Congrats on that kill.   I am not certain how button bucks that I have killed in my 38 seasons, but the number might be between 12 and 20.   Those included many "firsts" including my first deer with a gun, first with a bow, first during the late muzzleloader season, first from the ground with a crossbow, and first "double".   When filling dmp tags, I always target the largest deer in the group first and that has often turned out to be a button buck, especially when it is just a single deer or a pair.  I am the only hunter in our family and we get most of our protein from venison. I am not blessed with enough opportunities at antlerless deer to be real fussy about which ones I do and do not shoot at.  Oddly enough, I have never killed a doe fawn.

One thing is for sure, there are no finer eating bucks on the table.   It is always cause for great celebration, in our family, when I bring home a "fatted calf" like that.   The livers are especially good.  Hopefully you did not leave that in the gut pile.  One of the best things about button bucks, is that the meat can be processed and froze right away, without aging a while (at 32-42 deg F) for the rigor mortis to work out, as must be done with older deer unless you don't mind all the extra chewing required.

I still have (4) antlerless tags left and I am really hoping to be able to use one of them on a button buck.   I guess my regular season buck tag also turns into an either/or tag for the late ML season, so I could legally take (5) of them this year, if I still have it by then.   I will be super thankful for just one however, but I really don't expect it.  button bucks have been an "every other year" thing since my first year hunting.   The odd number years are the off ones for me and button bucks.

If anyone is heartbroken over killing one, shoot me a pm and I will gladly take it off your hands for you.

I hear you man, thanks for the post. I did take the liver and heart with me, I cant wait to get the meat back I keep hearing good things!

  2. I'm new to hunting so please forgive me for the question.

If I go deer hunting but also want to try to hunt say Turkey or squirrels or anything else with a shotgun, am I allowed to bring both guns on the deer hunt or do I need to keep one in my car and then switch them out when needed?

i took a new hunter out yesterday evening for the QDMA field to fork program. we never had a deer come in but somehow the turkeys came out out of nowhere. anywhere you looked there was a flock coming in. had half a dozen long beards and many jakes sounding off at once. had some up the hill, more in the woods behind us, and more down the hill working through the field like an invasion 5 turkeys wide. every hen or gobbler noise you can think of he heard. lol pretty foggy but got some pictures of the ones up the hill.

Enders the Adirondacks are pretty notorious for being tough hunting.

If it snows - I'd consider looking for fresh tracks and trailing a deer, continuously glassing and keeping your head up. Walking the woods with snow on the ground is a huge learning experience and you'll see that deer ignore/hardly use a large portion of the woods.

If it doesn't snow, I'd focus around a few things:

    (1) Openings in the woods i.e. fields or cutover (2) "edges" where thick woods open up to thinner woods, or pines break to hardwoods (3) walking ridges - moving very slowly - so that you can at least get a chance to see a deer and potentially have a shot at one

This book is very good for learning to hunt large tracts of woods, and identifying areas with higher probabilities of seeing deer.

Wow great tips man i would have sat in the snow haha

Don't want to burst your bubble about potentially hunting the Adirondacks, but I would never recommend going there if you are a new hunter.  Deer numbers are always low, and this year seems worse than normal after last year's harsh winter.

I would suggest that if you are willing to travel the 4+ hours to go to the Adirondacks that maybe you try some public land in western NY.  Much better deer numbers out that way.

I saw this message  late, I literally booked a airbnb cabin to hunt in the next few days. I’ll make the best of it I guess.

I don't specifically Turkey hunt, but if the opportunity presented itself while bowhunting (during the season of course) I would take a shot. I have not seen any turkeys this year while on stand.

If you PM me, I will tell you spots where I have seen turkeys on state land most frequently while bowhunting, but they are all over the place.

Are you hunting rifle/shotgun or are you also hunting bow? Are you hunting out of a treestand? Can you hunt weekdays or weekends only?

