  1. Welcome to turkey hunting! Can be frustrating and wonderful all in the same morning. Had a guy tell me the other day that turkeys are dumb and doesnt understand why its so hard for hunters to shoot one....i told him the only people that say that have never hunted a turkey!
  2. Awesome bird! Congrats!
  3. Hunted hard today, but no bird on the ground. Heard one at first light an kicking myself for not trying to move in on him. Oh well its only the first day!
  4. Turned out to be a nice morning here in 8f.
  5. Heard one gobble just before first light in 8f. Kicking myself because i think i had enough time prior to maybe move in on him. Hunted til 830 at one spot, then another til noon. Saw 2 raccoons and a possum. Dad had one working at his place in 8j but mustve had hens as he went the other way still gobbling. Buddy hunted 8p this morning, heard a few on the roost and they shut down as soon as they hit the ground. Turned out to be a decent morning weatherwise. Thinking tomorow im going back to the first spot and see if that bird is still there!
  6. Fell asleep, woke up an now cant get back to bed! Like a kid on christmas eve!
  7. I dont mind a sprinkle or light rain...downpour ill go have coffee until it lightens up haha!
  8. Im pumped, the weather right now is junk but it is what it is!
  9. Use both. I start with a crow call and switch to a turkey call once i get closer
  10. I may pick up an umbrella tonight when i grab a new boxcall. Mine has gone missing! Probably setup on the edge of a small watering hole where they have been known to dust, not that they will be dusting tomorow but its right next to a power line cut that they seem to use alot.
  11. What tactics are you going to use tomorow if it rains? Just looking for some new ideas!
  12. I normally sit until around 830-9 then ill start moving around. Locator calls first then ill throw yelps and what not out there. Usually ill travel 50-60 yards and stop and do two or three calling sequences. Then repeat again another 50 or so yards.
  13. Shot mine last year at 1145...was walking back to the truck and three came in gobbling like crazy
  14. I would advise to inject it if possible. Or shove a bunch butter an spices under the skin
  15. Youtube it. Basically set the bird on a stake, cover with a metal can and have charcoal around the outside bottom of can. Turns out pretty good
  16. Out of say ten turkeys ive shot, 9 have come between 930 and noon. Ill agree, cant get em from the couch!
  17. Pipeline cuts can be good too. I have a power line cut i plan to hit up if the weather stays wet
  18. H&R 12 gauge single shot mod choke, 3" longbeard xr #6's
  19. Toss up between my flextone run/gun glass, and a primos many beards mouth call. This year it seems my go to pot call is my purpleheart pot, glass over purpleheart soundboard...sounds amazing
  20. Im sure this topic comes up alot....but might as well make it fresh! Do you use decoys? Or does the situation dictate the use of decoys? I myself have had about 50/50 with or without decoys. I do agree with some that say birds like to see whats making the sounds they are hearing, but on the flipside some decoys will spook birds or cause them to hang up. On the other hand without decoys, they have to search for you and ive had birds without decoys ive shot at ten yards. What are your thoughts or strategies?
  21. Heavy rain is the worst. If it stops raining head to an open field. Ive hunted in a light rain or mist. Its not enjoyable but gotta work with what mother nature gives ya. Make sure you have some mouth calls, or glass or acrylic pot calls. Calling for possible showers here in 8f....but it keeps changing so who knows. If it starts raining when i get to my spot ill wait it out in the truck!
  22. Theres no controversy and last i knew shooting a jake or an old tom has little to zero effect on the flock health. I could be wrong but i think dec controls that with the two bird limit. I shoot jakes and have no qualms about it. If my ten year old son is with me, yeah id love for a big gobbler to come into range. But if a pack of jakes does the same thing, im taking the bird that presents me with the most ethical shot. When im by myself, my mood dictates what ill shoot. If its 1130 and i havent heard or seen any and a jake comes strolling in...bye bye birdy
