  1. + 1 Culvercreek hunt club what did the kid end up with ? Or are you still making a decision? How did he like the guns he shot ? I need to live vicariously as I am stuck in the office
  2. When Im not using my 30-30 I use a Swedish Mauser , one of the more accurate rifles I own & a sweetheart to shoot, If he's not into the mil surplus you can get a Tika in 6.5 x 55 also Kimber Of America Swede 96 are just sportorized swedish mausers. Hell of a round.
  3. How is it that I have not seen a post about the all time classic 30-30 ? If you are not sure the kid would like it buy used, You can get a good deal on a used Marlin with a scope for way less than you would be able to buy a new rifle. Plus is he doesn't end up liking it BAM new rifle for you ! Oh by the way if you do go 30-30 make sure you use LeverEvolution rounds and it will be a tack driver out to 200 yards
  4. Thats why I only use 50mm bells now .... I got spoiled by the eye relief.
  5. I don't know if this is the right place for this post, but I will take a shot in the dark. My club has a 150 yard range , and is about the longest I know in the area. I would like to get out to six hundred or a thousand yards. Anybody know of a place somewhere around orange county , or milford PA area ? I heard of one out past Milford PA but can not find the location on the net. I would prefer if its public as I dont know how often I can make the hike if it is far away. Any words from the wise ?
  6. I belong to the Walden Sportsmen. What makes it, is the great bunch of guys who are in it. I started out shooting trap there on Sundays, and a lot of times when you are a beginner in those situations people will turn their nose up at you. At this club everyone was really cool and willing to give advise, and encouragement.
  7. I don't know if this thread is still kicking or not , but I have a Swiss K11 for sale listed in the classifieds that is an unbelievably accurate deer / varmint gun http://huntingny.com/forums/index.php/topic,1644.0.html
  8. http://errorlevelanalysis.com/permalink/d0afd97/ I think its real. http://errorlevelanalysis.com/ check the homepage for what a photoshop image looks like
  9. Numbers Matching, Walnut Stock, accurate out to 1000 Yards, comes with 60 rounds of match grade GP11 ammo. Amazingly smooth action, immaculate bore. I already have 2 of these and a K31 ... have to make room for my increasing Mauser collection. Asking $325 , willing to consider trades. I have a crappy camera, if you want better pics I can email them to you. I am in 3M ... Orange County NY Barrel Length - 25.65 inches: 4-groove, RH, concentric rifling, 1 in 10.63 Overall Length - 43.6 inches Weight - 8.85lbs empty Action - Straight Pull Bolt Action Caliber - 7.5x55 Swiss (GP11) Capacity - 6 round detachable box magazine Sights - Tangent-leaf sight graduated to 1500m Total Production - 528,230
  10. I have no clue if it is real or not , although it certainly looks that way... a buddy of mine sent it to me. Unfortunatley I have no other information, I was actually hoping someone else could shed some light on it.
  11. BTW here is a great article on the Lee Turret press I recomended http://www.realguns.com/archives/122.htm
  12. I would agree with almost all of that , most notably having a dedicated log book. There are so many variables that you can easily loose track even working on one caliber at a time. I also tape targets in the book after shooting so I have a reference point while developing optimal powder / COL
  13. I would disagree with the single stage only because I have had so much good luck with the Lee Turret press. 110 buys you almost everything you need to stat of minus the dies cases powder bullets primers and tumbler. http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=622290 If you decide to make it single stage you take out the indexer and its single. You decide to load 200 rounds and you have the progressive feature. I have recommended this kit to 5 other people and the only one who was not thrilled bought something else. You would be hard pressed to find a better performer or value. BTW I am also in 3M if you need a word from the wise I would be happy to give it to you. as far as the 30/30 reloading I have to say that I got some of the LeverEvolution bullets and have a better grouping than any 30/30 I have ever seen out to 200 yards. Because the are pointed and still manage not to blow off the other rounds in the tube they are sooo much more accurate than the standard rounds. 160 Grain FXP bullet (LeverEvolution) 29.5 Grain Varget Laupa brass CCI benchrest primers
  14. Has anyone shot one of these ? My understanding is that you can get them in either smooth bore or rifled. can a rifled barrel shoot shot ? Will a smooth bore be accurate with the .45 ? seems like the old saying that when you design something to do two things it doesn't do either of them well. That being said the thing is awesome and I want one. Thoughts ?
  15. As long as my girls don't see me butchering it they will eat it, god forbid I have a bunny on chopping block when the wife gets home !
  16. You guys are probably right about respecting the law, regardless of whether I agree with it or not. I digress.
  17. I wasn't advocating anything.
  18. I would just bring one gun in the woods and take him with you. Did you shoot the deer ? Did he shoot the dear ? I dunno , all I can say is ... Its your god given right to hunt, and your kids to, as long as he is responsible.
  19. I use the old military " Micky Mouse" boots I got them unissued for 25 bucks at a local military surplus store and they are AWESOME .... you can still get them online for around 40-50 bucks if you search around http://www.mickeymouseboots.com/pages/faq
  20. It probably will be slightly less accurate due to the less strenuous guidelines in manufacturing, certainly good enough for government work , I have a ton of the 8mm and it shoots great. Chucks and coyotes would meet their demise with extreme prejudice, however as previously stated it will go straight though, and go until something stops it, so be careful whats behind where you shoot.
  21. My wife likes crappy reality TV , This is the only one I will watch with her despite it sucking at least there is something somewhat related to what i am interested in.
  22. next time you see that guy you might want to recommend a bullet hammer , does a real clean neat job of getting the powder & bullet out http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=215517
  23. http://scienceblogs.com/dispatches/2010/07/officers_make_up_lie.php This is truly despicable.
  24. Bill- Look at this as an opportunity. It sounds like you now have something to do this winter. Get a game caller and see how many of them critters you can get. You can pick up a little spending money that way too. Doc Doc, How can you get spending money for yotes ? can you sell the fur or something ? If so where ? I always just shot them because they were a nuisance and had a lot of fun getting together with the boys. If I can make some loot off it I would be thrilled
