC still carries 243 to take out lame and sick animals. I know ECONS who have take trouble bears with the 243 at better than 100 yds. One was near Plattsburgh College. He was 270 pounds on the paw.

I can tell you my model 14 shoots 100 gr Hornady Interlocks through the same hole all day long as long as I keep them around 2960 FPS out of the muzzle. That bullet has anchored many whities. I have messed with the monolithic bullets yet but will likely start to.
-
2500 FPS and 1400' pounds at 200 yds. At the velocity I think any bullet is gonna expand.

Okay fellas, a friends wife dropped off two boxes of Federal Fusions 300 Win Mag 180 gr tonight. He sold his 300 and found these in his safe. Your opinions, too much for deer?
-
I think placement and construction of the bullet have just about everything to do with it. Saw a guy Texas heart shoot a big doe once with a 338 Win Mag. Very unethical shot under 100 yds. He needed to put a finisher into her even with that freight train of a round. And that was after a 50 yard sprint she put on. I had a problem years back when Hornady was first developing the SST bullets with a 270. Also a lost deer, turns out after talking to the folks at Hornady, their early SST's were very lightly constructed. So I think if the bullet is beefy and you are gonna shoot into the boiler room (IMO the only place you should be aiming on a broadside shot), then there is little reason why a 243 wouldn't anchor a deer. I know they will because I have used them in the past myself. The big ding with a 243 is shot placement, but in the example above bad shot placement is bad results no matter what's coming out of the muzzle.

Moose, you know I'm a fan of the big 30's!!!!

time to spur it up,..... anyone with some real experience (good or bad) please write in. Bottom line is the 243 Win a reliable deer round up to 200 or 250 yards?

The system is working, I was able to get my Doe Tag this morning.

I did my first two Accutrigger adjustments last night (pretty bad thats what I'm doing on a Friday night LOL). Anyway my 300 Win 114 was pulling at 3 pounds 1 oz (factory set). I couple of minutes later and a few turns counter clockwise with the little yellow tool Savage makes and the Lyman scale said its now pulling 1 pound 5 oz. I dry fired it a few times, wow,..... what a difference. My buddy brought over his 116 (7 mm Rem Mag). Same story. His factory setting was 2 pounds 15 oz. After the same procedure and his bottomed out at 1 pound 9 oz. I guess they come off the line set higher for safety reasons. Very easy to adjust these and a for a big difference.

Good morning fellas- I put a Circle X Trophy XLT 3-9 on my TC Pro Hunter 50 cal last year. I gotta say, I really like this reticle a lot. Its very fast and easy to use. The circle gets right over the target. I was actually thinking about putting on e on a 243 Savage I have also. Anyone else use one?
-
Haven't gotten mine yet either. I'm hoping today.
-
A straight 4 x is great on a "brush gun." I do like the red dot a lot, very fast and simple.

Steve I've thought the same, but it is said to be the most popular selling center fire round other than 223. So I think that says something in and if itself. I don't know of a single gun shop that doesn't have three or more lever 30/30's for sale, with maybe one 270 on the rack. I think 06 is probably a really close second.
-
Gotta celebrate the lever action. It's an All American Original. We did it first and best. It's widely agreed that the 30/30 Winchester lever action has probably put more back straps on dinner tables than any other center fire hands down. So post them you got them. These three are a 444, and two 35 Rem 336's.
