Last night (10/19) Had a nice 3.5 year old 8 point come out of the swamp crossed a swale, grunted and ran off a small buck and proceeded to make a scrape and ripped a tree up. Grunted at him, but no response. He was at about 100 yards. This was just a couple minutes before sunset. Excited to get back in the woods after this rain. First rutting action I have seen this year.

In the Cicero, NY (North of Syracuse) area where I hunt, the decrease in turkeys these past couple of years has been evident. I mean I hardly see any birds at all, let alone gobblers. I have had two cameras out for a couple weeks about 1/2 mile apart and not one gobbler, only a couple hens. In the past (5-7 years ago) if I drove around the local fields and didn't see a fanned bird that was rare this time of year. Has anyone else in this area or any area where you hunt seen a decrease in turkey population?

Hit by a car.
The deer was 50 yards off the road, I know it may seem like it was hit by a car by the way I described the area. But, this deer died in its bed.

There is a nice patch of pine trees that come right up to my road, and when driving you can see deer all the time bedded under the pines and walking around etc. and today I could see from the road a crow on top of a deer chewing away.... second deer I have found dead in my area this year.

That is a great buck, and good for you for passing him. I wish I could do that on the land I hunt, but like many of us we are very lucky to see a buck of that size. I would have been mounting him in fact if I shot him lol! I hope some day to have land where I can pass a buck like that. congrats and good luck the rest of the year!

Thanks for the insight I appreciate it! I do believe it is a persimmon tree, because the size of the fruit. I researched this and the size of a persimmons fruit is appx the size of a quarter... Which is the size of the fruit I obtained.

Looked like an apple tree to me, just when I looked at the size of the "apples" I was confused is all. Thanks!

Maybe not, wiseguy! (me)
The second group of pics look NOT like apples?????
Haha yes that's what fooled me too

I'd say apples. (and I'm right)
Lots of apple trees still hanging onto their fruit this year and the critters are enjoying it.
Thanks, I thought so. But was just surprised it still had fruit. Was just curious thanks.

I came across an area killed with deer sign and especially under this tree which still had fruit in it. I don't believe it is an apple tree (if it is I sure will look dumb lol). Anyways the fruit is about 3/4 inch in diameter. And an almost tomato like color. I am not to educated on identifying trees. I know this won't be hard for many of you to identify, thanks.

I was snowmobiling today and went onto Frenchman's Island and around it and whatnot, and it made me curious as if there were any deer on the Island. I doubt there would be deer on it during the winter with all the sleds going on the Island, but maybe they get pushed over to Dutchman's Island. Have you ever heard of deer on the Island or maybe seen deer? Made me wonder is all

Thanks for the advice, I believe the jon boat with the roap will be what we try. makes sense all around

I built an 11' canoe to get into nasty, inaccessible spots for hunting and fishing. Weighs 23#.
Ah, to be young again! Had a lot of fun with that!
I still have the canoe if anyone's interested?
That is probably what I will be needing to use, just makes the most sense!

The OP said the water is 4 feet deep . He would need chest waders .....
4 feet deep and 60 feet wide ... what about a John-Boat .
This was another option, but the only thing we did not like about this is that deer walk very close to the creek edges and the boat would be varying on location when we cross the creek and I fear the deer will notice it and get spooked? But this is our final option I believe.

I would be worried about a bridge washing out. Can you cut tree's down and lay them acrossed it?
Our creek is way to wide to do that unfortunately.
we thought of that also, and it just would not work. too wide
-
Also not fun when you get a bunch of rain and its to fast and deep to cross.
Deer float though, thats the easiest part of the equation.
Yes thats the other thing, the creek changes height and width very quickly. It could go up to 6 ft deep if heavy rain.

Hip waiters. Ditch them on the other side and put them back on when you leave. I use to do that at a spot I hunted years ago.. Not too much fun in real cold weather but it works.
Problem is that the hip waiters are to small unfortunately, good idea otherwise.

Waders
Thought of that but i would prefer not to hunt in waders. Also if it starts to freeze late season it would be very noisy.

I have a property that I can hunt and to get to the back of the property you have to cross a big creek. I believe it is about 20 yards wide. and i would say it is about 4 feet deep. We were thinking about building a bridge. In the middle put two posts in and they would kind of be like posts on a dock. Any other suggestions? thanks

Personally i buy the cheapest stands they sell at Dick's ($35), They are plenty comfortable for me and yes they are small but easier to move if you need to relocate and if they do get stolen I am not in the hole $100+

Good job!
You seem to have a pretty elaborate setup. Tell me about it, please.
I have a tree-arm camera support. I have a Panasonic HD camcorder(Nothing really over the top). And I have a Go Pro that I mount to my bow with the Bowfinger 2.0 bow camera mount. I love videoing my hunts, it makes it more difficult, but it is worth it in my opinion.

Last night (10/19) just a couple minutes before sundown, I saw a nice 3.5 yr old 8 point come out of a thick swamp, grunted and chased off a small buck. Then made a scrape and tore the branches above it up. First rutting action I have seen. They're starting to get the itch. This was in CNY.
