Lawdwaz yes I am apologies for the confusion. I am grounding my own venison and casing it myself. It was retaining a ton of blood causing the casing to become mushy and chewy and I was packing them pretty full.

I created a post last year about my homemade sausage not having the snap that store bought sausage has. it wasn't until this week when I took out a package of loose packed sausage and when i was forming patties the blood was dripping intensely when I was forming the patties. I now know the reason why my sausage doesn't have that snap is because it was retaining a lot of the blood and moisture. I tend to butcher my deer within a day or two of harvesting the animal. I am not sure if this is the reason. Any tips on how to solve this problem?

So I had a package of loose packed sausage that I used last night and while browning it I notice a ton of liquid coming off the meat. Also, the left over that I did not brown I shaped into patties to cook today for dinner. While forming the patties a whole lot of blood and liquid came pouring out. I believe the meat is just retaining to much blood before I case my sausage and that it was is causing my sausage to not have that desired snap. Does anyone have any idea how to prevent this? Do I need to age the meat whole or do I need to let it sit once I grind it? Thanks for any tips.

I've heard people saying to use a crow or owl call to locate turkeys. I have never used this method and am probable missing out on opportunities by not using them, but I rather have an idea of what I am doing prior to messing up a hunt. If you use these methods, which do you prefer, and when do you use them? Thanks for the advise.

I appreciate all the input. They reason I was looking at the 270 was specifically the Ruger bolt action with wood stock and blued steel barrel. I just really wanted a nice wood stock white tail rifle. My 30-06 is a weatherby with a black synthetic stock which I love. I beat the hell out of it and it has never given me an issue. I have been hunting with it for the past decade and I love the rifle. I just really wanted a nice wood grain bolt action hunting rifle.

I have a 30-06 but have the itch to get a Ruger 270. What is everyone's thoughts on this. Should I scratch the itch or should I not be impulsive since the 06 does the same job for the most part?

Thanks Mike. When you say a little further away then normal do you think 20 yards is the right distance? And based off of the picture that Wax posted above, would you place them off and particular top of the you or both sides (I guess depending on wind?) or would you place them outside of the tops of the U?

Thanks all for the advise. Space is very limited for me so storage is definitely something I need to keep in mind when purchasing a transporting gear. The sillosocks seem appealing for the storage aspect. I do plan on getting some full bodies but need to figure out the storage situation. The robo duck idea is a good tip as well. Mike any idea how to place them in the spread? Thanks again to all for the tips. This thread has been the most helpful one so far for me.

Wax, Thanks for the info. That was all very helpful. I bought a book on duck and goose hunting as well as the identification book that Mike talks about above as well. I went duck hunting down in FL for the first time in January and its all I can think about. Where I hunt in the Hudson valley is on a farm full of corn fields and I always see Canadians flying over and landing in the fields when I am sitting in my deer stand. I'm hoping to hammer em this upcoming season. Looking forward to learning and hunting.

Wax, Thanks for the input, it was very helpful. Can you go into more detail on what you mean by flag at the tips and tails? Also, have you ever used sillo sock decoys? I was reading about them recently and they seem very reasonably priced. When you say U pattern, I assume that s the shape, and I want to put my blind facing the bottom of the U? I assume that is where the geese would like to land correct? How many yards of space do you suggest. Thanks again.

Where we hunt in the Hudson valley there are tons of corn fields and I always see doves while walking to the stands. Always wanted to hunt them but there is no season in NY. I also see it as a great chance to practice wing shooting. I hope Mike's hard work pays off and we get a season. I tried taking the survey but it was closed by the time I saw the link.

Hey All, As stated in a few other posts, I am trying to get into waterfowl hunting. I think my best shot is to start going after Canadian geese as where we white tail hunt we have large corn fields all over the property and I constantly see geese there during the season feeding after the corn as been cut. I plan on buying a ground blind and some decoys. Can anyone recommend how man decoys I should start with and what kind (As they are pretty pricey) and also how to set them up. Any other tips are much appreciated. Thanks in advance. BK

It was by okeechobee the hog place we actually duck hunted in lake okeechobee. Prices weren't bad I paid about 400 for both but that was subsidized slightly by my cousins company not by much though. The land actually raises cattle so there was a fence but it was only 3 feet tall and the hogs have burrows dug all around so it's all fair chase. We used dogs and the buggy that was discussed above it was different but a lot of fun and a cool experience. We're gonna go again next year and do some quail and dove along with the hogs and ducks. I have read many books on white tail hunting that were very informative and not a lengthy advertisement. Can anyone recommend a book for duck and geese hunting for a newbie?

Went duck hunting for the first time this weekend and am hooked. Can anyone recommend any waterfowl clubs either in Westchester, Hudson Valley, Catskills or Long Island (Close to the City). Primarily would like to hunt fresh water and not salt. Thanks.

So I was down in Florida this weekend to visit my cousin and we planned to do some duck and hog hunting. The hog hunting was awesome and I had a great time but the best thing was the duck hunting. I am instantly hooked and plan on doing a lot more of it next season. The only problem is I have no clue where to go, or what to do on my own. Can anyone lend a little insight and suggestions? I am located down in the city and usually deer hunt up in the Hudson Valley. Ideally I would like to hunt on ponds or lakes but not sure where this is possible so any places to find public water spots is appreciated. I don't know if I am to intrigued on hunting the salt water areas as I heard the salt will destroy your guns and gear. Also can anyone recommend any good books to read. Thanks again for any help that can be offered.

Went rabbit hunting this weekend at my buddies farm. We don't have dogs so we just walked the property trying to spot some bunnies walking by thick bushes, blow downs and the edges of fields. We pushed up one bunny and it made our day eventful, but we swung and missed. Can anyone lend any tips or tactics when rabbit without dogs?

I haven't read his Guide to Haute Cuisine. When I went to order it, it was $45 or more. Was it any good? He is writing another book/cookbook now which hopefully will be out within a year.
