  1. To answer your queston, there is no answer. There are too many variables such as bullet weight, what the gun shoots well etc open sights vs scope. How good the scope is. If I could not shoot the gun at paper at 150, I dont think I would shoot at game that far if I didnt know where it hits. As far as the 770, the first time you shoot at somethng and have to fuss with the action to get it to open and then close again, you will wish you had put a little more into a gun. I realize it is the first rifle, but make it a decent one. Look at the savage bolts. A smooth action and as good if not better accuracy than the 770 or a 700. We have a dummy 770 for hunter ed clalsses. You can barely get the action to open, and it is worse to close. I have tore it apart cleaned lubed and everything else with no improvement. It does get opened and closed alot during a class as all students use it to load and unload a bolt action. But it is rendered not able to shoot, but if I had to mess with an action that much, I would buy a single shot H&R and have an action that works smoothly and dependably and money still in my pocket, especially if you plan to upgrade in the future. In my opinion you are wasting youe money, but it is your money to waste.
  2. go tot he dec website and go to hunter educationa and click on the become an instructor link. fill out the app get thereferences and mailit in
  3. My opinion is deer can only eat apples while apples are available. If I had bordering land, I would be planting something that brought the deer to my house. Or I would quit griping about the guy who had all the deer, and get on his good side and hunt there. Sounds like sour apples to me.(pun intended) I was able to hunt on a large farm this fall. My nephew works there. They have well over 15 thousand acres scattered around. They had 800 acres of corn and 300 acres of alfalfa destroyed by deer. They got 10 nuisance permits for all the property. They opened up some of the areas to people that work for them. Basically each amployee got a piece to themselves to hunt. My nephew had about 150 acres and 1 permit. The evening I went there with my dmp, I saw in one sitting 37 deer in the alfalfa. I chose a nice doe and took her. My nephew filled a ml tag his buck tag and one nuisance permit plus the one I got. That was all that was taken off that 150 acres. That did not even make a dent. I am guessing in my opinion the nieghbors have no clue how to hunt or they are mad they were not invited. If I own a piece of property such as I do, (400 plus acres) I should be allowed to have anyone in I choose and if I choose to wipe out a bunch of deer legally, that is my choice. No one elses business as long as the deer are on my property, and can freely choose to leave. Simple as that.
  4. As a 25 plus year instructor, I used to hold a class every two months. The only time the classes fill up are just before seasons such as spring turkey and fall deer. I have had classes in june and july with three or four signing up. then from augist to to december I get constant calls to have a class. When I do have one in september, it sills quickly, then I get the calls of peole bitching me out because the class is full and they cant find one Umm from September to December, I am hunting. I would suggest you sign up to be an instrctor to help assist with filling the void. No bitterness there, but if you were certified, you could give all those looking for a class, a class. Instructors are mandated to have a class once a year to stay certified. some only do that.
  5. Just because he wasnt carrying a gun does not mean he was not hunting. Open the reg guide and read the definition of hunting. I quote from page 18 of the guide To Hunt: means to persue, shoot, kill, or capture (other than trap) wild life and includes all lesser acts that disturb or worry wildlife whether or not they result in taking. Hunting also includes all acts that assist another person in taking wildlife.
  6. what no one told us upstate hicks you cant shoot no deers at night. They stand real still at night. My fish and game club bought them a fake robot deer to use. And believe me the guys who are out at night are not the ones who you want in the woods during the day. To call them hunters is improper english. Plus those are the ones who got caught legally. You should see how we handle the ones we catch.
  7. so people who want to target shoot should not be allowed to during deer season? I would be much more concerned about the fools in the woods than at a target.
  8. so is drinking and driving but that doesnt seem to stop anyone... or a little nip to stay warm when hunting. I wonder if the guy who did the shooting was trying to stay warm.

there is a one inch piece you can remove from the stock to make it shorter. It comes with metal solid built fiber optic sites
  10. the new method of the true deer hunter. They are firing warning shots to let the deer know they are there. It is very sportsman like.
  11. I dont understand why it is so generally thought that you need such power to kill a whitetail. Bigger better. If you want an all around coyote and deer rifle, get a 25-06. You can get 80 grain bullets for coyotes and ranging up to 120 for deer. I love the comment that a 30-30 is a shade on the light side for deer. I bet more deer are taken with that caliber every year than any other. I use a 25-06 and this fall I took a 190 pound 8 point one shot through the vitals with a 115 grain nosler partition. He ran 40 yards and piled up dead. He may not be as dead as is I had used a 30-06, but none the less he was dead. I am now using 100 grain bullets to start hunting coyotes. Unless you live near a nuclear power plant and have some mutant deer, yu ownt go wrong for all you mentioned you want to do. Stop watching the pretend deer hunts on tv and actually read some ballistics and see what a caliber will do.
  12. looks like everyone has a favorite, but no one has one to trade. I am much older than 15, and I use a 25-06 with 115 grain bullets. No need for anything else. Now, if you want my opinion, scope the black diamond, and shoot a hornady xtp bullet in a decent sabot, and hunt anything you want to. Lots of knock down power

    last chance

I passed on a big rack saturday afternoon. It was 4:20 or so. he walked out into the food plot filled with turnips. He was under a tall box stand, which I chos enot to get in as I wanted to see both food plots. Anyway he was about 240 yards away. I attempted to put on a stalk, but the warm snow was very crunchy. I got to 200 yards and watched. I watched until dark. That is firther than I would want to try a good shot with a muzzleloader. It was awesome to see. A nice 10 point. But hae hs 6 on one side, 4 the other. I moved out to go back today. Well in the night the freezing rain/sleet started and there was a good coat of ice on everything. So, I decided to pack up and come home as it was changing to snow, and I wanted to get out of camp. I will do soem shd scouting after season to see where he hangs. I feel good about turning down an iffy shot. Oh well, it has been a great season. I was invited to go south next weekend, but I am going to get the house ready for the holidays. 2 deer on the ground and one I passed. Makes for good times. There was all kinds of activity all around the food plots. We had fresh snow wednesday and it looked like it had been there for months with all the activity. Ht the food sources now if you want o see deer.
  16. for 70 bucks a year, I believe you are getting simple liability. You better check your policies
  17. It is about the be next generation. Watching the two young guys at my camp get a deer was so great. It is all about getting them steered in the right direction and keeping them in the sport.
  18. as quoted by Dr. Johnny Fever "In the spirit of Christmas. we murdered a tree for you." I love a real tree.
  19. you were the one telling me what I was saying. I just want to see whee I did. As i see it you have no clue what you are talking about
  20. and my bowling comment was a response to this and as i said after it was a joke response. Is that the best you got? This comment was the one who said to do somethng oither than hunting? Jump on this one
  21. so you can't find any place where I told someone theyneeded more time? I didn't think so. My responses have been generic, but you jumped on it like I was talking to you directly, or you were standng up for the down trodden? which is it? 3 deer in an area loaded with deer? Is that an accomplishment? just curious
  22. please show me where I said anything directly to anyone about the time they spend? Please quote them and show me. I guess you took it personally since you dont feel you put in enough time.
  23. geesh I never said others do not put in their time. Again I said what works for me. Get over it.
  24. I never said practice makes perfect. I simply stated what works for me to as you say close the deal. I guess that it upsets some people that I put in time and do a good job. Oh well
