  1. I tore my labrum in the shoulder i draw back on my bow with pretty bad.....had to have 5 anchors put in and bone chips fished out.....Hurt like hell pull back but put the surgery off until after the season....couldn't bare to miss a fall in the woods.....Give it a go and see how you fare.....I would bring a buddy along though incase you get one and need help dragging it out. Donate some meat to the cause.
  2. Personally I think they are asking good questions. I personally would like to see a comments section so you can explain your stance. I personally do not take small antlered deer anymore as I have been fortunate to get DMP tags every year and would rather take a doe than a small buck. I will say this though, I do love vension and it came down to it and I did not see any deer all year and fork horn walked passed me while the sun was setting on the last day of the season I would not hesitate to drop him and fill my tag. I hunt during bow season, regular firearm season as well as muzzle loader season. I have plenty of opportunities to harvest does for the meat and that is what I generally do this way I can be selective with my bucks. I will say this as far as AR's go, my first deer was a cow spike on my bow and I will never forget that moment. If AR's were in place that memory would not exists, so this is a catch 22 in my book and will always be strongly debated from both view points. If I had to lean one way I guess I wouldn't mind seeing larger bucks and more of them so I guess I would be in favor of them enacting AR's and understand the point of this survey.
  3. I received another DMP in the mail last week for the same zone that I already got approved for when licenses went on sale. Two DMP's for the same zone this year.....I see a lot of sausage and Jerky in my future.
  4. I just applied for mine down here in NYC about a week ago. Looks like I have a long road ahead of me until I find out the verdict. Great.
  5. Was hearing that people have spotted mountain lions in Colombia county.... Anyone hear this as well or do the people telling the story need to get a new set of glasses??? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  6. 8 does two fawns.... Two of them within 20 yards.... Waiting for something with some size.... Great morning to be out... Temps cooled down a bit Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  7. Hey Culver, Do you have the name when i click the link the page doesn't load
  8. Make sure the fridge is full of beer for your return
  9. Took the words out of my mouth lol
  10. Wow!! I hope you get him. That would make a great rug and meat in the freezer for a longgggg time.
  11. Does anyone know of any seminars like this in the Southern Tier? I live in the city and hunt up in Colombia county and would like to attend something like this?
  12. Unfortunatly I live down in the City so I only get the chance to hunt on the weekends. The travel and lack of sleep last year defenitley took a tool but I love being out in the woods so it is a give an take. This weekend was way to hot for my likeing but due to weddings and family obligations I had to get out there since I am going to be missing 3 weekends of the remaining bow season so i need to take advantage of every weekend I can get up. Hopefully I can hunt the gun season hard and make up for the lost bow season that I am seeing in my future.
  13. Saw 4 this morning and about 7-8 does tonight. Some were coming in and out of the thick brush so could calculate the exact number 2 were broadside at 20 yards waking dead but right now I like leaving the does around until the rut so there are more of them for the bucks to chase.... Just really nice ring back out. Can't wait to get back out tomorrow morning.... Hopefully some horns already!!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  14. The property we hunt used to be half corn and soy bean fields and half cow pasture with hard woods breaking up the lots. This year the cow pasture was now planted with corn. This leads me to believe the deer just got a whole lot more area to hide in until it's cut. Would you look at this as a positive or a negative? I am set up in a stand of hard woods 50 yards in from the corn in between their bedding area. Hope I picked the right spot as I have no idea how to tackle the property this year with this curve ball. 15. First day in for the season and pumped. After about a mile hike in I was drenched but nice to finally be in the stand. Kinda to hot for my liking though. Good luck to everyone today. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  16. I live in the city so even before this they made it near impossible, time consuming and expensive to even apply. The hoops that you have to jump through just to submit an application discouraged me enough that I didn't even attempt it. I would love to go fo my permit to bring a side arm with me while hunting as well as keep in my house for protection. It's amazing how hard it is for law abiding citizens to purchase a fire arm in this state but how easy it is if you wanted to go the illegal route. And they just keep piling the laws on. Remind me again how crimals follow the law?!?!?!?!
