Good luck.....dmandoes.......my muzzy is all set up for white tail with the scope and I know you can't use a scope out there. I may give archery a shot and if all goes well try my hand at muzzy next season. This will definitely be a learning experience.

Dmandoes, The reason why I didn't submit yet is I was thinking of doing my research and then going the OTC route when they went on sale July 26th I believe. I probably should buy a point as well just to start accumulating them. I have 1 elk and 1 antelope point currently in WY but nothing in CO. As far as time I am really open to anything that was another reason I was trying to go the OTC route so if I could find someone to come with I could work around that. The reason I was thinking archery, is less hunters so more for me to bumble around and not step on toes, as well as the weather being more forgiving as I plan on camping out. Thanks for any advice you can offer. Its much appreciated.

I am in my early 30's and in great shape. My goal is to make this a DIY pack hunt and pack in and pack everything out. I would love to go with someone else, but I think this may wind up being a solo mission as all my hunting buddies either don't have the time or aren't to keen on the idea. I wouldn't mind bouncing around glassing some times and then doing some calling. Really looking for a good unit for a newbie to make mistakes and learn. I did join huntin fool, but found that forum not to be to friendly for beginners. I have done a lot of reading and am trying to find units on my own, but still trying to find people that have done it before and can lend some words of wisdom.

Has anyone here ever done an OTC Elk hunt in Colorado? Looking for some advice on what units to look into. This will be a learning experience as I am going to try making this a backpacking trip, so I am leaning towards an archery tag this way the weather is a little more forgiving. Even though I will most likely come home empty handed, it will be more about the experience. Trying to find a unit where I can get an either sex tag to increase my chances. Any advice would be appreciated.

Not sure if it will be the season, but I heard Coues deer is a great hunt.....The Grey Ghost.

Hey All, I am looking to start practicing long range bow shooting, not to hunt taking 70 yard shots, but practicing at longer distances will help make me more accurate at closer ranges. I am looking for a high quality sight with 6-7 pins. Can anyone recommend a sight that they feel is very accurate and holds a zero well. Thanks! BK

Instead of killing myself in one day trimming all the meat perfectly before packing it, I was thinking of leaving the things like silver skin and a little fat on the meat. I can either trim it when it thaws or I am also thinking of aging the meat in the fridge for a week before eating it after it thaws. I would thinks not trimming it perfectly after the kill would protect the meat and lead to lest waste when I trim it after it ages in the fridge. what are everyones thoughts here?

most looking for a 10/22 never really considered the 77/22 until a poster put it in my head lol.......Most likely going to go with the 10/22 and I think a ruger as I do love the one I have. I am just looking for one that I can beat on and not worry about. Still deciding if I want to put a scope on or leave it with iron sites.

I have a ruger 22 which is one of my favorite guns. It's a nice wood stock with a stainless steel barrel and receiver. I don't like taking it hunting for the sole fact I don't want to ding it and scratch it up. If you have to buy a 22 for its sole purpose to be a work horse hunting gun which one would you recommend?

I cut the tongue out of my deer this year. Hopefully I can add to that this weekend during muzzle. I plan on corning them and giving it a try with some spicy mustard. Not sure I would ever save the nuts from my deer but I would try rocky mountain oysters at least once. I plan on giving the kidneys a whirl......heard they are really good.

I buy the Costco brand whole beans which is roasted by Starbucks. It's $10 for either a 1 or 2 pound bag and I grind it fresh every morning. Great deal and great flavor. The Starbucks beans are better but this the Costco brand is a great balance of quality and price.

Wanna hear my story about being 33 and never hunting before?
BKhunter replied to Rockspek's topic in Deer Hunting
Yea that is definitely a wall hanger. Well done you had a better season than a lot of us who have been doing this for years. One thing you learn about hunting is it can be the most frustrating but most rewarding activity ever. Congrats on the great first season. -
We hunted yesterday in spots we always see deer. Saw a few but no shooters note even the does. When we went to head back 8 of them were laying down in the cut bean field just hanging out in broad day light in the wide open. That I can't explain as that has never happened. This has been one weird season.

I try to get out every weekend.....I live in the city so that is the only time I can go and like to hunt every season and as much as possible if I tag out nothing I can do about that, but I plan on being out there for muzzle. Maybe a few trips up for small game after the deer season until the end of Feb.

I'm happy I'm not seeing them I hunted those things down in FL last year and headed back this year for another hunt. Those things are nasty and can cause some serious damage to both you and the landscape.

Unfortunately I live in NYC and unless I become mayor will never get my CC.

Made venison bolognese with tomatoes from this summers garden.........WOW.

I have shot deer minutes apart from the same stand (last weekend of the season used both my buck and dmp). Also I don't think the smell if blood and guts deters them. I think its more living foreign scent. I do everything from pee off the stand to shoot coyotes. Only time I have seen it affect them is when they catch my actual odor.

Looks like an awesome trip. I'm trying to start planning DIY hunts out west and trying to make it an annual thing. Last year I bought an antelope and elk point for WY and plan on buying more states and game this year. Hopefully I can make my first trip in 2017 as I have a lot of reading and planning to do. Also need to find some companions to join me as some of these beasts will not be fun to pack out solo. Congrats on a job well done.

I can definitely agree this is a problem in LI. I am from the City and have no interest in hunting LI because I heard you take one step into the woods and are covered in ticks. If there was no tick issue I would take part in the extended late season they have there that runs into January, but you can keep the ticks.