I'm currently visiting my GF in NYC for a few months, but lived here before for ~10 years and have hunted North Jersey and Westchester a good bit but only bow/crossbow. The NYC regulations are too wild for me to consider bringing a gun here. I may do a hunt or two in a gun legal area post Thanksgiving - PM me if you would be interested.

    Some Tips:

Wear some hunter orange if you're on public land during a gun hunt.

Get further from the city if you can. Areas that get run over at the beginning of gun season get tougher to hunt after the first week of gun season in my view. You being in bronx will help the drive.

If you get a chance at a deer and have the tag go ahead and take it even if it isn't a "trophy". Mountable class public land bucks don't come around that often.

Use a topographic map and google map aerials to pre-scout the area you are hunting. If you don't know much about reading topos for deer I recommend "Mapping Trophy Bucks".  MyTopo has free good maps

First time on a piece of land if hunting (gun hunting) without having ever scouted I'd get to the woods very early for an afternoon hunt. Take some time walking ridges or trails slowly looking for deer sign. As it starts getting late try to position yourself near acorns that have deer droppings in them within viewing distance of thick cover. Having an elevated vantage point so even if you don't have a shot you may see deer and learn something.

If you can, after the season going along with someone who is scouting will teach you much faster than going on a hunt with someone. Generally in season people are just trying to slip in and out of pre-scouted spots.

Hey great tips! Im currently at sterling forest trying my luck, scouted the last two days and found a spot I liked unfortunately this morning a hunter was in the area so I ended up walking a trail and just sitting in a random spot. I’ll PM you for a hunt if possible. Thanks for the tips

Welcome to the board! I’m a 3S Bowhunter who hunts very small pockets of Westchester lands and in a deer management program so unfortunately cant “share” any space. However I’d happily give you a hand with the field dressing/butchering when you are successful depending on where you end up harvesting one.
If you hang around the dinner thread at all you’ll see some familiar place (Full moon, Borgattis, casa de moss...etc). Love Arthur ave
Is Olinville Arms still open on Westchester Ave? They may be able to hook you up with a mentor(think retired cop/hunter).

They sure are, I was just there a few days ago. No worries I know hunters don't generally like to give up their spots haha. I've been looking at public lands ill prob try it soon

I had a relative who was a police officer and avid hunter. He told me once something to the effect of ..... "You would be surprised the amount of people that let me hunt their land. I roll up in my cruiser, dressed in my cop uniform and ask permission. More often than not, I get permission."   I'm just across the Hudson from NYC.  I hunt CNY though so cant give you any great spots locally. I do want to link up with ATBuckhunter though for ducks/geese on LI one day. Ever think about waterfowl??

absolutely I have a passion for hunting in general so anything is good in my book. I've actually hunted for dove before in the Dominican Republic. unfortunately the NYPD wont give me a take home car haha

  11. I live in the Bronx, just picked up hunting. I put a post on deer hunting sub section and thought i'd swing in here and say hello. I don't have a hunting partner or anyone to mentor me, if you're interested in teaching me the ropes of hunting in New York shoot me a dm. I've only hunted for doves before in the Dominican Republic which is where I am from. Other than that I have zero experience with hunting.

Welcome Enders good info on this. I wish you reached out on Thursday before opening day.  I live on Long Island and have a cabin in the Catskills. Went up with 3 other hunters and had a mountain and a half to ourselves. 2 of the guys have been hunting for over 40 years. They are fathering type. If I wasn't going up next weekend with my wife for Thanksgiving Id have you up. First thing to do is sight in you rifle. Get used to it and see it's capability. Theirs a good range on eastern LI in Calverton. Its run by the town and the range officers are good teachers. If your rifle is a shotgun then go to NYDEC. Opening day on LI is January 4. Follow the instructions for hunting on LI as it's close to you. Good luck and stay in touch

awesome man, I sighted in at 100 yards yesterday shooting some good groups I was happy with. Good luck on your next hunt!
