they are a very reliable rifle.
-
they are good guns. Sometimes it requires a few tweaks to help them become better. You can get an oring and put it on the stud where the forend screws down. This will in essence float the barrel. The other thing to do is make sure the forend does not touch the barrel. Sometimes a trigger job helps, but I do not recommend this. Search H&R tweaks you will get all the little things that help.

Good info. I think if I wear orange at least when I am mor elikely to fall out of my stand, I can be found easier
-
yup it is always the poachers and tresspassers whio choose not to wear bo Like it is the archers who wound all the deer.
-
k I tried, but I cant do it. Do I think it is smart not to wear orange? NO. Do I think it should be a law? NO. Do I think it is my responsibility to make you safer? NO I just have a hard time with some of the rationalization of it. First of all not everyone in the woods during deer season is hunting deer. If I am hunting coyotes, orange is the last thing I want on. I have that right to do so during open season. IN fact some times I will sit over a gut pile to pop a couple The thought that anyone who is wearing camo is planning to break the law is preposterous at best. I guess I am fortunate enough to hunt in an area where orange is not common, and here we have manyl ess incidents than other parts of the state. As I see it you guys have already been conditioned to look for orange and if a person is not wearing it, they are in the wrong, and are stupid for wearing camo. It only validates my beginning statement that if you do not see orange no one is there. This causes you to look much less diligently for other persons. If I am in my camo in my woods or my green wool, and you walk up on me, believe me you are going to know I am there. If I am in camo or my greenwool on public land and you walk up on me again, you are going to know I am there. I am going to speak to you, I am going to apologize to you and move on. When I hunted state land, more than once I have walked on to people in complete camo at the base of a tree. I do not care what camo they are wearing, they still stand out if you are truly looking. I am conditioned to look for camo and orange is a bonus. I am willing to bet anyone here if they are in camo in the woods, I will see you, because I look for you. Again if you think everyone should wear orange, you will only be looking for orange. I have argued this point for years also. If NY state thinks orange is such a great thing and they all claim deer do not see it, why do they only want to mandate it for gun season. If it is to be mandatory make it for all big game seasons. If deer do not see it, it should not matter to archery or muzzleloading either. I can certainly shoot you just as far away with my ml as I can with a shotgun. If I had to hunt in an area where I basically feared for my life every time I went out, I would stop hunting. Realistically you are much more likely to get killed on your way to or home from hunting than you are actually hunting. You can only live in a bubble so long. But iof wearing orange gives you that false sense of security, go for it. To me it is like locking your guns in a glass front cabinet and thinking they are secure. THat remins me I need ot go get my nephews new safe. Please read the disclaimer below and act accordingly. Do I think paulie loked fo rpeople yes I do. Do I think paulie is a ssafe as he canbe, yes I do. Do I think paulie is conditioned to only look for orange yes I do as he stated in the original post I looked for orange or flash lights, and did not see any. If it were dark enough to need a light BO was not gonna stick out either. Before I climbed the tree I looked around for flash lights or any orange I could see. Once up in my tree I did the same and then once again when it was nice and light. a direct quote

backing out of this thread before it turns into a my dad can beat up your dad thread. I will be sure to keep my opinions politically correct from now on so I do not offend anyone as I am an instructor. Merry Christmas to all.
-
Please re read my response. I did not ask if you had ever attended a hunter safety course. I asked if you had ever attended an instructor course or seen the curriculum. My post stands if you haven't you have no clue about the program and how it is run. If you feel you have the ability to rescue the program and make it better, I will gladly send you the contact information to be come an instructor. Otherwise I see you as an armchair quarterback. My point was and is because I am an instructor I can still have an opinion without every response having to be arent you an instructor? I teach by the curriculum and to be honest most guys in my area that become instructors do so with my mentoring and either approval or my denial recommendations get them in or out. I never said wearing BOP is a bad thing. My point is and always will be it isnt the only thing. And if it becomes mandatory, it will be the only standard to identify a target. No orange must be an animal. or as some said someoine wearing DUMB clothes. Disclaimer. All words in this post are my opinion and have no bearing on my abilities to be a safety instructor.
-
Hey Burt if you have one do not give up your regular job for a career in comedy. You will starve to death.
-
I agree that would be cool, but highly unlikely. Way too much liability. That would eb like asking a cop to let you sit in the car in a hostage situation.
-
I agree with Ed. Also just as an fyi, last weekend I found sheds at camp near one food plot. I cant see how a hind quarter shot would instantly kill a deer. I would more likely assume it died there by coincidence. Again I must put the disclaimer this is just my opinion and being a safety instructor in no way influenced this opinion.

