  1. Good luck and hopefully you won't let them change her into a crying liberal protester. they will try believe me. When I was there and the professors found out I was a card carrying NBA hunter shooter they would try and get under my skin. Instead I worked twice as hard and got out with high grades.
  2. That is my biggest fear. this week I am walking on egg shells with suit of armour on. Good luck quick recovery
  3. So I need an opinion. I got a Go Pro and mounted it to my gun. After opening day and my gun not working. I wanted proof of what I see. My wife thinks I am nuts for wanting to capture the shoot if I am lucky. am I wrong? or psycho?
  4. In 4P last Saturday I actually saw a 10 pt mount a doe. the first 15 seconds I was watching going I can't believe I am seeing this. the next 30 I felt like a perv. Yesterday I was in my stand scoping and saw the 10 and nice 8 about 10 minutes apart walking the same trail. I grunted and used antlers and they neve stopped or raise their heads. they kept walking fast in the same direction. On my camera from Thursday night and Friday morning I have a 5 and spike either fighting or playing can't tell and no one ran away. I love those video cameras. I can't get back soon enough. can't wait till Friday and then Saturday morning opening day. Now I have 2 neighbors putting tree stands right next to my property lines. But I can't complain I just my 10 point from last year on the wall this weekend
  5. Sorry just realized I hijacked your post. Very nice mount. Did you get it on LI? If so where
  6. I am waiting for the call too. Any day now. Mine is up in the Catskills
  7. I had the same problem. I can't remember where I bought it from. It came with the bendex gear and starter. To fix it is easy you have to jiggle it a little and it goes right in.
  8. Has a one ever bought from them? Does anyone know if anyone bought from them? Looking to get feed back on their products. Looking to get a few apple trees bushes and a fast growing oak tree. Let me know thanks
  9. Grow a lot I was hoping you would respond.thanks for the ideas. thphtm thanks for the info. I won't be planting until spring. I am a planing type person. I know my wife will find my extra cash. I think she can smell it. But telling her about my plan of bigger and better feeding areas is an easier sell. If I come home with another gun she'll come home with more shoes and a pocketbook. Like we need more of that
  10. OK I can across a little extra money my wife doesn't know about but she will find out sooner or later. I have 2 spots that will be ready for food plots so that covered ad wife approved. I went to Moorse nursery and thinking about a few food trees. I just picked up about 50 4' evergreen trees from all of the Christmas tree sellers that didn't sell. Next is the food trees. What should I get? A few apples, oak what?? the ground is pH neutral and amend the area cut trees where needed etc. I have 25 acres at 2100' facing south by southeast. Let me know your thoughts. I want plan now and be ready for spring Thanks
  11. Funny how you got so close to him. I think the deer are getting use to people in the woods for various reasons hiking biking quading etc. 20 years ago you would have seen him running at 100 yards and never looking back. Save him for next year
  12. Here is what I can say from my area and who I spoke with. I am in 4P by Stamford but 4 miles from 4O. I scout from July on. I was seeing a dozen doe and 3 bucks at times up to 2 weeks before opening gun a day I saw a 6,5,4 and a very young spike. 2 weeks before opening day I saw my white whale a sick 10. But that is later. I made the decision that I would only take this year and regardless leave the rest to build a herd. I was up for opening week until after thanksgiving. On opening day which 25 degrees my white whale came within 50 yards but my gun jambed 3 times. What I observed through the scope of my gun was my 10 a 4 and 2 doe all together following my neighbor on his quad never seeing him just listenin until he stopped and walked in the other direction. I could see their heads all turning in unison. The next morning 30 degrees out and only saw a few doe. Speaking to my dairy farmer neighbor who owns 600 acres mixed with pasture and woods said he saw the same deer in the same areas never once crossing the property. He called it "Pocketing". The rest of the week it use kept getting warmer and all my usual doe were just getting less and less during the week as the weather got warmer. On Tuesday morning at 7:15 am I heard coyotes in the mountains around my location and didn't see anything for 36 hours. It just dried up instsntly . On Wednesday night I heard the coyotes about 2 plus miles away. Thanksgiving morning saw 4 doe again. The rest of the week a few doe and the very young spike buck that could be a doe with spikes. Left on saturday. The following week got back up in the woods on Saturday morning. The temp was 35 and saw nothing. Come back out at 9:15 and did some chores. Load chores like throwing logs into a wheel borrow. That's when I saw my white whale about 150 to 200 yards into the woods. Just walking without a care in the world. That long story basically I got him. The big 10. The next person I speak to is the deer processor. He got a deer but as of today this his lowest butchering number to date. Only 208 total deer. Last year was the lowest he thought at 256. What he noticed was the following less bucks but a little older and higher points. More doe but smaller. His thoughts were people were nervous about shooting until a legal buck was positively IDed. Most got away or not seen at all. But they will be smarter next year and even tougher to get. For the doe his thoughts were the first doe seen was taken. Nothing selective about it. Youth hunt over all was not that major as most kids are not into hunting but video games. I agree with that statement. When I hit 14 small game hunting was on and I grabbed my hunting mentor and kepted him moving. Long story short (Too late) I think all of the reasoning in the first post are playing a part in the lack of deer. Weather, some pressure, coyotes etc. But after this year I think our tactics need to change as deer are getting smarter. Why? Because more people are hitting the woods more (not hunters) mountain bikers, more quads hikers etc. Back in the day you would jump a deer from 100 yards away and they would never look back. Now a deer will lay down or not move until you are almost stepping on them. We need more hunters and more drives to get them moving. This is what I see and hear in my area. We need to get more hunters in the woods on private lands.