  17. I have take a number off deer in my day and last year was the first year i decided to sample the heart. Dusted it in flour with some salt & pepper, browned it in butter then added some garlic, red wine and some rosemary,,,,,,WOW really good 1. Gut it right away get the meat as cool as possible as quick as possible 2. No Clue 3. I butcher all my own deer unless I am straped for time. I feel I cut the cuts I want and there is a sense of pride doing it yourself. When I first started out I sent my first deer to a butcher. Its amazing how much more back strap I have now per deer now that I butcher it myslef...hmmmm coincidence I think not!!! I would like to learn how to do a better job though since I am not a pro. Guess I gotta watch a few more youtube videos and take a class or two but I feel I do myslef justice. Good luck hope you score a good one!
  18. Personally where we hunt we only take a buck if its six points or better. If they are small 6's we let them live another day as well. I personally wind up getting does usually most years as I am picky on the bucks I will take. I will say that we do not see a lot of monster bucks since the properties around us don't operate like we do. It would be nice to see more big bucks running around in my opinion. I hunt for the meat but it is nice to be able to get a memorible deer here and there. I will say this though, my first deer ever was a cow horn spike which I took on my bow and I had no quams drawing back on him and letting one fly. I am happy there were no AR when I harvested that animal as it gave me a lasting memory. Since then I did take a few more smaller bucks, but not I really only hunt for the meat and large antlers. I like to think that I have seen our population by the property we hunt improve slightly since we enacted hunting like this. Like I said before, I'm all for seeing more and more larger bucks running around anyway I can get it.
  19. After one shoulder surgery and then dislocating the other one I have packed on a few pounds since I was not able to excersise the way I normally do. Now that I am healed I am trying to get back into it. Thank god I'm doing this now becuase the lack of activity over the past year has left me really sore now that I'm back at the gym. Hopefully I can snap back by the opener so I'm not hobiling all over the woods. That will be itneresting if I need to drag a deer out. Been doing a lot of cardio and weight lifting getting myself ready.,
  20. growalot..... Thanks for the update. I can thing of some great places to place these trail plots and also some other good locations to plant plots back in the woods as a staging area before the deer head out into the open fields. This has been really helpfull. Looking foward to next year when I can set the plots up properly using this info. This year I threw some instant grow plot mix in a small clearing in the woods about 75 yards back from the thick field line. Once it sprouts up I want to slap up a trail camera and see what comes through. I guess I will get to do that next weekend when I can get up there for Bow season which can't come soon enough.
  21. If your going with an outfitter usually they can help you out with that. If not I think you just need to buy some styrofoam coolers and find a place to buy dry ice and send it by mail. What are you going for if you don't mind me asking?
  22. I originally started muzzleloading as a way to extend my season, but slowly learned to appreciate the level of sport it brings. Granted todays muzzle loaders are a lot more high tech than the old time muskets, but it does in a way bring bring you back in time to the way hunting used to be. With that said I like using iron sights as you either need to practice your longer distance shots until you are sure in your abilities to ethically take the animal or be more up close and personal to ensure a clean kill. Anyway as I like to fully stock my freezer with meat I was toying with the idea of putting on a scope or red dot to increase my range of shot options, but still keep going back to the simplicity of iron sights and the traditional aspect of it. Just wanted to hear your thoughts on it and if people feel the same way.
  23. I made my first batch of sausage last season with a nice doe I took. I used my grinder to stuff the casings which I believe made the process harder than if I had a stuffing press. Hopefully one of these days I will have more space and can buy one. Even with that I can't wait to get back it this season and make some more.
  24. What kind of cameras are you using? Was thinking about picking something up to record my hunts as well. Any recomendations?
  25. Haven't heard to much about them but theres something exciting about pulling the memory card out of my camera after its been sitting a few weeks and seeing what pops up on my screen. I set up my cams last week and don't plan on touching them until I can get up there the first weekend of bow and check them out. Kind of adds to the excitement in my opinion.
