I just sign it on what it comes on and carry it with my license, don't stick it to anything.

River, What town is that in? How close to Schoharie creek are they? Still don't know how to get to my place
-
"Not for me...I used the buck and 1 DMP in bow.... had second buck and DMPS for gun and a either or for ML..." How do you have an either or left for ML?

Yes the lifetime is still good.

But it is proof of a wild mountain lion which many laugh at the thought. Face it if someone said they saw a mountain lion you didn't believe it. Now you want breeding population. No one ever said there was a breeding population only if they saw or heard about a mountain lion that was sighted.

"We all been hunting a long time. If there were Mountain Lions in New York, we all be finding tracks and scat. And no one has ever found any. And no proof to be found on all those thousands of trail cameras out there either. " So a dead wild mountain lion isn't good enough you want tracks and scat?

Dave I also thought that was a good idea. The problem i see is that they know the # of DMPs they are giving out and start doing so early in the year. They would have to sell archery licenses and then recalculate right before handing out dmps The only way that works is if you have a time limit to get your license, lets say August, then you would have to go back in October or so to apply for DMP. Then will bowhunters have the first chance at DMPs? State isn't going to do that

What is a lifetime license card. Basically a license on credit card type material? Do you get it automatically or have to apply for one? My son has had a lifetime license since he was 5, 18 now doesn't have anything.

I would think that in most areas where DMPs are already given out most people if not all would be issued a dmp. The control would be the fact that it has to be used in that DMP not state wide. What they could do is issue a anterless tag to everyone like they do know when you buy a license but it has to be for a a select dmp

I feel safety is the issue a lot. We have up to 10 people hunting 300 acres at any given time. We are family with a few close friends. We all know where each other will be at the start of the day and if they plan on changing during the day. Having people you might have given permission to hunt during the summer just come on up and get in the woods could be a big problem safety wise. Not to mention the hassle it would be to find someone 50 yards away when the sun comes up. Nothing to do with the deer they roam, at least by me, way off our 300 acres all the time. You have to hope they get by others and make it back to ours without any encounters.

Luckily I can take my son out duck hunting on the island so he gets to hunt and enjoys it. Unfortunately I haven't seen a gray squirrel in 10 years and rabbits even longer on the property we have. Coyotes hawks whatever have taken their toll on them. Tried coyote hunting but that"s a whole new sport that I haven't figured out.

"Lets face it, be it a special season or not, hunting, especially deer hunting from a stand can be quite boring for a youngster. Combine this with hunting in an area where you don't get to see deer every day out, and it makes for a long, dreary day for a kid." Exactly ! and when they spend a weekend upstate away from their friends and girlfriend who are at some party texting what a good time they are having and your son is sitting in a tree watching "nothing" thanks to the DEC wanting to shoot every deer that walks. It gets tough to get them involved! Yeah son do you want to come back next weekend?

Getting rid of antlerless tags and even any sex tags is a good thing that should have happened years ago. The state can't possibly manage the deer herd if you can shoot 3 doe just about anywhere in the state with no restrictions. Hand out antlerless tags according to the need of each DMU. If the state isn't giving out DMP in a unit then their really is a reason not to shoot doe there! The youth weekend will let kids get out there in better weather and in a time when the deer aren't going to go in hiding after the first day(hour). There hopefully be more sightings of deer and this is what keeps them interested and coming back. Its frustrating taking a kid out and trying to keep him interested in hunting when your not seeing any deer.

DEC Formulating Their "5 Year Deer Management Plan"
orion replied to wztirem's topic in General Hunting
that's the problem with deer management, even if the DEC decided to do footwork where do they go ? Your property ? Your neighbors which seem to have considerably less? A few miles from me there are some cornfields, we have food plots, others have nothing. which land you happen to walk on holds huge differences in deer density yet only a few miles if that apart... "I know that we don't seem to make a dent in the population" I also fell the best lands will hold a certain amount of deer if you shoot 20 deer i feel 20 deer from the surrounding areas will fill those spots leaving the less desirable land with fewer deer, not your land. I guess what I am trying to say that the good land will hold x amount of deer and then the excess will start dispersing to surrounding land, no excess the surrounding land feels the loss not the good land. -
woodchucks and most small game diminished greatly when coyotes starting moving in. Never did have a large population of squirrels or rabbits but now its a rare occasion when you see one.

DEC Formulating Their "5 Year Deer Management Plan"

G-man you are harvesting more deer than anyone in my hunting party sees. We have 300 acres and would think the whole area by us doesn't have the deer density that you are harvesting. This is the reason deer management plans are so hard to implement especially statewide. How many deer per square mile do you think you have? -

G-man 15 deer a year, How much land is that? -
"If the average joe, faced with a shorter season or less opportunity...would be more apt to take a young buck" I would agree. Knowing that you have another weekend or two to hunt will make it easier for those to pass up a smaller buck on opening day. If its a week long season everything is getting shot at first site.

Do you wear Orange? If so why? If not Why not? :)
orion replied to TheHunter's topic in General Hunting
What I don't get is why people think it's about being misidentified as a deer is the only concern. A hunter in full camo can walk around and not be seen. This might put him in areas that might be down range from a hunter who thinks whats beyond where deer may be is clear. He has a much better chance at being seen in BO. Why do so many not want to be seen? -
nyantler. Yes we might have different ideas about what a shortage is. I have been hunting this land which has been in my family for 30 years. I don't feel like leaving. I don't measure success by shooting a deer. I have my son hunting now and it would be nice if he thought he had a chance at shooting a deer, but when your out there for days on end and the only thing you see is a doe and a fawn at the end of a day it gets hard to persuade a kid there's a buck coming soon. The tactics are irrelevant when you can walk 300+ acres and not see any fresh tracks in a day.