  13. I will be scouting my gut pile tomorrow morning before I go to the butcher
  14. Thanks. That was him a week before opening day. He was 10' and not scared of me
  15. So I came up again this weekend to pick up my snowmobile and hunt a other weekend. I didn't see anything this morning. Got the snowmobile this morning put it in the garage and decided to load the wood ring. A neighbor stopped by on his old 89 quad. I heard him puttering up the trail. He lives about 1/4 mile away from me and between us is swamp and thick trees that you can't even walk through As we are talking I see movement deep in the woods. I tell him turn around and look their is a deer walking right there walking in the woods. I tell him I think it has antlers. I wasn't going to look any further. I said to him you know what I am going to grab my gun and circle around the woods on my quad see what that is. I was gone. I got off the quad and start walking towards my tree stand to where i think the deer will be going to be. As I am walking down my towards my tree stand I can see the deer out of the corner of my eye at 75 yards looking straight at me stock still. I duck behind a tree adjust my scope from 3 to 9 to confirm its not a big doe. Well there he was. He is the same deer that walked within 10' of me a week before opening day and same guy that I had in my sites on opening day and my gun didn't shoot. It was dirty. 1 shot it was over and good thing he ran 2 steps and dropped. DONE. When I tried to shoot a location shot for my neighbor to find me the gun again just clicked. Not the best hunting story. I do wish I did get him from my hunting stand but I look at it this way. 1-he walked with in 10' of me week before opening day 2-I had him in my sites on opening day and gun didn't work 3- I came back again for another weekend 4- he was shot right in the middle of my small property The last picture is him the week before opening day walking 10' from me. He is the king of our mountain area. I said a prayer and thank God and the deer. For a safe and rewarding season. I spend a lot of weekends scouting looking etc. He will be mounted. He is 205 lbs after field dressed.
  16. If possible get out way before sunrise and go to the last area you saw a major blood trail and listen for a while. If you hear yotes game could be over but it may be possible they are running it down.
  17. Very quite in my area of 4P. I had a 10 point walk 50 to 60 yards from me broadside. My gun just clicked the first 3 times before he zeroed in on me as it let the last bolt slide into the tube. And again click. He was gone. I didn't clean it after siteing in in September. Moral of the story always keep your gun clean. Never know when you will need it. Going back to the same place just a little earlier. Not at 1 that's for sure ???? may it was quite because hunters are waiting for the right shot or that one deer. I know the antler regs here are producing some big racks. Good luck and stay safe
  18. I was scouting out in the back 40 this weekend. Yesterday 25 and a 20 mph steady wind at 7:00am and it was cold. But i saw 4 does. Today was 35 at 7:00 and 42 by 9. It was like spring with no wind but only 1/2 a deer. To deep in the woods to make out what it was. Just saw it's but. At least it's tail was not waving while it was disappearing running away from me.
  19. My first was a spike too. Valuable lessons all around for you your son and the rest of us. Now go get that mounted for him. He will keep it for a life time. These are the good things he will remember for rest of his life. Everyone remembers their firsts ????
  20. Hunterdan44 I have a couple of 5 and 6 points running with the does. They are nudging the does but they don't seem ready. I encountered a 12 today at 9' from me and he never picked up his head. A doe in the pack must be hot enough to roast walnuts on her loins. They are ready to pop ny day. So far I have seen 4 bucks (5,6,6,12) 3 of them following following does or at least hanging with doe herd waiting for their shot at the prize. I hope they are in full swing on opening day. The good part has been watching them interact and seeing bucks during the day
  21. I wish I took a few more but I was afraid to move. Plus my said less then 20% power. If it failed no one would ever believe me. I hope we can meet up in 2 weeks and get real close again ????
  22. OK I am a flat lander and almost every weekend I go up to the cabin in the woods from LI. This morning I go out to my tree stand that over looks my opening day stand where I will go it's about 150 to 200 yards away. With binoculars you can see the difference between does and bucks but can't see exactly how points. So I am in the stand at first light and see a few does eating in a moss field with the 2 bucks I have been watching since August. By 8 the show is over and they have gone up into the mountains. I decide to walk down and check my cameras. That is what this flat lander always does. As I walk I hear something less them 25' from my side. I peak over the bushes their he was a 12 pointer. His head is down sniffing. He never looks up. WHAT DO YOU DO!! I hit the deck I can hear him walking closer about to enter the trail am on. 20' 15' CRAP he is going to see me smell me a run away forever never to be seen in daylight again Think fast I lay on the ground like a log grab my iPhone get the camera ready because no one will ever believe this. As I am laying there he hits the trail 9' from me looking at me but sniffing the ground. I could see the morning dew on his nose. I am thinking he is going to run right in to me. He just kept walking looking at me as I looked at him. I was to afraid to move he turns a little snap a picture he keeps going. He walks up the hill behind me and every once and a while looks back at me. I try to stay behind a tree between us peeking around the side he looks see me but keeps walking knowing he is the king in this area. Finally he walks pass my stand that I will be in on opening day. I swear on my life, my guns my right to bear arms and become a Democrat anti if this is not a true story Oh here he is. I will not be touching the 5 or 6 they can live on until next year. Here is my white whale
  23. I just got back from 4P. OK yesterday driving into the woods on the quad and 6 point was walking nose down walking up a hill where it's think and I think a bedding area. He never ran but walked faster as I was getting closer and disappeared. I get to one of ground blind areas to watch for does as I do from August until opening day. No does to see but a 1/2 hour later his brother the 5 point was walking along a rock wall nose to the ground. He never looked up. On my cameras a lot of does moving at night with bucks hanging around them but still eating with the does. Not chasing yet. Today different story the 5 and 6 were hanging with the girls and sticking the noses in funny places. They are about to pop. I am 3 miles from 4.0
