The nice thing about metal buildings is that they are essentially maintenance free.   I used to keep all of my “stuff” on a couple old timber-framed 36 x 46 x 16 barns that my great great grandad built in the 1880’s.

I imagine that the Amish built wood barns of today are similar, but probably don’t use American chestnut as the primary material, like the old ones did.

Another thing I don’t miss about those old barns, was all the dust that built up on everything stored inside because wind could blow right thru the gaps in the siding boards.  A boat, stored inside thru the winter would have 1/16” of dust in it in the spring.  Now, my boat comes out of my metal pole barn in the spring just as clean as it was when it went in in the fall.

The wood does have a more comfortable “feel” inside though.  I was able to recreate that, with shops and a loft, inside my new metal building using “free” materials recovered from the two old barns that I demo’d.

Stockade is very thorough in protecting their stuff during transport.  Each bundle of gray steel was protected by a same gauge sheet of green.  I used those, and more recovered materials (post and beams, rafters, etc) to add a 7 x 25 lean -to woodshed on the back of the back porch.

    THANK YOU!!

  2. Hey All,

Does anyone have recommendations for companies for prefab metal pole barns? Was looking at buying land and starting with that with the possibility of taking a section for a small bunk area. Want to store ATV, tractor and boat in there and also have a butchering station for deer so think something somewhat large. Was curious if anyone did this before. Thanks in advance.

Bought my lifetime the year they raised it . Sportsmans was $500. I still buy my archery and muzzleloader. Still get my free dmp. Long since payed for itself .

How are you guys getting the free DMP, I feel like they charge me for it each year when I enter my choices even though I have the lifetime.

Brush up on a preferred  knot for leader attachment .  Nothing worse than leader to fly line  parting ways out in the middle of nowhere. If your a true beginner  that is the hardest knot . Dont count on the damn slinky loop. Been there done that .

I have a 4 piece rod tube that holds the rod with reel attached . That's what I use to hike in . If theres a chance of slip and fall over rugged ground a seperate tube and a reel pouch buried  deep in the pack is probably  a more protective  way to go  .

One decent size box with nymphs, streamers , generic dry . 2 leaders  one up and one down size tippet. Strike indicator  clippers forceps  floatant... small split shot . Insect repellent  of choice and or a preferred cigar.

    Good luck ... pictures please.

    Good call on the cigar!!!

My pleasure. Lots of stuff you can add in if it's a fishing-first trip, but you really don't need much if you're just casting for a few hours a day.

    Or tenkara.

Yea I am kinda winging it. First time fly fishing so have my set up ready and going to learn. May want to break up the day a little and hike or just relax at camp. Should be fun regardless.

I assume you're fishing for trout.

From someone who used to carry a shit ton of stuff with me, I now have it down to a few pockets or sling if I feel I need some extra.

Rod, reel, two new leaders 9' 3x (will handle any streamer), one small spool of 5x tippet (will take care of any dry), nippers, hemostats, ten flies (you can add more), floatant, magnifying glasses.

The rod tube gets strapped to the outside of the pack, everything else goes into a small bag.

Yes was going to give a go at trout.....this was helpful thank you!

  7. Hey All,

How do you all pack in you back country fly fishing gear, and what do you consider must haves to bring. Planning a camping trip and bringing my fly rod, but don't want to bring in overkill. What case/tube do you use to bring in your gear with? Thanks in advance.

    Catskills? Adirondacks? So many choices

Most likely Catskills as I think that is closer then the ADK. I've done a weekend trip up there and it's a pretty far drive so trying to stay within 2 hrs of the city. I know it's not as nice and more crowded but my time is limited.

  9. Hey All,

Anyone have any suggestions for an overnight backpacking trip within a 2-3 hr drive of NYC where I can do a little fishing also. Doesn’t have to be a crazy hike in but looking to get away from crowds and have a nice peaceful trip and do some fishing and camping.

  10. Hey All,

I have a limb driven rest currently which I haven't been happy with. My bow is a hunting setup, and was seeing if you guys have recommendations for a drop away rest. I have used QAD in the past but open to other suggestions.

That would go against everything the movement stands for. They are not trying to incite violence or theft. That is likely someone pretending to be from BLM in order to create havoc.

Regardless of who created it, I have LEO friends who were deployed to where this is supposed to begin and folks were already assembling. Was also told certain businesses were being targeted for arson.

Your right about the hoppers I bought them because I thought they looked cool, same thing with the muddler minnow I just liked the name.Unfortunately there's no fly shops here on long island and the way the mails been lately I won't get them in time.I'm going to call the shop up by me and see if they"ll hook me up with those flies you mentioned. Thanks again for the help.

You can try Orvis when it opens back up. With all this extra time I was going to give it a shot as well. Something I always wanted to learn and heard there are some decent spots on the island to fish.