please read what I said. I never said you were unsafe. I said it is not my job to make you safer. I also said and talk to states where bo is mandatory that hunters become condidioned just to look for orange when trying to find other hunters. My simple point was you said you looked for orange assuming that all hunters wear it. And when I said my opinion, which is based on studies done,I was attacked. I never in my posts said I do not wear orange, I said it is my right not to. So I guess a lot of assuming took place here. Seems to me I am not the one with the thin skin. I love being attacked when I have an opinion that goes against the grain and it always gets thrown uo that because I am an instructor, I should not have a personal opinion and obviously I must teach students to be unsafe. It simply shows me how narrow minded some are. It has to be there way or it is wrong. That being said Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and yours. I am glad it all turned out well, but next time look real close, because honestly, I have not seen any camo pattern that can not be detected by the naked eye of a human. Also I must add if you felt so strongly about this subject all the things the guy was doing wrong, why didn't you approach him to discuss it with him and make your points instead fo doing it at home safely behind a screen. I would have went over and pointed it out and used it as a time to show the child how a hunter should dress to FEEL safe. I guess that is just me. I use every opportunity to preach what I practice.

please do not flatter yourself to you offended me. I was responding to the post about people wearing carharts and dumb clothing. And I am also wanting to inform you no on eon this site knows me, like you they assume they do.
-
what am I doing wrong by stating I am against mandatory BO? Because I differ from you? That just shows you lack of mentality
-
well let me see where to start. First I must ask because I am an instructor, I am not entitled to an opinion? Second Have you ever attended an instructor class or seen the curriculum? If not you have no basis for your opinion. If so, next time you should read it as it is very outlined and detialed. Thord because I have a different opinion, you assume I teach that way? Again you are way off base and your attack on me is based entirely in your uninformed opinion, which is what you are accusing me of. Seems like the kettle pot thing. If yo uwere to get the information on hunting incidents I get as an INSTRUCTOR or worked as closely with DEC personnel I do as an INSTRUCTOR, you would know the inside story of incidents in this state and the bottom line is everyone of then involves hunting laws being broken at the time. Things like shooting after hours, poaching and the like. I would suggest you get your facts straight before attacking. Oh and by thw way the official DEC stance is they are against mandatory orange. If they were for it, it would have happpened long ago. Now that being said, I can say with 100 percent certainty, for the over 25 years I have been an instructor, not one of my students have ever been involved is shooting someone else. So I guess my teachinbg methods must be soemwhat effective.

it is my right until NY state says different.

camo nothing about 8-10yrs ago Im up in my stand and see movement along with something dark moving through the golden rod field next to me (about 300-350yrds away) . I cant make it out soget out the binos its 3 guys 2 in brown carharts and 1 in blue or black carharts . oh and they were hunting (poaching) all had guns . it takes all kinds , seen many people in the woods during gun season with dumb clothes on not just hunters either . On what basis can you say they were poaching? Because they wore DUMB clothes. To me that makes you the dumb one unless you actually saw them poaching. And if you did, you should have turned them in. If you didnt then you are making a stereotypical assumption.
-
It is not my job to make you safer. If I choose to wear camo, which by the way I hunt private proprery and I know who is there that is my choice. To make them out ot be the bad guys because they do not adhere to your standards si simply wrong. This is just another post for trying to make orange mandatory. Good luck with that one. I truly find it hard to believe you could pick out a brown back tag but could not pick out th person. You truly make my point why blaze is a bad thing mandated. You only looked for a oatch of orange. Had you paid closer attention to detail, I bet you could have seen them rather than just looking for orange. Se seriously dont blame them for your lack of detail. If BO becomes mandatory, everyone will do like you and just look for ornage. Anything else will be ok.

Thank you. Yes I can spend as much time as I see fit. Unfortunatley the guys and I who teach together have never used a cross bow. So my teaching how to use one would be like a nun teaching a birthing class. No offense. I already have moved a 10 hour class into 12 or more hours to cover all I see fit.
-
next year it will be implemented in the hunter safety classes. It is alloted 15 minutes out of the class. So, as stated you will get more on here. We have been given a video to show in class. Until then, you have to take the self study and fill out the certificate, which I might add is more than was ever utilized for muzzleloaders which everyone bought and had no clue about them and headed out.

consider the cva also. The optima is a sweet shooter also.
-
I hate to say it lol but I told ya so. I have en ecnore not pro hunter, and it has a 45 caliber bergara barrel that shoots very sweet. I would recommend the encore to anyone.

in the north where I live we get two weeks for the ml. One before regular season, one after. And archery starts 9/28, so plenty of time here to hunt. Ml ended here on 12/11. I had an opportunity to head south for the weekend, but I passed and stayed home. So my vote would be another late week here and end the same day as sz ml.
-
I always look forward to getting the sidelock and flintlock out and shooting some round balls. Nothing like it. It is also very effective.
-
if you use pellets it really is no more expensive. You pay as much fo ra box of pellets and get less shots out of it. I am gettign bh209 for 27 dollars shipped to my door. Last I saw it was 28 to thirty for pellets.
-
bh 209 is nitro cellusose base ( the same base as smokeless) It shoots very consistently and cleans like a centerfire. It requires a decent 209 primer to ignite it and sometimes a modification to the breech plug. The best place for all the info is www.blackhorn209.com
