I am so far north I see canada out my back door literally. 120 miles northeast of syracuse. I live in 6a but hunt in 6c

thanks. 400 acres. The wood cookstove works and we cook on it, as well as the gas stove. Nothing like venison off a wood fire. It also heats well. I like the gas lights and prefer not to use the generator much. A gas frefrigerator that wil also run electric. It is a great place to hide.

umm carthage is a lot more that 2 hours from binghamton. It is almost 2 hours from binghamton to syracuse. Check your local gun shops right after season. A lot of guys sell guns to buy christmas gifts.

ok since we are sharing here is the camp. The kitchen was added this summer. It has both propane and a generator.

guys who empty the gun at a a deer rather than make a good shot. I jokingly say they are firing a couple warning shots to let the deer know they are after them. On guy I hunted with for a brief time did that and that was why I hunted with him for a brief time. The other thing we told him was he practiced shoot and release. Shoot 4 or 5 times never hot anything.

yes we do teach it, but we also teach it is not very productive. I am glad for this guy it did work. But it is taught as three shots then the response is two shots. Unfortunately in most cases it is ignored as most think it is a hunter practicing shoot and release, or firing a couple warning shots to alert the aninal they are after them. We teach to tell people where you are going to go and stay there, or if you move let someone know, and also let them know when you plan to return. If every time i heard threeshots in the woods, I responded, I would spend a lot of time looking for distressed hunters. Just my opinion, but I have taught the course for 25 years. OH BTW, this method does not work well with archers either.

I know my opinion is null because I live north but I see few deer every season. I have seen probably 30 deer since mid october when ml season started. I am sure some of them are for the second or maybe third time. I would also compare the weather patterns to previous years and also the unusual rut. Has anyone seen what they would call a hard rut? In other words can you really say you saw sign to definitively say yes the rut is on? Lots of windy days when deer do not move. Lots of bad weather in the way of rain. At least here, the swamps are flooded, and that changes deer patterns. The moon phase is a big factor also. Chalk it up to a bad season and move on. It is not a personal reflection on you as a hunter for not seeing as many deer as usual. The deer have not vanished, it is other factors. Today is the last day for rifle season in the north, then another week of Ml in my area. This week, when I have been able to get out, there seems to be more activity. There is about 3 inches of snow here now and it shows that the deer are there, they just change patterns. When it gets later in the season, after the rut, mid day hunts seem to be more productive. That is why I am sitting here right now, as I am off in an hour or so to take my place in my stand. Good luck to all. If what you are doing isnt working, change it up a bit.

and there is no punishment when they are caught.

Macinaw was the word for clothes not real tree. How did we ever fill a deer tag?

I use blackhorn 209 now, but have used pyrodex select. I am hooked on blackhorn 209. It is all they say it is. I can shoot 15 times and never swab. One patch with hoppes#9 a dry patch and a patch with rem oil, I am done. Then some hoppes or windex on the breech plug. It cleans as a centerfire does. 90 grains in my encore with a 250 grain bullet in a harvester crush rib sabot chronoed at 1742 average. I pay 40 bucks a container, but compared to the 120 I was shooting of pyrodex, I get as many shots out of a container. The last pyro I bought was 24. I will pay the difference. I also use goex in my hawken and new englander shotgun.

man you read this then go back to the previous page, it looks so tiny. lol

That deer is questionable to be legal with antler restrictions

somehow I can picture that.

What page in the Regs Booklet is that on ? : ... ;D ... ;D ... ;D Lol it isnt in the book that I know of. I was just quoting what a dec officer told me when I asked about my bow and ml together during the week both seasons are open here in the north. He said absolutely not. But he was the same one who said you can carry field tips and broadheads. I guess he doenst like me as well as I thought. I would ask before I did is all. I guess you make up your mind which you want to use and use it. If it doesn't work out oh well it is hunting. Could you really imagine lugging all needed for both and getting it all set up? You may as well stay home. I choose my ml for most of regular season. If a deer is out of range of it, but the 25-06 would have done it, I made a bad choice. Next time I bring the 25.

