If you climb trees, wear a safety harness...

Saw a couple deer in 4J on opening day. Saw two black bears in 4C yesterday 10/13...first time for both me and dad to see black bear in the woods...we've been hunting in that spot for deer for a couple years now and never saw any indication that there was any bears there.
Also know that a deer was killed in 4C this morning 10/14, saw the gut pile as we were walking in this afternoon. Saw nothing all day then kicked up two right at the car, after sunset.

I bought a .270 Ruger American this summer.
Here's my grouping at 100 yards (third time shooting the gun):
Hit the paper all 4 times at 250 yards:

I don't think they reduced any numbers, same as last year. I think you just had bad timing, they had the youth hunt and then opening day all on one stock. I bet it gets restocked for this three day weekend coming up. I found a few out of the way spots at both spots last year and sure enough that's where I found birds yesterday. Personally I will be at preserves during gun season as it is the best way to get my dogs on birds and I don't gun hunt a whole lot.
That makes sense, I didn't realize the youth weekend was this past weekend (29-30), I thought it was the weekend before.

Where did you go? I hit up Daketown and Elderidge lane yesterday with my dog and we found a few but that was after the woods calmed down from the onslaught of early morning. Lots of guys were at Daketown and it stunk there but we did find two there and a couple dead ones that fell victims to owls. Only saw a few guys at elderidge lane and they were done by 1230 when I left. I think they only put a 150-200 per stock and in theory they will restock mid to late week but we don't get as many as other parts of the state that have better grounds.
We were at Daketown and didn't see a damn thing. Usually we are tripping over birds at that place, we have hunted there opening weekend and later into the season and always find birds. Do you know if they reduced the number of birds they stock?
We were working with a dog today and still were not able to kick anything up.

Went to a spot today that was supposed to be a pheasant release site. Second day of the season, didn't kick up a single bird and no sign that much of anything had been shot there yesterday.
Anybody know if the DEC released the birds for the opener or are they waiting until this weekend?

Afternoon sit in 4j...nothing yet.

Heading to 5J for the NZ opener after class on Thursday, then hunting either 4J or 4C for SZ opener Monday!
-
Gonna bump this as we come up on another season so others can see it and contribute...
-
Aw hell yes. Going out the afternoon of the 1st after my class...might even sneak up to the NZ weekend of 29-30 to try and fill last year tags...
I shoot year round so my bow is always ready to go.
-
I would have liked to see the two weeks added on to the END of bow season rather than the beginning....hunting deer when it is still 70+ degrees out is not fun!

Dad and I went to that too. We were pretty disappointed.

25 minutes for police to arrive after hanging up 5 times on the boy?
Wow.

In 2012, in a historic movement, Killer Whales wins the right to vote. Shamu becomes the largest president in the history of the United States and declares war on Elephant Seals. Elephant Seals march up and down San Francisco in protest. Riots break out throughout the Pacific Coast.
This was the very first thought that came to my mind. If killer whales are protected by the Constitution, then they have the right to vote...

'Liberal media slant'??? Did you read the article? There's no slant whatsoever. The article simply reports what happened. Why does that seem to offend you guys?
Read between the lines. It's a self injury story. Do you honestly think that this story would have made national headlines had the injury occurred with any instrument other than firearm?

Life in prison is better than she deserves.
I'm going to take a lot of shit for this, but she should get the chair.
-
Why is this news? Just goes to show the liberal slant in the media.
If I went to a car show and hit someone with my car in the parking lot, do you think that would make the national news?
We should just ban cars all together, actually. They cause more deaths than guns.

Good to see people are still hitting them. My semester at school started a couple weeks ago so not sure if I will be able to get out again this season...

Walt,
Yes, section 1 is where I see the most greys, but you are right that is bow only. Have you tried the part of section 9 along highway 155 (i.e, just across the road from section 1?)

Went to Parcel 45 today and was completely skunked. Weather looks crappu for the rest of the week so not sure when I'll get out again...

Eh, reading the Pine Bush regulation by the letter implies that air rifle is not permissable, as it specifically states by bow or non-toxic shotgun.
Edit: Actually, the above is not true. Buried in the fine print is that .177 pellet guns are allowed...
I do not remember the trail head numbers, but I always see greys in the area south of the Welcome Center on State Highway 155.

Anyone seen any greys out in the woods in Saratoga County? Im looking at Middle Grove and Daketown as new spots. Albany Pine Bush, Ushers Road and Parcell 45 (next to Wilton Mall) all seem to be Reds at this point. I may try Wilton Wildlife Preserve and Capital District MWA in the next few weeks also.
I was talking to an old timer in the woods the other day and he told me to hang a bird feeder out there if I really wanted to fill my limit. While the idea seemed over the top to me, it appears via the DEC website that offering the weary late season squirrels some black oil sunflower or the like in a handful on log isnt illegal per their exclusion on the list.
I hunt Daketown for pheasant, I have never seen a grey there but a few reds.
I see greys in the Albany Pine Bush all the time, but the non-toxic shot requirement is killer..any suggestions?

Went out today, saw only one squirrel. They're quick...

About to head out with my dad for a little afternoon squirrel/rabbit hunting. Hopefully we can get it done.

Lots of deer in 4J. You have to learn to play both the deer and the other people using the area.