Rgeardless of what combo works in yor gun, anyone who is trying to sight in a gun for accuracy, should swab the barrel after every shot. This is how you get the best accuracy. Consistency is the key. Do it the same way every shot. When you have the gun sighted in shoot three without swabbig to see what happens to the accuracy,in case you need a second shot. I shoot blackhorn 209 and swab bwetween shots at the range.

there is no best answer. It will all depend on what the gun shoots well. My t/c rifles (encore and impact) seem to do best in the 240 to 250 range. I shoot a 250 grain round nose lead bullet I mold myself in a harvestr crush rib sabot. I get 5 touching out of either gun at 100 yards, but the powder charges are different. One shoots pyrodex select the othe rblackhorn 209. You do not need to hurl a conical the size of a football to harvest deer.

You guys forget there is a new york north of the thruway lol

I call it hunter insanity. They have to kill all that moves.

is that a chevy vega? I have been in this sport about 40 years or so. My memories of the good old days were hanging out at camp with my family. There was no generator or satellite tv. we entertained ourselves by talking playing cards and telling deer stories. My dad, uncles, aunts and cousins would get up and make deer drives. Most of the camp ran on propane ie cooking stove lights fridge. When we needed tank, my dad would put a 100 pounder in the trunk of the car and drive it 40 miles to camp. Camp was a 14x28 single room that was capable of sleeing 10 with bunk beds and a fold out couch. there was no room for modesty. Ther were no magnums just 30-30's and my dad had a model 99 300 savage. No scopes open sites. This was smack in the middle of the dacks, so we hunted hard, saw few deer. I remember the first party permits as they were called. It took 4 guys on a form to get one permit. We ate well hunted hard told big stories and laughed a lot. Man I miss those days. Yeah, I do get more deer now, but I dont think it is any better. We go to camp now and there are the young guys texting listenng to mp3 players, checking their face book accounts and watching 100 channels of tv. I think no one ever just talks any more. If I had one wish before I died, it would be to spend one more weekend at that old camp with those who have passed. I would just sit there and listen to the stories, most of which were a stretch to say the least, but I would listen attentively like I did when I was a kid. I would love to take the younger generation so they could see how much fun we could have technology free. Here is apic of the old place. It has since fallen in and we lost it due to a lot of legal mumbo jumbo. I also remember gettng toi campo friday evening after dark. You could see your breath in the camp. You would get the fire started and shiver all night. We were about 1/2 mile off the highway, so when you heard a vehicle, you went to the window to see who else was coming to camp. I posted thos before reading the thread, so I apologize if I repeated a lot of memories, but I had to share mine. I read as far as ed's pics and had to respond. This thread made my night.

I fI wanted real legal advice, I would consult a lawyer or leo. I guess it was wanted to be done for him. Maybe he hit hios flask too many times and could not drive to the police station to ask. A few on here did the leg work for him, and he argued with them. It is easy to see the real post here. My buddies got after me for drinking while I wa shunting, and do not want to hunt with me anymore. I need proof they are wrong. Every aspect of what wa sasked is in a word moronic. I have worked with substance abusers for a long time and they all attack and blame everyone but them selves for the problem. Anyonr with a half a brain would not hunt with someone who is drinking regardless of the law.

the same as taking a swig to warm up can spiral out of control. I emaile dmy friend who is a dec eco supervisor in my area. The response I got was that there is no law against carrying a flask with alcohol in it while hnting. However there is a laws against being under the inflience while hunting. In his words, "If I find a can of beer while doing s check, be prepared for a lot more scrutiny and closer checking." He is a long term employee and a leiutenant in my area. So carry away, but you are breking the law by consuming alcohol while hunting.

I plan to sk my dec buddy who answers questiond for me all the time. Legal or not it is still stupid

bubba replied to TChunter's topic in Deer Hunting
it depends on where you travel from. For me, it is a 45 minute drive, so I travel it alot. Lots of great territory and the sereniy is awesome. Bit you will not drive up park and see a lot for a long time. IMHO very much worth it every mile you drive and walk.
